PS4: new kits shipping now, AMD A10 used as base

1000

Developers are currently taking receipt of a new PlayStation 4 dev kit, VG247 has been told today, with a final version slated to appear in January. Yes, it’ll have Blu-ray. No, it isn’t being made in Japan.

Multiple sources have confirmed to VG247 today that a new version of the Orbis kit is now shipping to developers, and that it’s housed in a normal PC case.

There are to be four versions of the dev kit, we were told. A previous version was essentially just a graphics card. The version shipping now is a “modified PC,” and the third version, appearing in January, will be close to final spec. A final version will be delivered to developers “next summer”.

Some US developers attended a “disclosure meeting” at Sony’s offices this week, with a further meeting to take place in the coming weeks. The purpose of the meeting is for Sony to tell studios what the machine is designed to do, to detail hardware and to show a set of presentations.

Our source told us that Sony is only calling the machine Orbis, and is not using the words “PlayStation 4″ in these meetings at all.

Orbis, we were told today, is based on the AMD’s A10 APU series. An APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) is a combined CPU and GPU.

PS4′s APU was described today as a “derivative” of existing A10 hardware. The hardware is “based on A10 system and base platform”.

The “ultimate goal” for the hardware, we were told, is for it to be able to run 1080p60 games in 3D with “no problem,” to create a machine that’s powerful enough for “today and tomorrow’s market”.

The dev kits have “either 8Gb or 16Gb of RAM. Deduce from that what you will.”

The hardware is not being made in Japan, it was said.

When asked if PS4 will have an optical drive, specifically Blu-ray, our source responded: “Of course it has.” We’ve been told the hard drive will be 256Gb “as standard,” but it’s not clear if it’ll be a normal HDD or a solid state drive.

We were told that Sony’s aim with Orbis is to avoid problems involved in launching PS3 by creating something “very affordable” but that “isn’t a slouch”.

The machine has WiFi and Ethernet connectivity and HDMI out. Our source said the was “no difference” between PlayStation 3 and Orbis input/output.

The UI, however, has been revamped. It was said today that players will now be able to press the PS button mid-game and travel “anywhere” on the system. An example given was buying DLC from the PS Store mid-game then seamlessly returning to play.

“They’re trying to make it as fluid as possible,” our source said.

We were also told that the machine will be designed to accept system and product updates in the background, and that it’ll “always be in standby mode”. When you set the console up, we were told, you’ll be asked if you want to allow background downloads. You can, of course, disallow them.

No details have been given on the pad as yet. Confirmation is expected this month.

Orbis is expected to be announced at an event “just before E3″ next year.

Spring 2013 leading up to E3 2013 is going to be nuts.GTA V drops. Then both Sony & Microsoft are more than likely going to unveil their next gen consoles.

I wonder if Sony is going to delay God Of War Ascension which is due out on 3-12-13.If GTA V releases in March or April. If GTA V releases in May 2013 then I think Sony will still release God Of War Ascension on it's OG release date.

Dead Island Riptide is due out on 4-23-13 and I'm pretty sure that game will get delayed and avoid GTA V's path :lol

If they haven't maxed the PS3 abilities in 7 years, they're not going to now. It's time for new consoles.

They didn't max out the PS2's ability until God of War, which came out around E3 05 when they demoed the PS3, then the PS3 came out in 06.

Is the PSVita worth getting. I'm not sure if I should pull the trigger. If so, it will probably be Black Friday time.

Anyone else have a screwy PSN connection right now? My friend's list doesn't load for anything.

Now would be the time to get one. AC3 Liberation, NFS Most Wanted, COD Black Ops Declassified all coming out.

Uncharted Golden Abyss is :hat too.

Still :{ @ 2K releasing 2K13 on the PSP and not the Vita. At this point 2K for iOS >>> 2K for PSP.

Mass Effect Trilogy pushed to Dec. 4 on PS3

by David Hinkle Writer RSS (1 hour ago)

Mass Effect Trilogy is coming to the PS3 on December 4 in North America and December 7 in Europe, just in time for the Hanar holiday festivities. Hanars make the best sugar cookies.

The new release bundles all three Mass Effect games in one sleek black N7 box. The original Mass Effect, which is playable on Sony's system for the first time, will also be available for download through PSN.

BioWare already detailed the DLC available on each platform: The "Bring Down the Sky" mission will be included with Mass Effect on the PS3, whether downloaded through PSN or within the Mass Effect Trilogy. The PC version of Mass Effect will include Bring Down the Sky and Pinnacle Station, while the Xbox 360 version will be just as it originally was when it launched back in 2007, sans that DLC and sky fully intact.

PS3, Xbox 360 and PC all get Cerberus Network with Mass Effect 2; however, on the PS3, it'll also include Lair of the Shadow Broker, Kasumi and Overlord. Finally, Mass Effect 3 will include Cerberus Network across all platforms, but not the most recent expansion, "Leviathan."

Mass Effect Trilogy will be available next week on the PC and Xbox 360 – November 6 in the US and November 9 in Europe.

anyone hop on that buy2get1 free deal at Target? bout to go today in hopes that some of the major titles are still available being that not many have been able to shop due to the hurricane. i want AC3, 2K12, Madden13 and Need For Speed: MW. I got a decision to make!

ACIII is amazing.
The graphics are bananas, probably rivaling Uncharted III. In the beginining when you are sailing to Boston, it has the most realistic looking watter. The story is pretty good, and I still havent got to the meat of it. Already put in 5hrs with Nathan and having fun. Great sound effect, side story is awesome. The mini games suck though, I cant win ANY.

Do you need to play AC 1 and 2 to enjoy it?

The game play looks great and all the reviews are positive.

I just don't want to be completely lost through the game.

Is 3 worth jumping into?
I never played AC1 or 2, so I'm not sure bro.

There are instances in the game wheny they reference back to the earlier games, but they're very minimal. The story line on it's own holds up exceptionable well.

BTW, I've met Benjimen Franklin and George Washington so far, and I finally am playing as the young sung hero :smokin

Honestly, you could start with III and be fine.

Only thing you might be lost with is the Desmond storyline, but just hit up IGN's Assassin's Creed in 7 minutes and it'll bring you up to speed.

Spoilers for AC I, II, Brotherhood, and Revelations obviously.

Wow, great video, thanks chris!

I think that's pretty low still. A system thats gonna go on to probably 2020, I'd bump it up to 32GB, hell 64 if you're feeling lucky.
youre joking right?  the consoles would be very lucky to have 8gb

not to mention im pretty sure something like 32gb alone would bump the console up a thousand dollars

About 42 hours into Skyrim, almost have the platinum.

It has been really good... but not great. Its like Fallout... alot of the quests are the same and alot seem just tacked on to extend playtime. Not a ton of variety in items or armour. But the scale of the game is pretty huge.

Other than the DLC fiasco, Bethesda seems to have done a good job fixing issues. Its frozen once or twice on me, but nothing other than that.

This Murder Club I've joined has been quite fun. (Dark Brotherhood).
