Yes, it' a genetic abnormality but not all that rare really. The mutation is located on the q arm of chromosome 2 (bands 31/32). It's calledBrachydactyly type D. It's the most normal looking of the Brachydactyly family though since it's just the thumb although sometimes it can be both butthat's more unusual
