I heard you can only play in observation mode on level 1. In level 2, you start paying bills and THEN the thermostat controls are unlocked.

Yup. Level 3 unlocks the wife and level 4 unlocks the kids. At that point it pretty much turns into a tower defense game.

Two interesting inclusionary criteria if something is or is not a Christmas movie I read recently:

1.) Does watching the film, in any other time a year, feel weird? (No, for Die Hard, so is it a Christmas movie? By that test, no)

2.) If you take Christmas out of the movie, does it still make sense? (Yes, for Die Hard, so is it a Christmas movie? By that test, no)

Home Alone is considered a Christmas movie and it has the same premise as Die Hard only a house instead of Nakatomi Plaza and a kid instead of Bruce Willis. That's right, close your eyes, think about it slowly.....now open them. Same movie, diff settings is all.
