The Official NBA Season Thread

You need to listen to the whole thing. Whole episode of very good storytelling.

Goes back to the point of young dudes not knowing folks even though this was a wild case of it.

But even still during the episode, Haywood was naming folks from that era and Theo Pinson had NO clue who they were and that would have only been about 10 or so years before he entered the league.

The player in question is Kwame Brown.

Whole episode.

B Wood cool as hell. Kwame 6 years older than me and ain’t know DJ? :lol

You should know a lil bit of history.

But at the same time, a 60+ year old man going around introducing himself as Dr. J is a bit goofy.

Julius Erving suffices
Well we don't know the nature of Kwame learning that he was "Doctor."

He could have introduced himself as Doc.
Someone else could have told him to go talk to Doc.

Who knows.

The "issue" here is the lack of awareness but I get it that not everyone is a student of the game. It is what it is.

But not knowing Dr. J is blasphemy.

That’s wild. There are just some players who might be good at hooping but just don’t read about basketball history. So you get stories like this. DR J was low 50s maybe when this happened. He wasn’t that old lol.

I’ve met Dr.J before and he’s a cool dude. Some of his vehicles a partner car shop maintains for him as well.

He had a cool cameo in the Reggie Jackson Amazon special.

He’s 74 now so when this happened he lightly just turned 50. He wasn’t the old and he’s pretty recognizable. I mean Dr J looks like Dr J lol. So i’m sure he usually doesn’t have to introduce himself most time.

The man is truly a legend and as nice and cool as anyone on the planet.

It’s wild to see them kids not knowing a good chunk of the players. After I’d see all the current stuff on ESPN, I’d switched to ESPNews. I remember buying this old Super Bowl DVD Collection set and watching all the old joints with my pops. I wanted to know everything and everybody. Eventually I realized my Dad wasn’t into sports as much as me and only used it to bond with me

Yea not knowing dr. J is something else

I mean I’d get if a young guy didn’t know certain guys.. if a young dude didn’t know who bonzi wells is, I wouldn’t be shocked

Or if a young guy didn’t know certain coaches were players

but dr.j was one of the instrumental pillars of growing the league and thee face of the ABA

Even though most of us on here wouldn’t have even been alive, I guarantee most of us have seen his highlights a ton of times through various league media

Other than magic and bird, you could argue dude is next up on playing a pivotal role in the growth of popularity of the league

And ain’t like he was one of those guys who didnt stick around in various ways.. dude always stuck around in an ambassador type capacity for the league

I've said this before but 2K is in a great position to be that "Basketball Almanac" that past generations got from Basketball Cards, Books, and TV Content that helped us learn about past generations. Include small bios on the players if the past so these kids can learn.

Yes, they know some of them simply because of they are IN the game but as far as knowing how they play? Well that's next to impossible with how they do things over there.

"Look at this Opal version of Shaquille O'Neal that has an 83 FT and a 74 3pt rating."

They can be doing better.

Yall surprised this country dude doesn’t know who a player is that didn’t play the same position as him?

"Miller Moments" was always one of my favorite moments during the NBC broadcasts and hopefully they bring them back to create a thirst for knowledge of the past.
