Oh I know wasn't sure if u got his points mixed up with his ageI was being sarcastic about Scola
OK, but using your definition of bust, you can make arguments that really good players are busts just because the expectations for them were so great. Is Blake Griffin a bust because he’s never won MVP or been past the 2nd round of the playoffs, when multiple guys drafted after him in his class have?
I’ve always understood bust to mean a prospect that doesn’t just fail to meet expectations, but doesn’t even come remotely close to meeting expectations.
Blake Griffin has been an elite NBA player for his entire career
He has the numbers and the individual accolades.
Where on earth in my definition of a bust did I suggest something as specific as being an MVP or reaching a certain playoff round as things that make someone a bust or not?
Ya'll doing gymnastics to shield Rubio here. He's played 10 seasons. 8 of them on really bad teams. He hasn't played in any all star games. He hasn't made any all nba teams. He had his career year in his first year in Utah...and after year 2 they decided they couldn't go further as a team unless they upgraded his position. This is not the career that was expected from the consensus when Ricky Rubio entered the NBA.
It's time to talk about this now that he's got 10 years in.
Ricky Rubio is the textbook definition of a bust. The outcome didn't match the hype.
Based on that definition 80% of picks are busts. If you reach your potential as a top lotto pick you’re pretty much instantly a HoF.
Just think about how many players in each draft actually reach their full potential. Maybe a handful per draft?
Me personally off top these guys are actual busts:
Derrick Williams
Anthony Bennett
Marvin Williams
Jabari
Wiggins
Flynn
Darko
In terms of Euro prospect hype:
Luka > Darko > Rubio
What criteria justifies Wiggins being a bust and Rubio not being one?
I was.I’m going to disagree with Darko here...simply because of technology. Rubio hype leading up to 2009-2010 was mich higher than Darko in 2003. Unless you were you a serious hoop nerd, you didn’t even know who Darko was until pre-draft.
Right, but I never mentioned anything about being the most hyped Euro prospect. My question was specificIt's not fuzzy for me. Many of us remember it very clearly. Before Luka, Ricky Rubio was THE most hyped European prospect ever. There were circumstances that led to him being the 5th pick. 1) He had a ridiculous buyout and there was uncertainty around when he'd actually come over. and 2) He refused to work out for Memphis (#2 pick).
Misread your question. Twice. He lost in the first round 9 times. How many times did Carmelo exit the first round in his career? Twice maybe?
Summed it up perfectly big dawg...nobody should be surprised when/if they lose without the top level players ...alotta the other countries best players good enough to play a role on USA squads too, a few might even startI don’t always agree with Kirby, but he’s right about this. The gap has closed enough that if we don’t send all our best players to international competitions, we can’t expect to win. And, for various reasons, we’re not always going to get all all-NBAers to go. It is what is and my nationalist pride has diminished enough to a point I don’t really care.
But as a basketball fan, I’m happy to have hoops to follow in the Summer whether the US wins or not.
