I'm never going to bash any fighter anymore for asking for more money, especially a guy like stipe who is a company man.. who actually puts on a show and is a champion who's defended his belt

Not bashing, but contracts are contracts and I'm guessing there is SOME increase in $$$ once you get a belt and for title fights.
Dude just won and and has one defense. The UFC can't cash out every dude that does that.
Business is a long game.
And I'm not sure how much of a draw he is either.

another reason Overeem probably gets paid that much is that he fought out his previous contract against JDS. He took a gamble on himself and won. He was able to leverage into a better deal thanks to that win.
I also remember when Pettis fought Melendez, Melendez just signed that new deal with UFC instead of Bellator. And he was paid 200K guaranteed while the champ Pettis got paid 100K to show and 100K to win.

You sign a deal. And unless you have a certain level of leverage, you might not have the clout to re-negotiate your deal before it expires.

Combat sports, especially mma, you have to strike while the iron is hot. There is little relevance to comparing fighter contracts to other major sports leagues. In sports leagues there is no wiggle room when players sign or very little
In mma we have seen fighters restructure their deals after contracts have been signed. I figured it went without mentioning but fighters aren't paid very well in comparison to how much the UFC is making. I'm pleased to see fighters getting more vocal about their pay because they're risking their lives more than any other sport and it's not really an argument. Maybe the NFL but the minimum salary trumps most mma fighters
