Right, but Griffey transcended his sport. He was the definition of cool beyond Jordan. And even to a certain extent he was more. His laid back attitude captured sports fans in a different way. If he played in a big time baseball market, this thread would have a lot of different answers. The fact he's so revered as an athlete and icon while stuck in Seattle for ten years says a lot.

Edmonton isn't exactly a thriving eclectic metropolis.

It's Griffey. He was on EVERYTHING and he played in %##%+%* Seattle of all places. Every kid wanted to be him.

Someone should make a spin off thread for 2000-2010

Who would be in the discussion there? Kobe? Tom Brady? LeBron? Manning?

Stop it. As strong of a hockey market as it is, it's barely a blip in terms of continental scale and attention in sports overall.

There is only one correct answer, Barry Bonds.

Gretzky may have been the biggest superstar WITHIN his own sport. But other than Jordan the biggest superstar has to be Deion Sanders. I didn't even watch football and knew damn well who he was. Ken Griffey is up there too and Bo jackson, but I don't think they touching Primetime

Tiger Woods.

I'm going w/ Rice and Deion.

Reading the title, before clicking the thread and reading responses, those were the first 2 names I thought of.

Barry Sanders should be up there, he didn't have that superstar mentality, but he was definitely a superstar with the way he played

You think the prime of Bonds career was between 00-10?

I would say Tiger, Manning, and Kobe were all bigger superstars.

Fool, where did Gretzky play in the 90's? c'mon shun.

I forgot about Tiger. Him and Bonds are the top for 2001-2010 imo. Bonds won four straight MVPs (should have been five) and quite possibly broke the biggest record in sports. Add that to the steroid allegations, he was a mega star. Tiger wins the decade off of skill, but there's more to being a star than that. Bonds hasn't played since 2007 and he's still making the news.

Just based on skill, we could bring Jimmie Johnson into this, but nobody knows who he is.
