I'm excited for when they get all three of them, then enter the Peavy sweepstakes. Can't wait.

Pettit will come back, Mussina, Pavano maybe, Jaba, they'll just have a 14 man rotation and still have arm injuries in June.

Yankees have already had many descussions with the Padres about Peavy.
Towers & Cashman were apparebtly discussing at the GM meetings

Now all we need is for the NL teams (Cubs/Braves) to mess it up and not get a deal done.

Well the Braves have ended talks with the Padres for Peavy. Not mad but the Braves can't compete with the Yankees offers to AJ Burnett and Derek Lowe this is the first year the Braves actually have money to spend and they will be outbid by the big market teams.
Olney On Braves, Peavy, Burnett
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [November 15 at 1:13pm CST]

Buster Olney writes that the Braves are stillthe best fit for Jake Peavy, even if they are apparently moving on forthe time being. Olney argues that "both sides need this trade."

The Braves will not bid on C.C. Sabathia, and Olney thinks they'll have a tough time signing A.J.Burnett.

If the Braves can't sign Burnett, Olney suggests Jon Garland, Oliver Perez and RyanDempster as alternatives.

The Braves have already had preliminary discussions withBurnett's agent, Darek Brauneker.
Mets expected to make contract offers to closers Brian Fuentes and Francisco Rodriguez this week
The Mets' true offseason strategy will reveal itself this week when general manager Omar Minaya finally extends offers to his top free-agent targets. A person familiar with the situation did not specify which day Minaya will deliver the numbers to Francisco Rodriguez or Brian Fuentes. He also could make an offer to starting pitchers such as Derek Lowe. That represents a significant step, considering that the Mets have talked about a number of different options - including a trade for the White Sox's Bobby Jenks - in order to fill their vacant closer slot. But now that Minaya is ready to talk years and dollars, it appears that his preference is to see where the free-agent market goes first. -- Newsday
A good sign if Red Sox want Mark Teixeira
Removing the Yankees from the equation is sure to keep Mark Teixeira's asking price from rising beyond the Red Sox' means. Had the Yankees been determined to land the first baseman, they might have directed the bidding to a level only they can afford. Teixeira is not without other well-heeled interested suitors. The Los Angeles Angels, who acquired him in a July trade with Atlanta, are interested, and the Los Angeles Dodgers could be interested if they fail to retain left fielder Manny Ramirez. Teixeira also has drawn interest from the two franchises nearest his Maryland hometown: the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals, both of whom are rebuilding and could use Teixeira as a drawing card. It's more likely, however, that Teixeira would prefer to sign with a perennial pennant contender. -- Boston Herald
Giants ready to make offer from Rafael Furcal
The Giants' more realistic targets are a middle infielder and bullpen setup men. As of midday, they had not submitted a formal offer for Rafael Furcal, the premier shortstop on the market and one of their supposed targets. Furcal should have plenty of suitors, including Oakland, and is believed to be seeking four years at $10 million per for openers. Furcal's agent, Paul Kinzer, said Friday there is a potential match with the Giants. "I'll just say we've got serious interest in each other," Kinzer said. "He likes the Giants and they've expressed serious interest." Asked why Furcal would consider the Giants over teams closer to the postseason, Kinzer said, "Their great young pitching staff. He feels they can be competitive pretty quick." -- SF Chronicle
Astros would like to deal Carlos Lee?
Houston. All you hear about the Astros is that they're trying to "dump money." They want to move Miguel Tejada or Jose Valverde and if they could get Carlos Lee, coming back from a finger injury, to waive his no-trade clause, they'd probably move him. -- Boston Globe
Rockies eye Dodgers lefy Beimel
MLB.com has reported the Rockies are looking hard at former Dodgers lefty Joe Beimel. Beimel has served up just one home run in 154 appearances in the last two seasons. Other relievers Colorado might pursue include Trever Miller, Mike Maroth and Ron Villone. -- Denver Post
Ibanez to Mets or Cubs?
Raul Ibanez, OF/DH. He was mentioned often by our panel as a hitter who could really help several teams, notably the Mets or Cubs, who have made a lefthanded bat a top priority. Ibanez, according to one of our guys, "brings a winning attitude, even though he played in such a tough place like Seattle. He'd be a good fit in Chicago because Lou [Piniella] loves pure hitters." Ibanez, 36, knocked in 110 runs and hit .293 last season. -- Boston Globe
Abreu to Cubs, Mets, A's, Giants or Angels
Bobby Abreu, OF. He's an on-base percentage machine (.405 for his career) who still has decent speed and can hit. His defense has declined, so his days of making $16 million per year are likely over. He'd be a good fit for the Cubs, Mets, A's, Giants, Angels, Phillies, or any team looking for lefthanded pop. -- Boston Globe
Kerry Wood to Rangers?
Where does Kerry Wood go? He's close to Nolan Ryan in Texas and hails from the Dallas area. Milwaukee, St. Louis, Oakland, Atlanta, Cleveland, the Mets, and Tampa Bay could all be suitors. -- Boston Globe

Giants signed Affeldt....sorry Indians.

The angles NEED Texeria...they are NOT good enough to win a world series without him.
They overpaid for Tori Hunter, Vlad is going to hit a decline and when he does it will happen fast he is not an elite player anymore IMO and they have a bunchof mediocre hitters around him.

Are there any Reds fans that could give some insight into what kind of pitcher Affeldt is? I see the numbers, but other than that is there anything else worthmentioning? What kind of stuff does he have? What pitches does he throw?

^ The article just says he would be a good fit, not that the Giants are interested. I had the same initial reaction when I read it.

The Chicago Cubs are close to signing right-handed pitcher Ryan Dempster to a four-year contract, and an agreement could be announced as early as Tuesday afternoon, according to a baseball source.

Dempster, 31, has a 76-81 record in 11 seasons with Florida, Cincinnati and Chicago. He posted a 17-6 record with a 2.96 ERA in 33 starts for the Cubs last season.
The deal is believed to be worth $52 million. Foxsports.com first reported that the Cubs and Dempster were closing in on an agreement. Dempster is currently at his home in Colorado, according to a source familiar with the situation. Dempster's signing takes one high-profile free agent off the market. CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe and Ben Sheets are the top pitchers still on the market.
Dempster was the Cubs' closer from 2005-07, saving 87 games in 102 chances. He made a big switch this past season, returning to the starting role he once held with the Marlins and Reds from 1998-2003.
He was 14-3 at Wrigley Field during the regular season. But one of his worst performances came in the playoff opener against the Dodgers on the Cubs' home field. Dempster threw 109 pitches in just 4 2/3 innings, giving up four runs and four hits while matching a career high seven walks. He gave up a grand slam to James Loney in the Cubs' 7-2 loss. Chicago, which had the NL's best record, was swept out of the playoff in the first round for the second straight season. On the first day of spring training last February, Dempster said he thought the Cubs would win the World Series. They still haven't won one since 1908.

Bookmark that site if you haven't already... Great source of baseball info...

Looks like he's mostly fastball, curve, and change... Has a cutter he's used less and less over the last couple of years... Velocity was up a lot thisyear, so it'll be interesting to see if that sticks or if it was just an anomaly... Strong GB/FB rates, line drive rates the last couple of years have beenOK...

Good reliever, and by most indications he could have gotten more money than what the Giants gave him... Good signing, IMO...

It's seems like their have been a growing trend of "cutter ball pitchers".

Another thing I've notice is if/when they stop using the cutter all the time their velocity tend to go up quite a bit. Jesse Litch basically only threwcutters and soome 2 seamer's and topped out at 89 but he was sent down to AAA to work on some things and he came back throwing less cutters and a 94 mph 4seamer and danm near doubled his K/9

Any fantasy baseball owners Jesse is going to do big things next year.

The White Sox teaching John Danks the cutter is what took him from a 3/4 type prospect with the Rangers to the front-line guy we saw this year...I think the White Sox try and teach most of the pitchers in the system how to throw cutters...

His fastball velocity also went up 2 MPH this year, but the cutter is what really put him over the top...

i really liked Affeldt...he pitched fairly well all season long, and great the last 2 months, earning him this raise (he got $3 mil for last season.) but withhim and Weathers leaving...i'm not really sure what our bullpen plans are, esp seeing as how it was one of the best pens in the NL last season.
Sources: Yanks ready big offer for A.J. Burnett
The Yankees, according to several industry insiders, spent yesterday preparing an offer - perhaps a five-year deal worth about $80 million - for Toronto righty A.J. Burnett. This would come after they offered Milwaukee lefty CC Sabathia a six-year contract worth between $140 million and $145 million. And the word on the MLB street is the Yankees have the glue for both. Furthermore, baseball decision-makers believe the Yankees will eventually go after Dodger free-agent righty Derek Lowe. -- NY Post
Cubs are only team in running for Padres Jake Peavy
http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20081118/news_1s18padnotes.html

Padres GM Kevin Towers on the Jake Peavy trade talks: "It's really come down to one club now - the Cubs. It's going to take awhile. They have a couple of players to pick from that we are interested in but anything with them is going to potentially involve a third team or fourth team. We're focusing only on them." Towers said his conversations with the Yankees "were not substantial" and that he told Yankees GM Brian Cashman "until I get the go-ahead from Jake, I'm not going to" explore trade options with Cashman. -- San Diego Union-Tribune
Jays unlikely to deal Halladay
While chat rooms and talk shows suggest dealing Roy Halladay "for a ton of prospects" that's not wise. Halladay is a stud that an organization like the Blue Jays discovers oh so rarely. Dave Stieb, Pat Hentgen and Jimmy Key are the only homegrowns that can come close to Halladay in talent and durability. You don't trade a Halladay. -- Toronto Sun
Angels wait to make offers to Teixeira and Sabathia
The Angels have yet to make an offer to first baseman Mark Teixeira or pitcher CC Sabathia, Reagins said. Although Teixeira is their top priority, the Angels appear to be waiting for agent Scott Boras to solicit bids from other clubs before presenting their bid, in the hope Teixeira will consider their offer in line with the market. The Angels are expected to present their offer shortly and ask for an answer within a short window. -- LA Times
Tigers in mix for Padres Greene, Red Sox Lugo
Red Sox SS Julio Lugo's expensive two-year contract could be a cumbersome one for Detroit to add for a team already committing $104.4 million to nine players on its 2009 roster. Signing a free agent or trading for somebody, such as San Diego's Khalil Greene (.213, 10 homers, 35 RBIs), who is due $6.5 million in 2009, might make more sense. Greene is a free agent after next season. Free agents Craig Counsell, a left-handed hitter and long-time favorite of Tigers manager Jim Leyland, David Eckstein or Adam Everett could be had for far less. -- Ann Arbor News
Agent: Pedro Martinez wants one more turn with Mets
Pedro Martinez still has "a lot of baseball left in him" and would like to finish his sure-fire Hall of Fame career in Flushing, according to his agent. Fernando Cuza told the Daily News yesterday that Martinez would "like to stay in New York." Cuza added that while the Mets are Martinez's top choice, they are only one of many possible suitors for the 37-year-old pitcher. "He's not ready to retire. He had a tough year, first with the injury and then with the death of his dad. It took a toll. But Pedro's put all of that behind him. He's very competitive and would like to finish his career strong," Cuza said. "He feels fantastic and he's been working hard." -- NY Daily News
Giants might trade Bengie Molina?
Bengie Molina occasionally has been mentioned in trade rumors this offseason, but general manager Brian Sabean would have to receive an overwhelming offer to deal him. But if the Giants are struggling as the July 31 Trading Deadline approaches, don't be surprised if they jettison Molina, who's eligible for free agency after the season ends. If the Giants decide that Posey needs another year or two of seasoning in the Minors, they might try to re-sign Molina, who has been such a clutch hitter and clubhouse leader. -- SFGiants.com
Mariners inch closer to naming manager
Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said Monday it could be a few more days before he makes the biggest decision of his brief tenure with the club. Zduriencik said he has completed interviews for the Mariners' open manager's job and spent the day making follow-up calls, more extensive background checks and ensuring that he chooses the best of the seven candidates, none of whom has managed in the major leagues. The finalists are Boston Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills, Chicago White Sox bench coach Joey Cora, Arizona Diamondbacks third base coach Chip Hale, Boston third base coach DeMarlo Hale, St. Louis Cardinals bench coach Jose Oquendo, Triple-A Portland manager Randy Ready and Oakland Athletics bench coach Don Wakamatsu. Zduriencik said he likely will make an announcement Wednesday or Thursday as to who will lead the Mariners' rebuilding after a 61-101 season. -- Seattle P-I
Dodgers could land Manny Ramirez by default
Where Manny Ramirez ends up is anyone's guess. On the surface, there don't appear to be very many "good fits" for a player who is expecting one the game's highest salaries and a long-term deal, prefers a city with a sizeable Latino community, doesn't want suffocating attention from fans, and, despite his accessibility in LA, has never really liked inquisitive media members lingering around his locker. Of course, if you're like me, you're assuming the only "fit" that really matters to Team Manny-Scott Boras is the highest bidder. All the other quality-of-life stuff, Ramirez will simply deal with in his own quirky way, like he always has. As for the Dodgers, if they do end up with him -- and I think it's still a long shot -- it will be the same way they got him in the first place. By default. Because he had nowhere else to go. -- Riverside Press-Enterprise

http://
Red Sox could try to deal Mike Lowell?
If the Red Sox were to sign Mark Teixeira, they most likely would try to move Mike Lowell, who has two years and $24 million left on his contract. Of course, Lowell is recovering from October hip surgery, which will make it difficult to deal him until he proves he can play. That means if the Sox ink Teixeira, they would be forced to bring all three players (Lowell, Youkilis and Teixeira) to spring training. Yes, Manny the Clown will be gone at last, but a new three-ring circus will be in Fort Myers. And you know what? It's worth the chaos. Signing Teixeira is a rare opportunity for the Sox, a star player who would be a rock in the middle of their lineup for years to come. You don't pass on that because Mike Lowell is a class act. -- Boston Herald
Weathers on Giants radar?
Giants GM Brian Sabean still wants to improve the bullpen and will shift his search toward right-handers. Other free agents include David Weathers, who happens to be Affeldt's best friend, Bobby Howry, Juan Cruz and Brandon Lyon. -- SF Chronicle
Orioles make contact with free agent Mark Teixeira
The Orioles have taken the first step in their pursuit of Maryland-born first baseman Mark Teixeira. "We have had discussions with his representative," club president Andy MacPhail said yesterday. The Orioles contacted Teixeira's agent, Scott Boras, on Friday, the first day clubs were allowed to officially court free agents, MacPhail said. There were no offers; Boras indicated he would get back to the Orioles when he wanted to talk specifics. It was simply an initial conversation between two deliberate, thorough men in a process that will take weeks, maybe months before resolution. -- Baltimore Sun
Halos top prospect Brandon Wood released by Dominican winter team
Brandon Wood, the Angels' top prospect and a candidate to start in their infield next season, has been dismissed from his winter club because of poor performance. Wood hit .167 for Estrellas in the Dominican winter league, with one home run and 16 strikeouts in 48 at-bats. The club sent him home after 13 games. "You've got to perform pretty much right off the plane," Angels minor league director Abe Flores said. General Manager Tony Reagins said the dismissal would not extinguish Wood's chances of winning a roster spot in spring training. -- LA Times

Damn, getting sent home from your Winter League team? That would hurt a player's confidence...

That A.J. Burnett deal has "Carl Pavano" written all over it.

Im going to laugh when he gets injured again...I'm praying the Yanks overbid so the Jays don't sign him.

Also apparently Milton Bradley is the Blue Jays number one priority.

I still can't get over Jason Bartlett receiving an MVP vote. I'm appalled, really.

I could compile a list of at least 200 players who deserve that vote more than him. Players have been cut with better numbers than he had.

I would like to know who cast the vote. It has to be some kind of joke.
