Which rappers didn't live up to their hype? Vol. Rap game Thabeet

I really thought X was going to really blow

From his associations with the Liks and King Tee, to getting Tupac's attention...plus he was lyrical

Loved this

40 Days & 40 Nights was my ****

He got with Dre, and I thought it was going to be some Doggystyle/2001 classic type ****. He sold, but the music wasn't as good and it killed his career once he left Dre. Now he's sort of forgotten about, and I always thought he was one of the best on the west.

^Same here about Xzibit. Restless was my favorite album from him. At The Speed of Life was dope, never heard 40 Days/40 Nights, and Man vs Machine was alright. Weapon of Mass Destruction was a mess, Full Circle was pretty good, and Napalm was surprisingly dope. Bought that on a whim and was very pleased.

Are you serious? You must not realize Quik was going platinum his first three albums. I was buying all of Quik and he was one of my favorite rappers.

His problem was he got with Death Row when they were dissolving(Tupac getting killed, Dre and Snoop leaving and The Dogg Pound playing musical chairs). Plus "gangsta" rap had sort of run it's course when people realized you could really die.

That first Quik joint was classic to me, and the clarity, use of instruments and production on Way 2 Fonky was dope.

I stuck with him for Rhythm-al-ism, and then with Balance & Options, but Under The Influence

Dollarz & Sense is one of the best, and most slept on diss songs.

Both of them had some pretty good diss songs back and forth, but that was the knockout punch.
Three platinum album is impressive but that was like fifteen+ years ago, dude is still putting out quality music and relative to his longevity I don't think he gets enough props.  Just my thoughts.

I thought he began to get dated in the 21st century, and there was way too much Sugafree, AMG and other mediocre/bad rappers. He needed to find his Snoop or Kurupt to really continue things as a producer.

No one remembers Drag-on? :rollin

Dude was next up after X.

Bruh, that song he had with case was one of the realest tracks ever. "And why yall call it the projects are we an experiment?" :x:smokin:{

Thought drag was definitely up next, dude ripped "Down Bottom" too.

That Xzibit "What You See Is What You Get" video is one of the best hip hip videos of all time. I think X just got lost in the shuffle with that whole crew. Em, Dre, Snoop then 50 came through. He's doing pretty good for himself outside of rap though.

edit: Ah man Peep dug in the archives for that DJ Quik diss. Ain't heard that in a while. :lol :hat

How you ain't never listen to 40 days and 40 nights and you're an Xzibit fan though? :{

I had hopes for Black John McClain too. The industry. *sighs :{

Dre was impressed by homie too. I remember him saying Xzibit was all business in the studio. Now this dude is dropping...

"Respirate, motivate, masturbate, initiate, activate..."

I heard that garbage and busted out laughing. :eek :x :rollin

Some of you are confusing "Not living up to the hype" and "not sustaining hype"...

Some people mentioned (3Stacks, Game, G-Unit, T-Pain) all had hype, and well exceeded it. But hype and buzz dies for everyone. You arent going to be on top and in the spotlight forever.

But don't act like they weren't ever there, and didn't exceed expectations... Or that they didn't live up to their hype. A lot of you are playing "my least favorite rapper" or "Who's not hot anymore". Bringing up Rappers that haven't had an album in years, talking about some "50 Cent didn't live up to the hype" When he is one of the biggest names ever in rap :lol

People love to forget, and play slave of the moment. Like ASAP Rocky and Drake have half the buzz 50 had....Right...

He's always had quality stuff, but nothing has come close to his first 2 albums, and his 2002 album with Chamillionaire

Damn :{ I truly thought Stat Quo was next. That single he had (forgot the name, but it was on Midnight Club DUB Edition) was perfect, and it was pretty much down hill after that. He basically addressed his entire Shady/Aftermath situation with these two songs. Both are :hat :hat

I still check his stuff out here and there, but he hasn't released much new stuff. Him and Bobby Creekwater were supposed to release an album together, but other than these 4 songs, I haven't heard a mention

Addressing the first bolded part first- You're somewhat correct my friend. Quik DID NOT go platinum with his first three albums. Quik Is The Name is his only album that reached platinum during it's initial life cycle. Way 2 Fonky and Safe + Sound were certified gold during their initial cycles. The latter two are not even certified platinum by RIAA.

Addressing the second bolded/italicized part now- Your second paragraph is mixed up quite a bit. Quik did not get with Death Row when they were dissolving. Quik was with Death Row (associated) with them in 1995 and they were really thriving. 2pac was not there yet. 2pac got to Death Row in 1996 and he died in 1997. Snoop didn't leave Death Row until 1997. The Dogg Pound "musical chair" thing didn't happen until

1999 I believe. Quik was really affiliated with Death Row for two years 1995/96. That era was not when Death Row was dissolving.

John Forté
produced some of The Fugees "the score"

wyclef hyped him Heavy

then he got locked up 10+

came in like kanye producer/rapper & went out like boosie over a suitcase full of coke
