The Official Photography Thread - Vol. 3

Need some help here. I want to take pictures with this vertical layout without actually having to crop it. Look at image 1 and then 2. What do I have to do with my DSLR to automatically take pictures like image 2 without having to take them like image 1 and then cropping it. Hope that makes sense. Thanks!

If you mean you just wanna shoot pictures in portrait instead of landscape then there should just be a mode for that in your camera or you can just turn your camera sideways

I picked up the A7R III earlier this year and it's pissing me off lol. Anyone else experience these issues?:

Turning on the camera can be super delayed - a few seconds for it to completely come on, or the screen comes up followed by the sensor finally opening up maybe 4-5 secs later. This is my first mirrorless camera so is that normal? Earlier today it wouldn't come on at all in the middle of using it until I took the battery out and put back in.

The screen and viewfinder are complete dust magnets. When by my side on my strap, I pull it up to use and I always have to blow off lint. I've never had that issues with my DSLRs in the past.

I love the camera for the size convenience and the fact its output is amazing, but now I'm considering going back to Nikon with the D850.

when you say “the sensor finally opening up maybe 4-5 secs later,“ what do you mean? on a mirrorless camera the sensor is always exposed, but i have experienced with my 1st gen a7r, after a drop, the shutter would sometimes get ‘sticky’ and take longer to operate, sometimes requiring turning off and on to ‘unstick’ it because the shutter was covering the sensor...i’ve also had something similar happen w/an a7r2 after a drop where the sensor stabilization would get stuck and cause an error notification and a restart prompt, i think there is something of a trade off of just robustness for sony cameras compared to larger dslrs especially but also other mirrorless cameras which are still bigger than sony (the gh4/5/5s is bigger than every a7 camera despite having a MUCH smaller sensor, and the same is basically true of sony”s apsc cameras being slightly smaller than canon’s and even fuji’s similar apsc cameras...

i know the previous gen a7r2 was pretty roundly considered, and criticized as, a ‘slow’ camera compared to dslrs, but most of what i’ve read/seen about the a7r3 has praised sony for making it a much more responsive camera...it still isn’t quite as fast as picking up a dslr w/an optical viewfinder but the consensus seemed to be it is pretty snappy; in my experience, the mirrorless cameras (with sony’s being particularly egregious, maybe due to all the stuff packed into the cameras) i’ve used all take a couple of seconds to ‘load’ especially if it has been off for a while (anywhere from 30 mins to a few hours, rather than constant on/off operation)

^ it's not a a7, but when I use my wife's a6300, there are many times where I flip the switch to on, and it takes a solid 5 seconds or so for it to be ready to shoot. Often times, I suspect the battery is dead, only for it to power on a few seconds later.

So I took some portraits today and some pictures are slightly out of focus when I zoom in to look closer. I realized I did use f/2.8 (lowest aperture my lens can go to) so that is probably the issue, but is it that bad if it's just not tack sharp? It's not blurry like I missed focus. It's just not tack sharp. I read it might be ok lol.I am trying to get better and I don't shoot enough so I have to ask. Btw I know you might need to see an example but I'm on my phone at the moment and haven't been home since shooting

What lens are you using and are you shooting RAW?

Yes its raw and sigma 17-50mm 2.8. I had this issue with my 50mm prime and suspected it's back focusing. I stopped using it since I can do 50 on the sigma. Right now i feel like this might be used error this time

Just tell people you were going for the soft focus aesthetic lol.

Lol. You can't really see it unless you zoom in. Well i say that from looking at the on camera screen. Haven't checked on the computer yet

I mean if you love the other aspects of the image such as composition, lighting, etc, I don’t think that should stop you from loving the image overall just because it isn’t tack sharp. I’ve used that sigma 17-50 in the past, and I believe I was having the same happen to me shooting at 2.8.

Oh ok good to know. It usually doesn't happen. I did a shoot two weeks ago and it was fine lol.

I know it's not a Hoya or B+W but figured idI give it a shot for $5. Never used any type of filter before. A CPL probably would've helped with this shot.

I have a few vacations planned out later this year. Brand new to photography but my girl and I would like to invest in a camera that we can take with us on trips. Any recommendations or should I go through everything listed on page 1? Thanks.

Fellas I always forget to post here my bad.

I was in Vegas at the beginning of the month and went hiking to Horseshoe Bend, Grand Canyon and other places. I suggest everyone goes. I can't wait to go back!

^^^^^^^^Nice stuff. How was the drive from Vegas to those AZ spots? I was thinking about doing that trip but wonder if I should go into Vegas or an airport in AZ.

There is a lot to consider when getting a camera whether it be portability, lenses, price, performance, etc. If you are going with price are a pure novice shooter, an entry level DSLR is fine but remember, it's the lens that will give you more character in your shots rather than the body itself. Get yourself a cheap camera body and some cheap lenses to start. If portability is what you want, go with a mirrorless camera whether it be Fuji, Olympus, or Sony. If you know this is going to be a hobby you want to stick with, then I suggest you to save money and get expensive gear off the bat because if you were to get entry level stuff, you will in doubt upgrade in the future causing you to spend more money in the long run.

My personal suggestions, go with Canon or Nikon and any first or third party glass.

Thanks bro, It wasn't bad. The most we drove was like 4 hours and that was to horseshoe bend. Everything else was about 2 hours outside of Vegas. next time i go ill fly into Utah or Arizona cause I'm not into casinos. We went one night and that was enough.

Also, I bought this for my upcoming trip to Colombia this June.

Amazon product ASIN B016ZWS9ZE
I tested it out a little yesterday and I definitely recommend it if anyone likes to edit on the go. I popped my SD card in and was able to transfer over the .NEF files pretty seamlessly. Then I used the RAW 2 DNG app on Android to edit some photos in Snapseed. Really nice that the thing works as a wireless router and a battery bank too. I haven't tried to backup my photos by attaching a hard drive/USB drive but I'm sure that'll work no problem.

I'm going to be traveling the world and documenting my experiences soon. Can someone please link me to the type of lens being used here in this video. This would be perfect for me. Thank you!

to get an answer, you're going to have to be more specific bruv, which shot in the vid? the 360? the drone? the selfie walk n talk?
