Artists don't really get paid, per se, by the record labels. At least, in the fashion that most people think.

When an artist signs a record label deal, they'll typically get what's known as an "advance." This isn't money that goes directly into the artists' pocket. Rather, this is money that the label gives to the artist to compose their first album with. The artist pays for everything, from their entourage, producers, and studio time to their living expenses and advertisement (to some extent, the label helps too depending on the popularity of the artist.) Once the album is completed and the label accepts it, it's put on shelves, in iTunes, and etc. The artist doesn't actually make any money on sales until the advance that is given to them by the label is paid back in full. And you have to sell a lot for that to happen. A lot. Many artists make a good portion of their money on the road, doing tours and making appearances at bars, clubs, etc since they can usually pocket a nice sum of money (20k a night, and that's probably below average.)

Record labels I'm not too sure about. I would assume a majority of their profit comes from record sales, providing artists with studios, selling samples of the masters that they own, and charging for distribution/marketing.

No someone posted a link showing a sample breakdown of how money brought in from music thru pandora, YouTube, cd sales etc was split between the artist, song writer and record label
