"The Boondocks," the edgy animated series based on Aaron McGruder's comic strip about 10-year-old black militant Huey Freeman and his gangsta-wanna-be younger brother Riley living in the suburbs with their grandfather, is returning April 21 for a fourth and final season on Adult Swim.

However, there's a catch. McGruder, who created the series and was its key creative force, is not along for the ride.

A press release from Sony  Pictures Television, which produces the series, noted that the new season "was produced without the involvement of Aaron McGruder, when a mutually agreeable production schedule could not be determined."

Representatives for McGruder could not be reached for comment.

The announcement comes as a surprise: Since launching the strip in 1999, McGruder, who is developing a live-action comedy "Black Jesus" for Adult Swim, has been extremely protective of the property and the Boondocks characters.

The Peabody Award-winning series has been a hot button for Adult Swim since its premiere. The Rev. Al Sharpton and others lashed out at the relentless use of the "N-word" in episodes.

McGruder has taken on several iconic African American figures in the show and angered Tyler Perry  when he made fun of the filmmaker in an episode that portrayed a Perry-like figure as a closeted cross-dresser who used religion to hide his lifestyle.

The series last aired in 2010.

Returning to the new season as the voices of Huey and Riley is Regina King, and John Witherspoon  is  returning as the voice of Robert "Granddad" Freeman.

I'm sure he wasn't the only person writing for the series. There are several activist he works with that share the same beliefs. I'll judge from what I see.

Read a blog post brought up the season of The Chappelle Show...without Wave Chappelle. It was trash.

I'll still watch, not sure how it's gonna be without McGruder. He really was the driving force behind a lot of the satire. It's been on point from the beginning. I'll see where it goes. I really wish Ceaser was introduced by now.

The Boondocks formula is already laid out.

Show doesn't need McGruder at this point. They have 4 years worth of events to make season. I'm still hyped.

Don't make it seem so cookie cutter man. His imprint made it what it was.

Be honest man. Boondocks is popular because the show is raw.

If they toned the show down then yes it will suck. If not it will be pure flames.

I agree, but the driving force behind it's raw attitude is McGruder. I've been following this comic since the beginning. His insight and feel for racial satire, particularly from the Black experience has been on point. It's lost some of it's edge in some areas when it made it to a cartoon, while it got better in other areas, I can live with that because you have to change it with the switch in medium for it to come across more. That was even with his involvement. The thing that makes me nervous is how other people who are now taking over and look at what he did and try to duplicate it exactly, which I think would be a big mistake. Similar to how Chappelle's show finished out without Dave. It just wasn't the same. But I'm not going to be so quick to bury season 4 without watching it so we'll see.

It's possible they might throw him this season since they already introduced Cindy from the comic; he's the only one in the entire cast from the strip who hasn't made an appearance yet.

I forgot to mention that the rumor about the reason for Aaron not being involved is the Tyler Perry episode got him in deep ****. TBS owns cartoon network and adult swim. So he was basically told he no longer had creative control over his show. Tyler Perry shows are a huge percentage of TBS ratings and makes them tons of money.

I don't think Tyler Perry is on TBS anymore he's with the OWN network now. But when that episode aired that year I was  he had like 3 shows on TBS.

I often thought that... and thought that is why they were going in being a little less controversial... I mean he did get slack...well a little for bet.. But anytime you mess with oprah/cosby/and now tyler fairy.... there will be repercussions'
