NBA is legit like the casino. Beating the house is possible, but you've got to be playing near flawlessly.
This is the referees system to discretely help teams:
For the team they want to win, the first method is obvious: they call touch fouls for ball handlers so they either get free throws or retain possession. The second method is to call a foul that prevents a change of possession, like after a rebound/steal, basically late whistle calls.
To keep the foul count even: when the other team has the ball, they call pointless perimeter fouls/backcourt fouls on inconsequential plays.
Don't get too invested fellas.
