Warriors Offer Turiaf Four-Year, $17M Deal

Lakers forward Ronny Turiaf has agreed to a four-year, $17 million offer from the Warriors, according to The Press-Enterprise.

Turiaf is a restricted free agent, which means that the Lakers will have seven days to match the offer.

Agent Mark Bartelstein wouldn't confirm or deny the rumors.

"We've talked to a bunch of teams," Bartelstein said in a phone interview. "There are a lot of teams that are interested in Ronny. We'll just wait to see what happens."

Elton Brand (damn dukie)has reached a verbal agreement to sign a multiyear contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to an NBA source who requested anonymity because he is not authorized to speak on player movements. The deal is believed to be in the $80-million range and expected to span five years. LA Times

The 76ers cleared salary cap space Tuesday when they traded forwards Rodney Carney and Calvin Booth and a future No. 1 pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a deal that has yet to be officially announced but was first reported by Yahoo.com. Brand has not been reached for comment since he opted out of the final season of his Clippers contract last week. He flew to Washington, D.C., to meet with Falk last week and had a medical checkup with Dr. Craig Morgan in Wilmington, Del., the sources said. LA Times

The Clippers' verbal contract agreement with free-agent point guard Baron Davis is not expected to be altered by Brand's decision, according to the sources. LA Times

However, in clearing salary cap space for Davis, the Clippers had to renounce their rights to Brand, thus nullifying their opportunity to retain his Bird rights. Because of that, the Clippers only could offer Brand a maximum of five years, instead of a six-year deal. The Clippers' first offer was for five years and approximately $70 million but with some roster manuvering, they were able to increase the monetary amount to upwards of $80 million. That decision ultimately allowed the Warriors, who reportedly offered Brand a five-year, $90 million deal to engage the Clippers in a bidding war. Philadelphia joined the fray late but apparently won out in the end. Orange County Register

When Brand initially opted out of his contract on June 30, he and his agent, David Falk, said that it was with the intention of clearing cap space for the Clippers to land a premium free agent and build the club into a contender(Yeah that was BS). Brand's intention, he said, was to return to Los Angeles. But those plans have unraveled in the last week. The Clippers offered Brand a five-year contract worth approximately $70 million, while Golden State - now with a lot of cap space after Davis' surprise defection - offered five years and $90 million. LA Daily News

Technically, Brand took a bigger offer from the 76ers, $82 million to the Clippers' $75 million. However, with Sterling giving his basketball people a blank check, the Clippers were going to dump enough players to get to $81 million. That offer was never relayed to Brand. The Clippers say at the end, agent David Falk stopped returning their calls. Whether the imperious Falk, who once represented Michael Jordan, did this for revenge or just because it felt good is a mystery. He did once vow to get the Clippers for not taking his client, Mike Bibby, with the No. 1 pick in the 1998 draft. LA Times

The Clippers had a bigger problem than Brand's agent. It was Brand. Once he opted out of his Clippers contract, everything changed. Whether that was Falk's influence or that Brand was impressed by the 76ers, he now seemed to be looking for a way to leave rather than a way to stay. Brand was slow in returning calls to Clippers officials. Whenever they made an offer, Falk would take it back to the 76ers. For those who know Brand, questioning his sincerity is like refusing to stand for "The Star-Spangled Banner." LA Times

The 76ers wanted to clear additional salary-cap space so they can sign unrestricted free-agent forward Elton Brand to a reported five-year, $82 million contract. To do so, Philadelphia will trade young forward/guard Rodney Carney, veteran center Calvin Booth and a conditional future first-round pick from Utah to the Wolves for a salary-cap trade exemption obtained when the team traded center Mark Blount to Miami last season, and possibly a second-round pick. With Brand out of the picture, the Clippers are suddenly in the market for a power forward to replace him. Josh Smith is currently in Los Angeles on "business," according to his agent, Brian ****, who is with him. **** declined to comment on the specifics of their business and also declined to comment on Smith's immediate plans now that the Sixers appear to have moved on. In another deal today, former Clipper Corey Maggette reached agreement to join the Golden State Warriors in a five-year deal worth about $50 million, according to NBA sources who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak about player movements. Don Nelson has promised to give more playing time to his young players in the upcoming season, even at the expense of a few victories. Still, with Maggette's arrival, the Warriors will have three veterans who each averaged 20 points per game last season. AP/Boston Globe

With Maggette, the combined salary of the current Warriors roster is about $50 million (that includes the salary cap holds for Monta Ellis, Andris Biedrins and Kelenna Azubuike, the anticipated rookie salaries of forwards Anthony Randolph and Robert Hendrix, and the buyout amount for center Adonal Foyle). The Warriors are still in the market for a big man and a point guard. Even with Maggette, the still don't have the inside presence they need or a player who can consistently create for others as did point guard Baron Davis during his three-plus years in Oakland. According to sources inside the NBA circle, the Warriors have offered the Los Angeles Lakers' restricted free agent forward Ronny Turiaf a contract (believed to be paying about $4 million a year) and have shown interest in free-agent combo guard Keyon Dooling. The Orlando Magic will have a new starting shooting guard next season and might be parting with J.J. Redick or Keith Bogans to acquire a point guard. The Magic expect to sign free agent Mickael Pietrus to a four-year contract worth about $25 million, the Sentinel has learned. Magic General Manager Otis Smith said on Tuesday that the signing of Pietrus will exhaust most of the team's midlevel exception. The exception can pay a player an average of about $6 million per season. Orlando Sentinel

Pietrus will replace Maurice Evans, who started 47 games for the Magic since arriving in a November trade from the Los Angeles Lakers. The Miami Heat has reached an agreement on a potential five-year deal with free agent swingman James Jones, two league sources confirmed late Tuesday night. Jones is expected to earn a starting salary of $4 million a season, as part of the Heat's midlevel exception. Daequan Cook, a 2007 first-round pick the Heat acquired on draft day, has been slow to develop. The Celts would still like to retain James Posey, and while a league source said yesterday the club was ready to give him a fourth year at the mid-level exception, Ainge gave no such indication. Other sources say the C's aren't skimping on the money, but they do not want to take the 31-year-old reserve too far down the time line. Ainge wouldn't get into specifics, but did say, "We place value on players. We try to maximize a player's talent and their value as we manage our business. So we have a number of what we think are good deals for the Celtics out there, and that's what we're trying to do. Boston Herald

James Posey: The Cavaliers are interested and Posey's agent, Mark Bartelstein, acknowledged talks with General Manager Danny Ferry and assistant general manager Chris Grant. Posey waited until late August to sign with the Celtics last summer, but most don't expect him to wait that long this time around. "I know he wants to make a decision quicker," Bartelstein said Tuesday night. "Right now it's a matter of getting everything to come together properly." On the eve of Wednesday's first day for signing free agents, Najera said there's "no doubt" his preference is to re-sign. But he said New Orleans has jumped into the picture and the former Seattle team has gained momentum following its move to Oklahoma City, the area where Najera lives and played in college. Chris Duhon can officially sign his free agent contract with the Knicks Wednesday, a move that is expected to signal the beginning of the end to Stephon Marbury's career with the club. However, Knicks president Donnie Walsh said Tuesday that it is premature to speculate on the future of Marbury or any other current Knicks, for that matter. "Whatever we do in free agency has no bearing on the rest of our roster," Walsh said. "We're still in the process of evaluating the entire team." NY Daily News

NBA rules prohibit Walsh from talking about Duhon until the former Bulls point guard signs the contract that will pay him $12 million over two seasons. Marbury is owed $21 million on the final year of his contract, and assuming the Knicks cannot make a trade, the club is expected to release him. The gates to sign NBA free agents opened today, but the Suns' payroll predicament does not bode well for an early signing unless point guard Tyronn Lue picks them this week. To bolster the rotation, the Suns might only need to look to the untapped returnees who frequent their practice court. The Suns impacted Alando Tucker's and D.J. Strawberry's lives last year by drafting them. It is now their turn to impact the Suns.
