Went to Stockton CA this weekend

If you're involved with UOP, Stockton isn't horrible. If you're not involved with UOP, I can't understand what is appealing about Stockton. The port? The waterfront area? Anything that goes on in Stockton goes on in every other town of any size up and down the 99 corridor. (which is to say, if the people of stockton make it as bad as it is... then some of those places that have less people are more enjoyable than stockton. Galt and Lodi for example, have less to do than stockton, but anything that you do in galt and lodi would probably be more enjoyable than stockton.)

We shouldn't even discuss modesto.

I've been in Sacramento for the past 5 years. I love it. (I also love to hate it. it has it's problems, and i enjoy complaining about them.) Whenever anybody asks me what there is to do in Sacramento, i usually don't know how to answer. I have fun here. I'm not sure how, but i do. The American River bike trail is an under appreciated JEWEL in this region. I've biked from Davis to Natomas, Natomas to East Sac, East Sac to Folsom and back. Only ran over one skunk. I can ride my bike 30 miles without seeing a car. I've tried riding bikes in a few other areas as a means to get around, and Sacramento is by far the MOST CONVENIENT and ENJOYABLE and SAFE place to make bicycling a part of my life. There aren't a lot of bars... but there are enough to migrate around to. Sacramento lets me float down the American river with a few friends and a few beers. The community is diverse; there are several different cultural groups, public events, and festivals and musical performances. I'm still finding neighborhoods of Sacramento that i've never been through.

Sacramento is like my base of operations. I've used it to weekend in Napa, Weed, Redding, Shasta, Auburn, Tahoe, Pollock, Placerville, Folsom, Locke, Plymouth, Jackson. All of those towns have a unique and identifiable character. I could spend a few hours in them and really get a feel for them. And there's so many different little variations and reasons to just stop in on your way somewhere else that makes them worth coming back to and enjoying every so often.

I have no problem admitting that most cities in the Bay Area have more features and options. And San Francisco is a true WORLD CLASS DESTINATION. but sometimes i get overwhelmed by all of the hustle and bustle. Sacramento is just right for me, and i enjoy that the slow pace and low key activities keep some people away.

But i do hold my breath and lock the doors everytime we drive through stockton.

Can anybody tell me what people in stockton do for work? I get the sense that out of 10 people, 5 work in agriculture, 2 work in local government/education/health, 1 works in retail and 2 are unemployed... Is that about right?

I'm a small Asian cat and I have no problems in downtown Oakland. If you were scared downtown, you are SOFT. Maybe if you were in the East, West or North, but downtown Oak is extra regular.

This, and if any of the current politician clowns, not named KJ or his staff, in this city get the boot; Sacto will slowly be able to develop into a larger, more respectable state capital and pick up the pace and activities this city has to offer while still maintaining that small town feel.

Exactly...downtown Oakland is just like Hayward...don't do anything stupid and you'll be fine.

Step into East and it's a completely different story.

. OF COURSE. But the fact the bay contains those 4 cities means Bay > Sac. So us Bay dudes still have a reason for @%$@@!*! on Sac. Not gonna lie though, being here at Davis, I go to sac to get my Asian groceries and Pho fixes. Can't stand the pho here in davis...even after a night of drinking I'd sooner drive out to Stockton in Sac with all the little Asian plazas for something legit. Haven't checked out Sac's night life, though.
That's why you can't group the whole bay and compare it to Sac.
Sacramento<San Francisco

Sacramento> Oakland

Sacramento = San Jose

Sacramento > Richmond, Hercules, Berkeley, Vallejo, Fairfield, Antioch, Daly City, Hayward, just to name a few..

The only thing ANY of those cities have over Sacramento is their proximity to San Francisco..
SF, Oakland, and Berkeley > Sac
You might be right with everything else although San Jose is probably better also.

Too much ignorance in this thread

, a lot of Cali NT'ers don't really know wassup with NorCal or SoCal (good or bad).
It seems the only ones dropping knowledge about spots is Fongstar and Ham.
pimp.gif

As someone who's lived in both places (and visited and stayed around Central Cali and the San Joaquin Valley) I'll chime in my two cents.

For relevance of the thread, I'll admit. Other than attending/working at UOP, having a business or working in healthcare and/or unless you have family or a significant other. You really have no business in any part of the 209, plain and simple. Granted it was good for development in the early 2000s before the real estate market collapsed and a lot of gated communities began to develop, (especially in Stockton and Modesto).

In terms of what's good in NorCal (Silicon Valley, mostly San Jose) got some cool spots, San Francisco (given) and surprisingly Oakland has cleaned up within the past decade. Downtown Oakland, was literally a ghost town in the 80s and 90s. Until hipsters, investors and younger people who wanted an alternative to afford lofts/luxury suites near the lake/bay instead of paying the premium prices of rent in SF. Lukas, Bit Burger, Lake Merritt, Fox Theatre, and Chinatown, has some exceptional grub and bars to chill at. As for places to raise a family: Silicon Valley, Nob Hill/Hayes Valley, Oakland Hills, Berkeley Hills, Rockridge, Danville, and more. As for Sacramento, I can barely comment on it because I haven't lived nor been around there a lot, other than my few visits to UC Davis, which doesn't count.

Unappealing Parts of NorCal: Deep East Oakland, Deep West Oakland, Certain parts of Berkeley, Richmond, Tenderloin District (in SF) and apparently some parts of San Jose. Cons of living here, can have too much hustle and bustle, depending on the area can be more family oriented and/or unless you got the money or live in an area with a lot of young people, you can get bored.

SoCal is also a different side to California. Again to start out with the Good stuff, you got: In LA (Downtown, Larchmont, Little Tokyo, Wildshire, Beverly Hills and Hollywood), outer LA County cities: Long Beach (although some may consider it borderline OC), Santa Monica, Burbank, Torrance, Rancho Palos Verdes, Pasadena, San Gabriel Valley and Cerritos.

Whereas in Orange County, the good parts are in: Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Corona Del Mar, Fullerton, Anaheim, Anaheim Hills and more.

Unappealing Parts of SoCal: Inland Empire (the outskirts and places that aren't University or gated community influenced), Santa Ana (minus Downtown Santa Ana, they got some nice joints out there), San Fernando Valley (unless you work in porn or the movie industry, not so much appeal in living/working out here) and the desert area Victorville, Hesperia and etc.

Stockton is awful but it's nothing like the Bay Area. SF is my favorite part of the Bay but the Peninsula and Silicon Valley are cool too, just different. SF is great if you're young and single but I rather raise a family in somewhere like Palo Alto or Mountain View than SF.

My whole life I've lived in Mountain View, one of the nicest cities in the bay area perfect place to raise a family. I've had the same friends since preschool all great people you couldn't ask for anything better we have one of the top 5 public high schools in the state, also I'm certain the average of murders a year have been 0 the past 5 or so years now.My post sound like a mountain view brouchure

I went to undergrad in that area and then lived on the Sunnyvale/Mountain View border for 2 years after. That place is

I would. I grew up in Cerritos, for the days when no one feels like going all the way to Venice/Santa Monica, HB is

You're really lumping in the SFV with the IE and Victorville? There are some nice areas in the SFV like Encino, Porter Ranch, Northridge, Calabasas, etc. You also mention Burbank as good forgetting it is in the SFV. More or less it's a better place in terms of raising a family with a decent commute (depending on traffic) to Hollywood/Downtown. Sure it's not as "cool" as living within the city but considering it the same as the IE is ridiculous.

I don't know if I would put those two cities on that list. For the very reason you mentioned, too. You could be in San Francisco in 5 minutes.

Plus if you don't want to deal with the city they have the basic things you need. Malls, Theatres, Bowling Alleys, etc.

Plus Daly City has In and Out, Krispy Creme a Century 20, Best Buy, 2 Targets, etc.

Again this is no knock on Sac. Those other cities I agree with you.

so im not too worried about the culture

lodi is soft man, quiet town.  Its a good place to be if you need to focus on a goal, which it seems you will be doing.
It is unbelievably racist though for a cali town.

I agree with who said downtown Oakland area can be that city that isn't necessarily tourist friendly but can be a cool spot to live if you don't have a family. If you can't stand the SF weather, Oakland is that much better and apartments are way bigger for your buck as well. SF is great but your living can depend on your income. I would rather live in Oakland instead of the Sunset and/or Daily City.......but that is just me.

The TL isn't as bad as it seems. Mind you there are parts that totally suck but there are a ton of restaurants in the TL that I wouldn't disregard just cause of a bunch of bums here and there. The only place in SF I would never go to is Hunters Point.

I only go to Stockton for the Mexican restaurant on the waterfront..

that's it

Im right next door, in Tracy, and its not even 1/3 as bad..

Cali can get pretty racist. There are parts deep in the OC that are pretty bad. They won't necessarily call you a ni..gg. er but they won't hire you/they won't lease an apt to you/cops will harass you

I am half spanish/half iranian but I look white so I should be fine

I'll take the snobby racists down south over the methed out skin head racists we got in certain deep recesses of Norcal.

Anything east of Livermore is a no go for me.

Iranian? Does it show?
