Dude...you need to step up your DIY game.

I just finished my Upper Radiator Hose replacement and bled my own cooling system.  I spent $35.00.

Get a Lexus........

Lexus >

IS300 or a Second Generation GS........

If that doesnt interest u... look into Acura TSX, TL, RSX....... if that doesnt interest u.. look into G35.... as much as i hate seeing them around, nearly everyone got them... its still better to get that than a 325i ......

But i def recommend the Lexus......

i got an 01 530i as my first car back in 09 for 10gs 80k miles on it. i love the car to death but the amount i've spent for maintenance is ridiculous. BMW's are CRACK but do yourself a favor and cop something else as your first whip

That list is crazy but a lot of DIY could have been done. My E46 has 160K
Things that left in my garage/shop for a while

Subframe ~ $3900 (covered by BMW NA)

Driveshaft axle ~ $80

Rear driver/passenger wheel bearings - $100

Shocks blew (Upgraded to coils) ~ $650

Radiator fan - $130

Preventative maintenance

Valve Gasket - $40

VANOS seals - $60

Cooling system ~ $230

Besides the subframe and driveshaft everything was expected. I got lucky, I purchased it from an enthusiast not from some pretentious fool who doesn't perform a lick of maintenance.

Since BMW sells ~100000 3-Series a year the chances of you purchasing a vehicle from one of those pretentious fools is pretty high or one with multiple owners.

I would get a 02-03 TL-S for around 10k but even then there's the transmission issue. Get a Corolla?

thanks for the help NT I didnt pull the trigger on it... he says the car is clean inside and out and never been in a accident but i wanted to run a VIN check and he gave me the VIN number will be posting it later for GSDOUBLEU... the only thing i cant make out on the pictures is the front bumber seems to not be the orginal..... but the pics are below

also ima either going to go with the lexus IS or the TSX..... might just go ahead and buy a new one and use my current 10 stacks on a down payment i guess...

also that repair list is crazy seems like to me you might of bought a lemon!!

pics don't matter. but it looks like you've already made your decision. what was the point of making this thread if you're not gonna listen to anyone's advice
laugh.gif

The e46 looks clean. Has the sports seats and steering wheel. I say have someone check it out and if it's clear, COP IT.

i did listen to the people's advice i was going to cop it but after everyone bashing it about it being a 10 year old car and having rediculous repair prices i decided to let the guy know ima pass on it....

when people say theyre expensive to maintain...

theyre more expensive than you assume.

basically, imma break it down real easy for you.

you can buy the normal run of the mill toy car, which you have to fix with generic parts and buy oil and buy batteries for.....its about 100 a month to maintain.

OR

you can buy the fancy jawn, which is nice and fun, but is way more fragile than the run of the mill, takes specific, specialized parts, the oil and gas is twice as expensive...its about 300 a month to maintain

BMWs are more expensive to own. period. from gas, to oil to random things that go wrong with the car regularly....

as far as advice on the car youre purchasing....

ask for all service records. around 80k they get major service to the cooling system and suspension, among other things...

take it to an OLD, ESTABLISHED BMW-centered mechanic for a prepurchase inspection...

when i tell you BMWs are a headache (when theyre working theyre the best car ever tho lmao)

theyre a headache.

how about my lock tumbler went bad, which takes 2 weeks to order in from germany, its like 300 bucks, and you have to get new keys coded and cut for it....installed by somewhere who knows BMWs....

and now the trunk lock broke and the key isnt keyed for the trunk lock, just the tumbler....(my model doesnt have a manual trunk release anywhere)

ETC and so on and so forth

just know, youll have a dope ride thats madd fun to drive

but youll be spending 3 to 4 times as much on the car, regularly...

oil, for example, BMWs take highly specific oil......which is 2 to 3 times as much as normal oil...so oil changes are more expensive.

gas. You have to buy premium gas (i mean unless you buy the car brand new and use nothing but normal, i GUESS) thats 50% more expensive...

when something goes wrong, youll see generic parts or parts for other cars and itll be like 28 bucks...for your BMW? well, its 4 hoses connected together, so its 280.....dead ++$...and thats for the generic part...

so, to be honest, while it seems like a deal and a dope whip, just know that whatever you think its gonna cost to maintain and keep up a car in general, add about 60 percent more to it for a BMW....

theyre dope cars tho....really really dope.

take it to a pre purchase inspection and find out everything you can about the car...

if its in excellent shape, itll last you that 9k and then some (with proper upkeep)

Some good advice in this thread.
Getting a cheap high mileage luxury car is the definition of false economy.
