both are making low quality arguments…and worse neither was listening; each is trying to minimize the other’s experience instead highlighting what that experience meant or even put things into an understandable perspective. they just were talking past one another, not sure what being ‘born into hip-hop’ means or how it necessarily would be relevant nor is it apparent being a fan that got involved @ 32 (even if that were literally true) necessarily invalidates having an opinion that might supersede/be just as valid; especially as hip-hop has become so ubiquitously consumed beyond those that actually produce it

being of the culture definitely can come with a more nuanced understanding that someone who is coming from a place of affinity/appreciation might not deep, whether that nuanced understanding is always relevant is circumstantial…and vice versa

to say adam doesn’t know what he is talking about and/or his opinion doesn’t matter is disingenuous, folk may not agree w/his opinion/perspective but you wouldn’t even be making the point of needing to call it out were that really the case…

this idea that these guys like akademiks, adam, vlad, etc. don’t have some idea of what they are talking about at this point is nonsense, which isn’t saying they aren’t ever wrong, have wild hot takes, or don’t each have their own biases/blindspots

You think Harvard or an Ivy League school is gone let a black person walk into their University, and speak on the inner workings of it and the history?

Those guys absolutely don’t know what they’re talking about. Again, imagine a person going to North Korea, Russia or going to Italy and trying to speak on the fashion industry and history with absolutely no knowledge of anything. It’s the same.

He was pushing that Cole is more successful. Kendrick has sold more, more accomplished and has more critically acclaimed albums than Cole, more successful tours. He thought "Big 3" meant who's more famous. Vlad and Ak have both been exposed over and over for their lack of knowledge and just being outta touch. That's just a fact.

How can somebody that don't relate to something, don't understand certain things, a outsider thats proven they don't know what they're talking about. How can they have a valid opinion?
