Another route they can go too for xmen is introduce Inhumans which are basically ancient civilization of humans who were experimented on by Kree (enter Kree) creating Inhumans. They achieve their powers through terragenesis though. Inhumans get the standard hatred for being different and are exiled/shunned. In comic, earth X inhumans release terragenesis mist on earth, causing powers.

Half the movie based on theory then. They're traveling light speed through space, teleporting, have nanotech figured out. But nitpicking the time travel when they clearly put a lot of time and effort into that aspect
