Why aren't convicts being used in the US military?

QFT... You really think they didn't come up with this idea already?

Why is it so hard for y'all to understand that the idea that OP presented in his original post is already a reality? Face it, there are cases where convicted criminals (even some felons) are allowed in the military. I have seen it with my own eyes. Whether it is a good idea or not varies depending on who you talk to.

The complete idiot and ****** is you. This has already been done and still happens, though the frequency varies according to how badly the military needs people.

You type in a big red font for attention, though. You are far from credible. I dont respect you or your opinion. These criminals dont deserve the prestige and honor perks that comes with being a Soldier. I dont give a flying *$%* if its been done before. Its not right. Period

Technically they would. See the way it's SUPPOSED to work (it doesn't work
smh.gif
) is that once you serve time for your crime, your punishment is up and you can rejoin civilization. If a criminal does a standard military term, which ends his sentence, why doesn't he deserve a second chance? the benefits and health care are only fair. how the +%*! you gon send a man to risk his health in a war, but not patch him up when he gets back? It's really not fair that inmates get looked down upon like "3/5 of a man". the prison system groups non-violent offenders with the worst of the worst. The effect? Cats like you just naturally assume cuz a man is in stripes that he's the worst kind of person, when in reality most of us have broken a law or two anyway. I sold a lil weed. The next guy runs red lights everyday. Some dude on this board probably steals from his job. There's a whole music forum FULL of free-walking felons RIGHT now... just IM anybody about a free album and they'll hook you up. Had we have been caught the times we did what we did, we'd be criminals too. But because we're free, there's no stigma attached to us. We all think we're somehow better than people we don't even know personally, just because they got caught and we didn't. But when the fashion cops arrest you for them jean jackets, you'll understand

Has nobody in here seen Blood In Blood Out?
What OP is trying to suggest already happens in the real world.

What Im wondering is are you suggesting this gets done on a larger scale?
If so, I disagree with that....and not because of the potential liability that these inmates may or may not be.

The fact is that right now as things currently stand, there is no draft.
Meaning everyone or mostly everyone that is enlisted in any type of service today is there because they chose to. Their reasons may vary, but the fact remains that this was their choice.
As long as we have enough volunteers that we dont need a draft, then there is no reason to even look to strat a system in which inmates serve their sentence via uniformed services.

Just like anything else once the number of people in the service goes up their perks are bound to go down because there would no longer be a reason for any incentive to give to our volunteers. These people go through enough as it is, no need to try to mess with their bread and butter as long as enough people are volunteering.

Once our president starts talking about a mandatory draft again then we might want to look at this option.

I wasn't aware it was currently being done till folks with the red type put me on. As long as there is no talk of drafts, it's whatever. But the idea I had was more to do with when there is a need for a draft. I'm just saying start at Rikers first. I think we're in agreement on that. But I see no reason why a program couldn't be started now so that if we NEED it, the kinks might be ironed out by then . Nahmean?

Exactly!! It's how we do in my Fraternity.

Anyway no need to try to explain this topic anymore. They obviously can't grasp the concept of why SOME convicted criminals have been accepted and still are accepted into the military today. Then when you try to explain and give examples they still don't get it. Imagine if they knew that there are convicted felons that have become attorneys and some even went on to become judges.
