Was MJ an average athlete??

VC was a better dunker than MJ but that athleticism definitely didn't translate into being the better athlete than MJ.

U can throw Lebron James in there too. I thought we were only discussing athleticism here. Not how it translated to basketball skills. Cause obviously MJ was a better basketball player than VC.

Why hasn't a mod locked this thread yet?  I haven't read a single post, but it is still at the top of the forum.

Where to start....of course MJ was a ridiculous athlete. Bill was messing around. What makes MJ the best in my mind is the way that he changed his game when his athletic gifts started diminishing. The question we should ask is was he simply a great athlete or was he a freak of nature? There's a difference. Kobe is a top flight athlete. Lebron is a freak of nature. Nate Robinson is a freak of nature. Allen Iverson is a freak of nature. Shaq was a freak of nature. There's a difference.

As far as the other points, I'm taking Kareem over Hakeem all day, every day, and twice on Sunday. I love Bird but he's not in my top five. Kobe is an all time great but I have trouble forgiving him for the finals loss to the Pistons. You had Shaq being covered by Ben Wallace. I don't care if the press is raving about Tayshaun's defense on you. Give the ball to Shaq and let him destroy Ben. I also fault him for the loss to OKC in the playoffs. That team could have won. They had two dominant seven footers WHO COULD SHOOT FREETHROWS!!! They give the ball to Andrew, they win that series. Point blank. OKC couldn't stop him. What happened in the closing moments of games in that series? Hero basketball. Taking 25 footers in the fourth when you've been dominating the game inside(yeah I'm still trying to get over it :lol) Kobe is a fantastic player but I think his competitive nature sometimes clouds his decision making on the court.

This old man's starting five....

Magic
MJ
Bron
Duncan
Kareem/Motivated Shaq

Don't get me wrong. I think Hakeem had the best footwork of any center I've ever seen. I'm still taking Kareem and that unstoppable move.

random.

People really get blinded by melanin when it comes to describing who is and isn't a good athlete. People been telling me that bird wasn't a good athlete but look at bird getting UP with Doctor J, not quite as high as the doc but still. :lol

Bird was a great athlete. Bobby Knight said he thought Larry Bird had the best hand-eye coordination of any Basketball player ever. Like I posted above Magic only had a vertical leap of 2 inches higher than Bird. And nobody questions Magic's athletism.

Ok how old are some of you guys really?? if your born in the 90s no need to comment about this thread I went to basketball games as a kid in the late 80s and all of 90s bird and magic lakers/celtics rivalry saved basketball bird by far the greatest leader/scorer ever in basketball the only person that he had to beat was magic because magic was unstoppable he played all 5 positions great not just good and the only reason why Jordan is the greatest player of all time is not because he has 6 rings because bill Russell has the most but because Jordan and the Bulls had to beat magic and the lakers because in the late 80s early 90s the lakers/showtime was the greatest team ever at the time and still is

Magic's run was over when MJ emerged. MJ had to go through the Pistons. A piston team that is often overlooked by historians. They were an errant Isiah Thomas pass(or a Bird steal, if you rather) from playing in four straight finals. That team was a great team.

How old was Doc in that picture?! Doc was 75 years old in that picture. I'm only half kidding.

Doc still got his whole hand over Birds, that's Mchale's hand that's up in front of Birds, but u can still see Larry gettin up.

I get your point but nobody claims magic had great athleticism either.
But nobody claims he was as slow and couldn't jump the way Bird gets talked about. I'd say Magic was pretty damn athletic. There is more to athleticism than jumping. Magic had great hand eye coordination too. Great footwork. Great hands. Which is what allowed him to be a 6'9 PG. And also able to guard all 5 positions on the floor.
