When he took over as Blue Jays GM, Alex Anthopoulos faced a tough task: Engineer a Roy Halladay trade. Buster Olney looks at how the deal was done. Blog

TORONTO -- Former Toronto Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay has taken out a full-page newspaper advertisement thanking the city and the team's fans.

Halladay was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies on Dec. 16 after 12 seasons with Toronto. The ad in the Toronto Sun on Tuesday said that he felt "blessed" to have been part of the organization since being drafted in 1995.

Said the right-hander: "Toronto will forever have a special place in my heart. The memories will last a lifetime and so will my gratitude."

The 2003 Cy Young Award Winner was 148-76 with a 3.43 ERA for the Blue Jays. He was traded to the Phillies in a four-team blockbuster deal that included Cliff Lee.

The Mets have looked into bringing back Pedro Martinez, according to one baseball man who has spoken with them.

The club has talked with Martinez's agent, Fernando Cuza, and indications are that the Mets are continuing to kick around the idea internally. But Martinez's price tag at the moment appears to be more than they're interested in guaranteeing.

ESPN Insider has the updated buzz from the Major League Baseball rumor mill.

An official of one club that kicked the tires on Martinez this winter told ESPN.com recently that "he wants more than Brad Penny got" from the Cardinals. Penny recently signed a one year, $7.5 million, plus incentives that could hike that amount to $9 million if Penny pitches 205 innings or more.

Martinez went 5-1 in nine starts with the Phillies down the stretch, but seemingly opened the Mets' eyes by beating them twice -- including a Sept. 13 game in which he threw eight shutout innings against them, striking out seven.

However, the Mets also have been speaking to a number of free-agent starters and seem more focused on a group that includes Joel Pineiro, Doug Davis and Jon Garland. They were also interested in Jason Marquis, but Marquis is bound for Washington.

[h5]Javier Vazquez | Braves[/h5]

We told you that the Yankees have acquired Javier Vazquez and Boone Logan from the Braves for Melky Cabrera, Mike Dunn and prospect Arodys Vizcaino.

So what's a quick analysis

Well, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark is on the case. Stark emails that this move opens the door for outfield moves for both teams. The Yankees are now expected to explore both the free-agent market and trade market for a leftfielder. But they've continued to portray themselves as uninterested in anyone in the price range of Matt Holliday, Jason Bay or Johnny Damon. One name who has been on their radar screen is Mark DeRosa, whose $6-million asking price is in the dollar area they appear willing to allocate.

The Braves free up somewhere in the neighborhood of $9 million in this trade -- Vazquez's $11.5-million salary and the half-million dollars sent by the Yankees in cash, minus the $3 million or so Cabrera figures to earn via arbitration. They're expected to use that money to add an outfield bat. Among the rumored possibilities: Bay and Damon, although both have been looking for more than the Braves would prefer to spend.

The Athletics elected to non-tender Jack Cust earlier this month, but left open the chance of bringing back the outfielder at a more manageable salary.

The landscape may have changed with the A's closing in on a deal with free agent Coco Crisp. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote that the A's still have enough payroll flexibility to retain Cust, but they must act quickly since Cust is expecting some offers in the next few days.

A report on FoxSports.com says the Tigers, Royals, Giants and Rangers are among the teams who have expressed interest since the A's non-tendered Cust. Would an NL team take a chance on Cust considering his defensive shortcomings?

The Washington Nationals reportedly targeted free agent right-hander Jon Garland before turning their attention to Jason Marquis, who agreed to a two-year deal Monday to pitch in the nation's capital.

The Washington Post reports today that general manager Mike Rizzo wanted Garland, but the free agent right-hander hedged on a deal and is believed to prefer a West Coast team.

After signing starter Jason Marquis to a two-year deal, the Washington Nationals are making a big push to add reliever Matt Capps to the fold, reports ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

Agent Paul Kinzer said the Nationals weren't a factor when Capps began considering his options as a free agent. But Washington is now among the leading candidates to sign Capps because of the efforts of general manager Mike Rizzo.

"Mike Rizzo has done an unbelievable job," Kinzer said Monday. "They've really impressed Matt. The Nationals weren't even on the radar when we started, but now Matt is considering them hard."

Capps, who hit the open market when the Pirates declined to offer him a contract Dec. 12, will probably pick his new team in the next two days, Kinzer said. It's uncertain which other clubs he's still considering, but the other finalists appear to view him more as a setup man than a closer.

"If we go closer, it looks like it's going to be Washington," Kinzer said. "Matt can't go wrong with his last few choices."

It has been a busy offseason for the Boston Red Sox, who have landed John Lackey, Marco Scutaro and Mike Cameron via free agency and seemed to have a deal in place for Mike Lowell before that trade fell apart.

Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald writes today that the Red Sox may not be done dealing. While it remains unlikely, a deal for Jason Bay or Matt Holliday "could end up falling into the Red Sox' laps."

Silverman says that neither the Yankees nor the Red Sox would declare they are done dealing while Bay or Holliday remain on the market.

Major League Baseball and its umpires are nearing agreement on a new contract that could be reached as soon as today, reports the Associated Press.

The AP says management has been looking to gain more flexibility and control when it comes to postseason umpiring assignments. The umps came under fire for a series of missed calls during the 2009 playoffs. In short, the best umpires should work the biggest games, regardless of seniority.

The revamping of the Seattle Mariners apparently will continue with a trade that will send Brandon Morrow to the Toronto Blue Jays for fellow right-hander Brandon League and a prospect, reports Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

The deal is contingent upon both players passing physicals.

ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney writes in today's blog that "the trade is the latest example of how Seattle is focused on giving itself the best possible chance to contend for the 2010 title, because right now, Morrow is a project that needs time and work, and League should help the Mariners right away, benefitting from their defense."

Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times reports the unnamed prospect will not be Brett Wallace, who was acquired by Toronto from Oakland last week in the Roy Halladay megadeal.

Jason Bay has a four-year offer from the New York Mets, but his reluctance to pull the trigger on a deal indicates he wants either a fifth year from the Mets or an offer from another team.

That has led to a stagnant race for more than a week, but Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reports that talks were active Monday, which could indicate either progress with the Mets or that another club has entered the mix. Silverman also raises the possibility that the Red Sox may not be totally out of the race for Bay.

Maybe the wait is paying off for Bay. "He almost seems like he's in a holding pattern," one executive told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark Monday, "as if he thinks he could have more options in a week or 10 days or three weeks than he has now. It looks like a situation where other teams are playing a waiting game, trying to move pieces that could make him a fit."

And the most logical place that meets that description, said the same executive, is the Los Angeles Angels.

"He certainly fits there," the exec said, "if they trade Juan Rivera or dump Gary Matthews."

Melky is about average at the plate and sub-par defensively in CF... Move him to the corners and he's probably a little above average defensively andsub-par offensively... He's a 4th outfielder, not a starter...

Guess Arodys Vizcaino is the catch of this trade for the Braves...
