The Old PlayStation Thread | *NEW THREAD IS UP*

Damn might actually have to build a new gaming pc now. New cpu/gpu/ssd/ram seems at the first noticeable shift in tech in a minute.

After watching the Nvidia conference, even I'm tempted.
I'm building a new PC this year for productivity but after seeing that, a 3070 is tempting me.

One thing about BC with Xbox versus PS is that I don’t expect Sony to put in the effort that MS has. If I’m just getting PS1 games on PS5, it’s not a big deal to me.

MS definitely do care more though since they have a whole team dedicated to BC and implementing HDR for older games is impressive.

Sony are at a bigger disadvantage with BC due to architecture though. PS3 and PS2 had exotic hardware so BC is harder. PS3 needed physical PS2 hardware to run the games properly.
PS1 will mean having to include the red laser to read CDs in addition to Blu-rays.

Also, Sony allows you to code to a lower level with their hardware so you can squeeze more of it and to make it easier to develop for. This is why 1st party titles look so good because you can get really specific when only developing for one hardware. The downside to this is that for games on older consoles to run on newer consoles, you will need the new hardware to either emulate everything about the old console or add in hardware from the old console to run old games properly. Like the 60GB PS3s.

Emulation is resource intensive in the case of the PS3 and even when it isn't in the case of PS2 for example, you will still need to test every game for bugs because they were coded for different hardware.

MS on the other hand built the Xbox more like a PC where you abstract the game from the hardware. Similar to how PC's can come in all sorts of hardware configs but still all run Windows.
The only downside to this route is you don't get that lower level access to the hardware so you can't be as specific as you can with PlayStation but you can port the games from Xbox to PC easier.

Again, it's that different approach to generations between the two.

TL: DR

PS1 is too old and including a CD laser is a waste of money
PS2 is possible but will involve testing thousands of games for bugs. Ain't nobody got time for that.
PS3 is too hard to emulate. PC's today have a hard time emulating it.
PS4 to PS5 will be a smooth transition. No exotic architecture transition. Should be all gravy

I wasn’t around NT at the beginning of the PS3/360 gen but anybody who denied party chat was trippin’
I think party chat and Halo touted Microsoft reins over Sony for the first few years. Cleary Sony didn't think about online or the future of it till halfway through PS3 life cycle. Idiots, lol.

Finally got it right with PS4... sort of. Hopefully the PS5 online and network support is better, way better.

Thank you all for this; feel like there's a 'herd' mentality as far as 'BC/backwards-compatibility' goes. With the trend towards all digital and SONY/MS showing hard numbers that people prefer digital vs. physical media (I don't personally), I find it hard to believe that the majority of PS5 owners are going to (physically) go to their game library/archive/closet/mom's garage and dust out their old PS1/PS2 games.

I'll date myself here and say that SNES didn't play NES games and the N64 didn't play SNES or NES. FWIW, keep your old systems and prevent them from ending up in landfills. There are so many affordable options to play those old joints on current TVs right now. Hooking up to your TV should take about 5-10 minutes at the most.
This was a time though where we really couldn't envision several generations of game consoles to the point we may reach #10 sooner than later.

Also back then the SNES wasn't capable of backwards compatibility to the extent it wasn't really conceivable.

At a high level this could be done as the Sega Genesis/MD had the 'Power Base' which allowed it to play Master System games. That said you could probably buy an actual Master System for a helluva lot cheaper at that time instead of having to plug/unplug some attachment that could put wear and tear on your cartridge slot.

Nintendo could've done the same but the finance guys probably vetoed that as you essentially want to move new hardware, game cartridges, etc...

people do want to play old games
folks playing/buying nes super mario bros
20 times is proof of this

nawghtyhare nawghtyhare I have no issues with backward compatibility from a 'digital/online' shop perspective. You purchase a game on PSN/Xbox Live! on the PS3/XBOX 360 platform and there's no reason why it shouldn't persist on the PS5 & XBox Series X.

Companies want to go all digital then don't have a double standard with backwards compatibility from that perspective.

I'll probably regret admitting this to you but Nintendo is kind of an exception, imo. Their catalog of first party games is filled with masterpieces and very good games. They're also very family friendly and can help usher in the younger generation. I can put in SMW and I know that I'll actually finish it. 99% of the people who pop in MGS1 are not going to finish it. PS1, N64 games look like ****. This doesn't apply to everybody but majority of the people who buy PS5 are buying it for PS5 games. You know up front that you won't have access to PS1, PS2 and PS3 games so that's on you if you decided to get rid of your old consoles.

All that said, I fully believe that your purchased digital library should be available to you on future hardware. I can't say the same for discs cause that creates different issues that aren't worth the price.
