The Combat Jack Show Thread

TDE basically is dead.

They had their run and didn’t really prepare for life without Kendrick.

SZA is all that’s left?

J Rock, School Boy and Ab are all getting older.

I f*** with Jay and Schoolboy. Not an Ab fan but TDE is not the same
This is why it's dumb of them to **** on Reason.

Dude is actually talented and his style isn't so West coast that he gets limited in the ways that Jay Rock, School Boy and Soul have been throughout their career.

Dude should definitely leave TDE.

The label’s well past their Black Hippie prime. Sza, who’s arguably the biggest artist on the current roster, has issues with getting her music released (so what does that say about how they’ll view the other artists’ projects). And one of the heads of the label is publicly ****ting on one of the acts.

I don’t see how the label have any appeal at this point. What’s their saving grace in 2023? That Kendrick was signed up until last year? :lol

TDE seems like they're mismanaging gold. I was thinking how fire the last Jay Rock album was only to realize that was 2018, crazy. I forgot who Ab-soul was on his last album run. Kendrick, SZA, Q, they have too much fire and don't know how to handle it, killing their own artists momentum.

Basically. They're limiting their artist potential. It's funny cause they think applying the Kendrick formula on every artist will work. They need to get their artist to keep putting out music to get the fans hooked, then hit em with the "limited supply" move.

how major is TDE as a label tho? can they really afford for their artists to constantly be putting out music? and actually work those records properly/in a way that the artists would want/would be worth the effort?they might have fumbled a bit but it’s not like any similarly sized & constructed label is doing it much better…

TDE definitely dropped the ball with Soul's album last year. Reason can rap but he hasn't released anything worth much since TYHI and that's a project he had before TDE that they re-released after he signed.

I just watched the interview Moose called in on. That has to be a publicity stunt. If not, Moose is weak for that. Reason also has to understand that he's not connecting and no feature is gonna help that.

He need to play the under ground/backpack lane. The dirty vans/chuck wearers would support. Link up with some of the rappers and producers in that lane.

It’s soooooo many west coast artist that bubbled or were bubbling within the past few years.

No way TDE should’ve been dragging their feet like that. Their roster has been the same for 7-10 years.

That’s gross negligence.

They used that old formula of making their artist drop every few years, album roll outs, etc. outdated.

Schoolboy Q is basically a family man. My dawg would rather golf at this point.

Isiah Rashad, Jay Rock both are dope artists too. The label is just stuck in 2011 at this point.

It’s like TDE doesn’t realize that most music is microwaveable nowadays and are stuck trying to deviate from it. That’s the record industry at this point. They never evolved. Top Dawg and Co. might be content with the money they make of SZA and Ken

Great interview. Glad he touched on the college influence. Identifying the white space. Creating opportunity. Ali seem way more level headed in this one, and not out of anger like the previous one.

Part of what made TDE was quality though. Those albums had a lot of time and we all wanted more.

That last Jay Rock album so damn hard, smh

Schoolboy’s Crash Talk is good, not as bad as people say once you skip 3-4 songs. He got a lot of good **** on that album.

Looking forward to this, waiting for the whole interview to drop before I watch. I liked the Murphy Lee one from a few months ago.

So Moosa is Top Dawg son.

Specializing in hip hop and R&B artists, TDE is based in Carson, California. The label was founded in 2004 by record producer Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith, who also serves as the chief executive officer. His son, Anthony "Moosa" Tiffith Jr., and Terrence "Punch" Henderson are the presidents of the label.

Somewhere after 2016 **** changed at TDE. Maybe that's why Dot and Dave Free left.

To make matters worse, publicly defecating on one of the artists on YOUR label is a terrible thing to do.

Any potential signees who get wind of that clip from the podcast would definitely look at you crazy. Just terrible optics altogether

I'm wondering how many albums does SZA have left

These people don't care. They're just happy to get a deal.

It's like these basketball players leaving for the NBA, they never think they're not getting drafted. It's not going to be them.

Look how people were still signing to Puff and Baby.

It’s gon take another 4 years for Sza to drop.

as hot as she is, they need to put her out next year. She needs to use this year to tour and then start working on the new project.

I assume she's similar to Kendrick and might owe them two more albums.

He's talented, but he doesn't stand out.

That's why he needs to put out more product to develop a fanbase.

this is easier said than done especially in the current fickle musical landscape…some artists are prolific and less precious about their art others may be more deliberate & thoughtful about it, sometimes this exist in the same persons or an artist may be on either end of the spectrum at some point during their run.

also i think it is easier to be more generative/productive for artists that are more on the ‘vibes’ than those that are trying to convey something more and thus need more time to incubate/cook ideas be it through actually living life or just exploring which obviously can be at odds with the timeline of the those with capital

These fans don’t want introspective or conscious rap nowadays. They want easily digestible stuff.

This. I keep saying it unless you Kendrick or Cole it's gonna be a uphill battle. Those are the only 2 that just wanna rap, not following trends, not living their life on social media to break through mainstream. It's been a unbalance in hip hop for like a decade now.

it’s definitely an uphill struggle both with the economics & the culture of streaming music where almost quite literally all of recorded music is available essentially for the free99/cost of the person’s time listening so it’s hard to even consume & appreciate new music for its content…as there is the ocean of pre-existing music & the new music being produced w/the low barrier of entry

also the way artists exist in relation to the audience is so different…i don’t think it’s a matter of not wanting more substantive music, popular music almost by definition of being appealing to the masses is the most digestible, i don’t really put the blame on audience or artists because each has their part to play

A large majority of rap fans are listening to one lane of rap but they're not buying it or going to their shows. That's why these lables losing money. The fans know the music they listening to is BS by now. It's like fast food. We know it's garbage but we been listening to it for so long, my friends bumping it, it's all over social media. Records 2 mins long, it serves it's short term purpose. A lot of dudes allowing females to dictate what they listening to.
