The Official Photography Thread - Vol. 3

I still have my old D90. Don't even know what to do with it since it's pretty banged up and isn't worth selling. I pushed that camera as far as I can take it. That camera was the first to have HD video and everything. Almost miss carrying that thing around since my Mark 3 is so heavy and I baby it too much.

Yea the D90 is amazing for its age. I don't think ill ever sell it when I have to upgrade to FX.
What lens did you use primarily?

Almost 90% with the 10.5mm fisheye. Wasn't really out to get super nice photos at the time and more so just capture what I saw. It did great. Sharp on all corners, fast, bokeh when you do it right. But after a while, people just didn't take me serious. Haha. So I had to move on to other lenses. I had the 35mm 1.8 as well and the kit. With all three of those lenses, it covered almost every range I needed.

On another note, recently got another camera body, a D800. My D700 is now a my back up. Fully tested it this past weekend for a wedding I must say amazing camera but the whole 36MP is OD/too much. I bought a Sandisk Extreme 64GB 120MB/s for the D800 and I about 700 images just on that camera body and man... it was at 44GB's worth of photos...Transferring and backing up took FOREVER.

Here are some D800 images,

As always a lot more on the blog.

Hearing more and more about that D800 being overkill for digital photography makes me really settle on the D700. But I like the old fashioned look of the DF

Like alot of tech stuff, you really have to have the computer power to process what your equipment is producing. You can't get a phantom camera or a 4K video recorder and have tons of footage and expect a simple laptop to do the trick. I wouldn't say the D800 is overkill. It just gives you the option to shoot for quality print. The only really thing you can't by pass is RAW files. You can always shoot on medium (5,520 x 3,680) size photos which isn't that bad. Canon Mark 3 large files size is 22.10 Megapixels (5760 x 3840). It's not that off.

Went on a spontaneous Yosemite trip Sunday night. I left at 1am from SF and arrived at 5am. It was my first time but I bought an annual pass and plan on going at least once a month. It's amazing and definitely too big to see in one trip. Here are some of my favorite photos, all taken with my iPhone 6 since I didn't have anything else on me:

I also shot 2 rolls of film (Ilford HP5+ and Kodak Portra 400) so I'll post those once they get developed.

Hey guys, I think I'm gonna go ahead and roll with the Manfrotto 294

Now my next question, it goes in regard to lighting. I will be doing a small photobooth area and was wondering what would be necessary. As of right now I have one 430ex ii. I've never really used flashes off the camera before and always left my flash on ETTL so I have a few questions. I was looking at Amazon and they sold flashes for about $35. My plan was to purchase two flashes and shoot them both simultaneously alongside the 430ex ii. From the little research I've done so far, I can put the two Amazon flashes into slave mode and fire with the built in transmitter from the on camera flash (master?). I was wondering if it was possible to leave my 430 on the hotshoe of the camera and set that as master?

Here is what I plan to purchase
Two flashes
Amazon product ASIN B004LEAYXYThese mounts
Amazon product ASIN B008S1W19Q
Will I need anything else to make this work? I see this product and it has transmitters and receivers and what not? Not sure what they're for/do.
Amazon product ASIN B00NON2JPE

Great shots! Are those straight from the phone?

Thanks man! Yeah I used the Camera+ app since it lets you use the iPhone on Manual (cool right?) and lets you export in TIFF format which is uncompressed (or uses less compression than JPEG, not sure). Then I just sharpened them a bit more and did color correction in Lightroom. They are good enough for web but I wouldn't print them any bigger than 4x6. Next time I'm definitely taking my Nikon D600 and a 24/35mm.

Finally going to invest in a dslr and narrowed it down to either the t3i or d5300. Comments on which one and which takes better photos I mean does the Nikon take pics that shows a significant difference in photo quality? Thanks

Check this site out. I think the D5300 is just newer which makes it better. Built in wifi and things like that is a plus but it also just shoots better quality photos with better ISO. It's pretty much a no brainer. Also Nikon has a lot of affordable DX lenses that are really good from the 35mm and the 50mm.

+1 on the D5300. Like Mr Fongstarr said, the D5300 is newer and has a more advanced feature set. I imagine a T3i would be much cheaper though if that is a big factor in your decision.Just curious, why a T3i rather than a T5i? I'd think T5i vs. D5300 would be more of a fair comparison.
Also, maybe hold out a couple weeks until Black Friday? Last year I bought a D3200 kit for under $500. It came with the standard 18-55mm and 55-200mm. Those two lenses covered pretty much all of my needs as an amateur shooter. Since then I've only picked up the 35 f/1.8G and I highly recommend you pick one up too if you do end up going Nikon DX. I wanna pick up an ultra wide next but as a full-time college student, money's tight lol.

I want a user friendly/beginner DSLR. I keep hearing great things about the t3i(better than the t5i for the money) but the D5300 looks like it takes better photos. I might go with Nikon. Thanks
