In a federal lawsuit filed Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, sheriff’s deputy Alan Strickland and his wife Kelly Strickland are seeking a jury trial to resolve the matter. They are also seeking general damages in excess of the minimum jurisdictional amount of $75,000, as well as punitive damages, medical and incidental expenses, future medical and incidental expenses, loss of earnings, prejudgment interest, property damage, legal fees, and any other relief the court would find.

Alameda County sheriff's deputy sues Raptors president Masai Ujiri for alleged assault

Despite charges not being filed for alleged assault, a sheriff's deputy claims Raptors president Masai Ujiri "hit him in the face and chest."

this is fairly typical for any personal injury lawsuit. It’s more or less to drum up enough facts to get the other side to settle because it’s cheaper to settle than litigate.

Different burdens of proof. Criminal trials require beyond a reasonable doubt, civil requires by preponderance of the evidence.

Same reason why OJ was not guilty of murder but held responsible for the deaths in the civil suit and they ran his pockets.

Burden of proof in civil court is not anywhere near what's required in legal disputes.

This is desperation, but it's also extremely common for cases like this to get settlements because it's just easier and less headaches.
