It depends on your needs, ie trying to gain mass because you're lanky as hell or you're trying to stay at around same weight (roughly) andgain lean muscle.

Don't forget lunges and turtle crawling. If done right, these two exercises will have the abs burning.

Deadlifts aren't knee-dominant. Why would any exercise be joint-dominant? That's like saying bicep curls are elbow dominant. Majority of power (as has already been mentioned) is generated in the posterior chain (lower back, glutes, hams).
Every exercise that involves movement is going to occur at a joint. Bicep curls are elbow-dominant because the elbow is the only place wheremovement occurs. Youre right, its not elbow dominant but it is an elbow flexion exercise.

It can be confuse I guess, if you don't understand the dynamics, because it is really the only joing being moved. But that being said, tells me right off the bat it can't be knee dominant because without any momentum really and just by raising your legs your moving a big time amount of weight meaning so many stabilizers come into play.

DL's are great.

Huh?

no

lifting raises resting heart rate for like 24+ hrs afterwards

nothing wrong with cardio but no matter your goals you should lift.

losing fat = changing your diet

lots of cardio makes you lose fat, how can't you build muscle as well if youre in the gym lifting???? you are getting rid of the bad and keeping thegood....no???

This is about as correct as saying bicep curls are a tricep exercise.

I'm actually shocked to see so many people who say they're doing it in the gym think that deadlifting is a back exercise.

The only reason you guys are feeling it in your back is because a) your form sucks, and b) you're trying to lift too much weight.

http://www.youtube.com/v/cZ0KhDtfN1o&hl=en&fs=1&
do you still believe this or do we need to discuss how your wrong?
the above video Its GettinHot posted is a great vid (there is a longer version)...and if thats not good enough look at this thread
http://www.wannabebig.com...=deadlift+primary+muscle

I can provide more links if you like.

Just curious...if D/L arent for your back then what day do you do them on?

Please, let's discuss how I'm wrong. Considering that I'm 100% right, this should make for an interesting discussion.

Building muscle stokes the fat burning process. It's essential to build lean muscle along with cardio to attack fat most effectively and efficiently. Addin proper eating and you're good.

i dont do lots of cardio

its all about the diet, like my man joe cam said.

HIIT

also this was in my sig on my old s/n

TABATA

this thread is getting boring lets post some youtube vids for inspiration, brb.

Who ever said they DON'T work your back? I simply said it's not a back exercise. It's almost like saying that squats are a core exercise... sure itworks the core, but to say its solely a core exercise is wrong, just like you are with almost everything you've said thus far. It's not my fault youhave the reading comprehension of a 1st grader.

fam you said "saying deadlifts are a back exercise is like saying curls are for your triceps".
Why do you think in my original post I said that Squats, DLs, and Bench are the foundation of a good lifting routine? because they are compound lifts!!!! ofcourse there are other muscles involved....but the back is a VERY LARGE part in the DL
Now do you have a problem w/ that?

and you didnt respond to the getting big while losing weight...please explain that to me

and again...im a grown man...you can keep internet insults to yourself...its type lame

The Deadlift is a powerful but rarely utilized exercise that should be a part of every serious trainers routine. It uses more active muscle mass than any other exercise, including squats. The focus of the Deadlift is usually considered the lower back, however it does work most of the major (and many of the minor) muscles in the body.

I'd kill to have quads like this.

And deadlifts are a back exercise if you're doing the standard russian deadlift, where you actually squat down and bring your butt down towards the groundand keep your chest and shoulders arched up a little. You're trying to keep your back tight and flat and the act of stretching your arms out by bringingyour hips away from them is stretching your back. You then have to activate most of the muscle fibers throughout your back to pull the weight up off thefloor. Your legs are helping you stand, but your back is working more during the lift.

During a Romanian deadlift, you angle your chest down, so you're keeping the weight a little more centered and you're stretching your hamstrings andglutes by keeping your butt up high in the air and pushing your hips back, then squeezing your hamstrings to pull your hips forward, which brings your upperbody back to its upright position. There's alot of different ways to deadlift, just depends on what you want to work and how you're built.

Damn this thread got me dedicated to waking up in the AM and doing some excercise for an hour of my day...I dont wanna be a bob anymore
