Amin El-Hassan did a multi-part interview on his time with the Suns front office. on Le Batard's podcast.

Marion got moved because of contract and he wanted more credit for how good he was and that that was a huge source of frustration for him. He was showing frustration over touches and shots in the locker room too apparently. His agent was set on getting him a max too and they couldn't give him that because Amare was about to be up on getting his new contract.

Apparently Sarver and Arrison were complaining about their issues with Matrix and Shaq respectively, and that's what got the ball rolling. They weren't getting good offers for Marion (and wanted to pair Marcus Banks with him) and his agent told them if he gets sent to a bad team they would tank it because Marion had a secret knee condition that didn't affect him but would show up if he brought it up and got a scan done on it. (Still don't know how this slid by team physicals if true)
One of the Suns staff guys said Shaq's physical issues weren't something to worry about and that from the film he just needed 2 weeks to get Shaq in Suns shape. They thought he was half assing it because he was frustrated with not getting as much love as Wade post-championship.

They decided they could make it work and they weren't getting a better offer and were sick of Marion creating tension all the time so they pulled the trigger. He said Dantoni was totally fine with it and they just figured since they were losing the same way to the same team every year switching it up might not be a bad thing. They weren't overly excited about getting him but basically were like **** it we'll take Shaq
