^^^That's true. I also think it depends on your expecations and what you want to shoot. Like if I was solely an engagement or portrait photographer, you can definitely go budget and get good glass and a body for a cheaper price. Even landscape photography doesn't require much if you shoot only wide and do everything on photoshop. Then there would be no need for filers and other such things to make the overall cost more than it should. But if you are an open minded shooter and want to learn it all, this hobby definitely gets hectic. I just saw Tony and Chelsea's Sony A9 video where they shot sports and man, that thing is impressive but oddly still can be better. The buffer seemed like it was an issue and it could definitely have an increase in pixels. I'd imagine one day, a company is going to have it all and just have one camera that can be used to shoot anything.

Thoughts on Pentax? Photographer at my job recommended me them since they are cheaper apparently. 

I've been shooting with pentax for 6 years now. I'm looking at picking up the k-1 next. They haven't changed their mount so there's a long list of older lenses to shoot with. Secondary lens companies make plenty K-mount lenses as well, the only issue is that most lenses are made with a crop-sensor camera in mind. They are known for offering similar quality  to Canon/Nikon for a little less. They do make cuts though in order to offer a cheaper price. The video production on their cameras is way behind other companies. If you're just into photography, I think they're a solid option.

Thank you for this. Just to clarify so these cameras would be better than the canon t6i? 

They're all going to marginally different. I wouldnt really say one is "better" than the other in terms of final image output.

Thought this was an interesting article. Not all of it is accurate since you can sell used gear for more money but it shoes how much it takes to change from a Canon System to a Sony one. That is assuming you have all the top gear for Canon and want to get something equivalent for the Sony.

Thanks for posting this, just watched a few episodes and definitely an inspiring show.

Does anyone watch any other shows/web series that are a little more technical? Tales of Light is great but basically seems like a travel show narrated by photographers. I'd love to see something that goes a little more in depth about the choices they are making for composition/lighting/settings etc.

*only if you are a pro shooting sports and/or wildlife, other than that the 2 systems are pretty much in the same ballpark when it comes to the go to lenses 24-70 f2.8 & 70-200 f2.8, what you save on the sony body over the equivalent canon (or nikon) is a quite a bit...it will be interesting to see what sony does bring to the a7 series updates...

jared polin, aka/bka fro knows photo, has a pretty good youtube series called '5 min portrait' that is worth checking out, he is a lil cheesy but generally gives great insight into his process in these type things; matt granger is pretty good source as well...there are actually quite a few examples you can find on vimeo & the youtubes that get into/talk about the process...

So I'm looking for a new 50mm! I've been having real inconsistency issues with my nifty fifty.

The obvious pickup would be the 50mm STM for it's bang for buck.

I wouldn't mind getting the Canon 50mm 1.4, but I've heard it's not really worth it over the STM.

But I have heard good things about the Sigma 50mm (non-art). Anyone ever use this lens?

Thanks for posting the links to tales of the light definitely going to check those out! I took a few shots with my friends 35mm 1.4 art. The focus on that thing is definitely hit or miss and I missed a lot of the times. When I did get the focus right the results are . If I wasn't spending all this money on building a pc I'd scoop one up the first chance I get at a reasonable price.
