Yea I planned to stay downtown for most of the time. Sounds like a rental car is a must if I go anywhere else.

Deciding who's funeral to go to or whether you should wear the pink gators with matching mink

or cartier sunglass with the lime green ostrich tip loafers with the flamingo skin trench coat.

Eat some chili fries and make it home safe.

Or you can cross 8mile and deal with the many levels of BLATANT racism and UNWARM WELCOMES.

If you rent a car you should head over to Windsor, there's a lot of bars/clubs/strip clubs in downtown Windsor (as well as Caesars Windsor) and you can get there in 10-15 minutes from downtown Detroit through the tunnel. You can also take a tunnel bus over to Windsor if you don't rent a car. In Detroit it would probably be best to just stay in the downtown area. As Uptowns said, there's casinos and some good restaurants in downtown Detroit but there's really nothing to do in the rest of Detroit itself unless you head out to the suburbs. There's a lot to do in Royal Oak and there's some good malls like Somerset Collection and Great Lakes Crossing. Great Lakes Crossing is very close to the Palace about 30 minutes outside of Detroit so if you rent a car you should definitely try to catch a Pistons game.

The only thing worth doing while in Detroit is watching the Red Wings play. If you're not a hockey fan then there really isn't a reason to visit the Motor City.

Detroit has a lot to offer but it is very scattered and has a lot of hidden gems.

-Red Wings Games
-Broadway Shows at the fisher theatre
-Detroit Opera House
-Detroit Symphony Orchestra
-Taste fest (over the summer)
-Hart Plaza festivals (Detroit Electronic Music Festival, African World Festival, Hoedown etc.)
-Infinity and Ovation Yacht Charters to cruise the river (especially beautiful around sunset.)
-African American Museum
-Detroit Science Center
-Detroit Historical Museum
-Detroit Institute of the Arts
-Greek Town
-Mexican Town
-Eastern Market
-Hard Rock Cafe
-Belle Isle which is the largest Island Park in the united states (great place to barbeque and relax in the summer).
-Campus Martius Park which has ice skating and the winter blast during the winter
-Motown Museum
-Dearborn (has amazing arabic food)
-Heidelberg Project
-Riverwalk
-Cruise Lake Shore Drive, bordered by Lake St. Clair on one side and the stately homes of some of Detroit's old money. You can also see the home of Edsel and Eleanor Ford.
-Woodward Dream Cruise happens during the summer as well where you will see a lot of classic cars cruising woodward avenue.
-Some of my favorite boutiques downtown include Spectacles which is a really cool clothing store and Bob's Classic Kicks.
-Great Dining as well throughout the city in all price points.

Birmingham (where I live) has a lot of great dining and upscale nightlife such as South Bar, The Corner, The Hamilton Room. It also has quite a few nice boutiques, some of my favorites include Pogo Skate shop which carries SB's, cool fitted caps, Revive which is a streetwear/sneaker store, Caruso Caruso which has designer jeans and great t-shirts. Also, some really nice homes if you like real-estate. Also, some great homes on Lahser road down near 16 mile and further up as well as Franklin and Orchard Lake area off of the lake. Somerset Mall is very close and also has some great restaurants in close proximity to it.

Royal Oak has a lot of great restaurants and Bars as someone else mentioned and has some cool stores as well. A lot of boutiques, my favorite's being Funky 7 for cool t-shirts and Burn Rubber which also carries sneakers and street wear. Metals in Time is a great jewelry store that my family frequents they have a great selection of watches and other jewelry.

If you have any specific interests don't hesitate to PM me and I can let you know about a few of the places that are hidden throughout metro detroit.
