The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- Cannonier, Imavov, Reyes, Rosas on NOW

They need to get them out here on a US card but I'm sure they probably got a deal with the broadcasters to have certain fighters only on the EU cards.

Whatever the case is- they messed up. If they're binding themselves into restrictions that's on them

This event ideally should have been spammed in ads for months and made on free television

Imagine if this could have been on ESPN :smh:

They have two

In the event that bellator is sold to PFL, this whole season thing can’t be their main thing right? Like eventually they need to make full time champs where maybe season champs fight for belt after season?

Just don’t see how you capitalize on these stats under a repetitive season format as well as there not being enough spots for everyone.

I'd imagine they do a mega tournament initially which would actually be pretty intriguing tbh

Then after I think it'd be more ideal to just be a regular fight promotion, not tournament based

For those who missed Doumbe

You can't quite understand how lit it was in there. Pre-fight in the cage he was yelling and having the crowd chant with him. I have never seen that in MMA ever

He walked out with a whole *** mattress. Again, I have never seen that in MMA ever

This event should have went viral. You had one of the most famous athletes in the world fly in after playing in a game just to watch

It's not a difficult concept, E. Spencer

Fans want to see him fight against the best. People have no idea who he just fought, probably a lot of MMA fans had no idea. Myself included

At the same time of course it's also easy to be happy he's making money and yes it's amazing to see him shine elsewhere

Why do people do this  they gotta make it all black and white. For or against the evil UFC

I really hope his PFL contract is no longer than 5 fights/2 years. Perfect scenario would be for him to get as much MMA experience on that contract, then jump over to the deep end of the rankings.

Even if he doesn't jump, I would love for an Amasov/Doumbe fight once he's a bit more seasoned.

He was supposed to fight on the 1st UFC Paris card. Frances commision didnt clear him. All the doctors said he was good though. When they released him, PFL came to him with a 140k flat per fight (his UFC contract was on a 20/20).

Wait a min, so he wasn't sanctioned for the UFC event in Paris... but he was sanctioned for the PFL event in Paris? Wut

“A doctor made a mistake in that test and [it said that] I have blood in my brain, and I used to do it like so many times when I fought — I had one boxing for it and I used to do it — I signed the paper to the UFC,” Doumbé said. “I didn’t even check, and they [responded] to us that I can’t fight because the MRI is bad. So that’s why I didn’t fight [at] UFC Paris, that was a very big mistake.”

Additionally, according to Doumbé, there is a rule within the Paris commission that states that a pro fighter with less than 10 fights can only share the cage with a competitor with near-equal MMA experience, which also led to the bout being cancelled.

That crowd chanting was crazy.

That was in France? The crowd was lit AND they had the biggest star in foot ball in attendance?

Bellator what are you doing?

So is PFL Europe totally separate from America? And with the Saudi investment…there’s a Middle Eastern league now too?

Just seems confusing. And they’ve had Kayla sitting on time out for 13 months smh. No word on Jake Paul. Francis is boxing in Fury’s warm up for the unified HW title.

They’re saying if PFL buys Bellator….there are now two leagues? One for the stale tournament (because it’s the same guys and the weird rules). And there’s another one that like normal MMA with PPV like money fights?

PFL as an origination is confusing to me, like where is the money coming from, theyve done ONE ppv and it was a disaster how do they make money?
They had multiple investors when they first started. A good amount of them were sports (NBA,NHL,MLS,MLB) team owners. They also just sold minority stake to Saudis PIF for 100 mil.

Honestly, no major MMA promotion aside from the UFC is making profit. It does seems like they're starting to lay the foundation to be competitive in the next couple years though. Imo, abig part of their success is going to rely on how the UFC antitrust lawsuit shakes out. It would make things much easier for them to get top fighters via free agency.

Yeah…but if that turns MMA into Boxing (eg independent contractors, open market with sanctioning bodies) then how does PFL benefit?

PFL benefited from the model the UFC created. PFL just happens to be a small player because WSOF was a second tier MMA promotion competing with Bellator prior to the Viacom purchase. Things have improved for them with ESPN coverage and some buzz here or there. But maybe the first shoe dropping is buying Bellator then trying to make a run at improving their name brand and their major stars.

They resigned Clarissa Shields. They have Kayla. If they get Cyborg they can make the biggest women’s fight outside of UFC.

They need to get more exposure for Doumbe and figure out how to make more male stars.
