The Combat Jack Show Thread

I wasn't necessarily dude is a plant but when you get Billy Ray out the blue on a song, on the cover of Time magazine off of one silly kid song yeah it looks like something extra is going on.

I don't know maybe I'm not in tune enough with Lil Nas killing the streets or something.

Had Billboard never taken his song off the country charts he wouldn't have blown up like he did
I remember when the song was brought up in here whether or not it was a country song and at that point I had NEVER heard of the song or the kid. Soon as they pulled his song off the charts it was the topic of webs.
Even to the point at some country awards show they were asking the country artists whether or not it was country "enough". Billy Ray hopped on after the controversy and the build up.

And of course you can't overlook the impact of black folks stepping up to make sure LNX song got as many listens and streams as possible. We got out there and helped push that song to it's heights

Yall _’s do not know what’s popping w the kids bruh stop it  Especially when y’all proudly hate new music anyway, these convos be pointless

Unless you work in the industry or hang around a bunch of young ppl I personally wouldn’t expect you to be up on all the latest social media trends etc. **** that’s not even remotely aimed at you

I just don’t understand where these takes be coming from.

_’s be 32+ on here talking bout “Idk nobody listening to xyz popping artist” like that’s supposed to mean something  :smh:

It's just that transition from young to "old" is so fluid you don't realize how washed you are until you start hearing new names and realize you have no idea who people are. Most guys in here take not knowing who an artist is meaning that person is so new they haven't made any waves. But the rap pool has grown exponentially over the years and so have the ways to consume music.
You go to sleep one day knowing all the new artists and knowing what's poppin' then all of sudden you wake up a realize all your fav artists are closer to 40 and they not the hot and new anymore

I don't care to know what's popping with kids though.

I don't act like a expert and industry insider like a couple of ya'll that's so "in tune" with what's "what's next". But I do know a lil bit bout a lil bit. I can get a feel for whats going on based on my circle and when something don't smell right Ima say it. Don't know why you getting a lil aggy cuz I said Lizzo and Lil Nas are getting forced. It's obvious. That ain't know hot take. :lol

Come on b, you don't need to be in the streets to know Lil Nas X was popping in the suburbs and not the hood. The hood isn't going to have you number one for 85 weeks.

I don't think he's saying y'all don't know what's poppin' at all or that those two folks are 100% organic, just that we all gettin' older and at a certain point our thirst for music stops wanting new artists and settles for what's familiar and we fall out of that "Hot and New" view on music. Unless your circle also includes people who keep up with what 13 year olds are listening to you are likely a bit out of date.

I can get along fine without knowing what's poppin' for teenagers nowadays, luckily for me my son likes talkin' music as much as I do, so he'll put me on to some of the younger folks. YBN Cordae is one of em.

I guess someone has to love the biggums
Hey any proud black woman being successful is beautiful.

So you admittedly don’t care about what’s popping w the young crowd

But on here debating the validity of artists who got popping off social media/the young crowd

Edit: you telling me your limited anecdotal social circle is the barometer for what is and isn’t buzzing in the music industry, aight bro  :smh:

Literally all I’m saying

Theres a lot of **** bubbling up right now, that none us have heard before, that could explode on the scene tomorrow

If this forum was comprised of a bunch of 14-18 yr olds the takes would be a lil more understandable, being that’s who a lot of the new music is targeted at/filtering through these days

Never got a fake vibe from her, here's an interview with her from over 2 years ago. Not sure what this beautiful young black woman has done for all these shots all over place, especially from other black women aside from finally being successful after grinding. Actually NVM, answered myself.

a lot of black women feel like Lizzo is for white women. I don’t disagree but I still like her. When we got Meg’s & Cardi’s Most black women aren’t checking for Lizzo. I went to a barre class and it was mostly white except me and my homegirl. The instructor had just broken up with her bf and she played mad Lizzo to help her get over it. Also a lot of black people feel a way about white women rallying behind a fat black woman. It’s comes off mammy-ish to them. I disagree but I see how they could see it like that. I remember seeing her a few years ago with D&M behind the scenes at some festival and Pio was there too.

That why Safaree rocking the Capt America helmet? And what kinda baby shower is this?
It was a Met Gala themed shower :rolleyes

Also I played Old Town Road a few times after they took it off the charts to see what it was about and I saw people on twitter say they would put it on repeat just cuz. My friend djs and he did a elementary school function and those kids went CRAZY for it :rollin

I also saw LNX perform twice this summer and didn’t want to AT ALL

Went through a quick glance of her stuff, I don't see anything really themed for white women or anything black women wouldn't like, it's in the Beyonce vein. Weird that they've taken to it, but she can't be blamed for that.

I’m not sure if I’m with the mammie comments about her no matter how much of a ficus she is. I will say that she could maybe have a big white female fanbase because she’s safe.

But again, idk if I can agree that people love her and are championing her because she’s fat and are essentially laughing at her. I think that’s just people projecting.

It's weird all these theories are held as gospel over whether or not people just like her music
It's gotta be she's being made a joke of by white people or she makes white friendly music

I understand that there's always a plot or ploy behind why artists are being pushed or supported but man kinda sucks that she just can't be talented and make music that folks enjoy.
I know none of you have said that she isn't talented or have said anything downplaying her level of talent but the undertones of what y'all are saying is a bit disappointing.

Nah self deprecation in regards to being fat is actually a big part of her character. She very much wants to confront ppl w her comfortability in being overweight, in a way. Her IG name is Lizzo be eating:lol:

This obviously isn’t an uncommon thing for overweight people, a lot of comedians do the same thing.

But it’s a contextual thing. All depending on how you wanna look at it I.e. overweight black girl making stereotypical jokes about eating chicken for white america.

Like with this post

This is all traditional Juneteenth food nothing wrong w it on that front.

But the fact that her following is largely white can put **** in a different context, again, depending on how you look at it. A lot of black twitter wasn’t feeling it

All in all, a lot of this has to do with deeper black psychology. I think convos like this will always exist because we aren’t a monolith. Being black and how you should be as a black person means something different for a lot of different ppl

I don't think anyone is doubting she worked hard to get put on.

but once it was on, it was on.

People doubt in 2019 the power of labels and what they can do for an artist, why artist sign with a major. Why artist don't stay indie. Lizzo is the perfect example. And a 360 is still better than what she was before.
