OK, but using your definition of bust, you can make arguments that really good players are busts just because the expectations for them were so great. Is Blake Griffin a bust because he’s never won MVP or been past the 2nd round of the playoffs, when multiple guys drafted after him in his class have?

I’ve always understood bust to mean a prospect that doesn’t just fail to meet expectations, but doesn’t even come remotely close to meeting expectations.

Blake Griffin has been an elite NBA player for his entire career

He has the numbers and the individual accolades.

Where on earth in my definition of a bust did I suggest something as specific as being an MVP or reaching a certain playoff round as things that make someone a bust or not?

Ya'll doing gymnastics to shield Rubio here. He's played 10 seasons. 8 of them on really bad teams. He hasn't played in any all star games. He hasn't made any all nba teams. He had his career year in his first year in Utah...and after year 2 they decided they couldn't go further as a team unless they upgraded his position. This is not the career that was expected from the consensus when Ricky Rubio entered the NBA.

Yeah, and I still don’t think “not having the career expected” necessarily = “bust” under what always has been my understanding of that term. But it’s semantics, I guess. Rubio is a bust.

Elite prospect.

It's time to talk about this now that he's got 10 years in.

Ricky Rubio is the textbook definition of a bust. The outcome didn't match the hype.

100%, in that Joe Smith class like you said. After that team USA game, people were talking like the second coming of Magic was here.

Also never understood how he was a pro at 15 and was a worse shooter than Rondo.... all the way through his rookie deal. His mechanics were comically bad.

Based on that definition 80% of picks are busts. If you reach your potential as a top lotto pick you’re pretty much instantly a HoF.

Just think about how many players in each draft actually reach their full potential. Maybe a handful per draft?

Me personally off top these guys are actual busts:

Derrick Williams
Anthony Bennett
Marvin Williams
Jabari
Wiggins
Flynn
Darko

What criteria justifies Wiggins being a bust and Rubio not being one?

man Wiggins was posed to be what Kawhi is right now

or at least in terms of how hype he was

In terms of Euro prospect hype:

Luka > Darko > Rubio

I’m going to disagree with Darko here...simply because of technology. Rubio hype leading up to 2009-2010 was mich higher than Darko in 2003. Unless you were you a serious hoop nerd, you didn’t even know who Darko was until pre-draft.

I was.

Then again the only NBA draft resources back then were Chad Ford and nbadraft.net

It's not fuzzy for me. Many of us remember it very clearly. Before Luka, Ricky Rubio was THE most hyped European prospect ever. There were circumstances that led to him being the 5th pick. 1) He had a ridiculous buyout and there was uncertainty around when he'd actually come over. and 2) He refused to work out for Memphis (#2 pick).
Right, but I never mentioned anything about being the most hyped Euro prospect. My question was specific

If he truly was touted as generational, falling to #5 despite circumstances doesn't add up. I don't doubt the general consensus was that he could be a generational passer. That I can get on board with, for sure

I remember clearly that there were questions about his scoring and more importantly his shooting from pre-draft through the 2 years he spent in Europe after being drafted

I just looked at his Draftexpress profile to see if there was anything that stood out and sure enough most of the articles mentioned these things. Definitely a good deal of hype on his playmaking but mixed in with some real curiosity as to how he'd fare in the NBA

Giovanny in Feb 2009: "Speaking of which, you're going to find a lot of differing opinions about Rubio's ability to translate his style of play to the NBA. Some scouts still question his athleticism and perimeter shooting" - Source: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/ricky-rubio-1155/ ©DraftExpress

Don’t compare Luka to Rubio

Luka was Euroleage MVP and Champion at 18

Rubio was a kid with a mixtape of passes

Rubio hype was off of the charts. He is a bust based on the hype. Ricky Bumio.

For the injuries he had, combined with the fact that he'd start for more than half the league still, really hard to label him an actual bust.

Didnt live up to expectations? Sure.

Flat out bust? No way.

I don’t always agree with Kirby, but he’s right about this. The gap has closed enough that if we don’t send all our best players to international competitions, we can’t expect to win. And, for various reasons, we’re not always going to get all all-NBAers to go. It is what is and my nationalist pride has diminished enough to a point I don’t really care.

But as a basketball fan, I’m happy to have hoops to follow in the Summer whether the US wins or not.
Summed it up perfectly big dawg...nobody should be surprised when/if they lose without the top level players ...alotta the other countries best players good enough to play a role on USA squads too, a few might even start

King of the court with Jimmy Harden. Who invited Stanley Johnson dawg?? thought iron sharpens iron? Bruh one of those sticks that comes with the cheese n crackers
