Flair’s podcast looks to be happening late Friday again, so I’ll toss it into next week’s column. The podcast week in review, brought to you by Bouqs.com (or our Amazon and WWE affiliate links).
VIP Lounge (1/24/16): Independent wrestler Steve Madison (who came up on the Florida indies with MVP) is the guest this week. The crux of the show is MVP’s early days in the business working in Puerto Rico, having run-ins with Randy Savage and the Rock, trying to get into developmental, both men’s time in Japan, and more. It’s the kind of show where Scoot Andrews and the Blackhearts get mentioned. A much better outing than usual, as the talk is all wrestling related and the hosts curb their more annoying tendencies. THUMBS UP
Steve Austin Show #293 (1/26/16): Instead of reviewing the Royal Rumble, Steve talks to Ian Murphy, the current champion of the Broken Skull Challenge. The show starts off with an interesting story of how Murphy fought at the second Dream MMA event in Japan while he’s in college. The rest of the show is his experiences on the show and the techniques he used to win. Even if you care about this sort of thing, you won’t care this much.THUMBS DOWN
The Ross Report #102 (1/26/16): Bryan Alvarez is here to help JR run down the Royal Rumble, in case you hadn’t heard his opinion on the other 3 shows where he talks about the Rumble. He and JR discuss the show in detail, along with the potential path to Wrestlemania and some notes on TNA and Ring of Honor. If you’re a regular listener to F4W audio, you can safely take a pass on this one, but Alvarez always works well with Ross, and JR is as engaging as he gets (minus a weird tangent about Braun Stowman and the territories). <Alverez’s interview starts at 4:18> THUMBS UP
Talk is Jericho #216 (1/27/15): Dave Mustaine of Megadeth returns to the show. He and Jericho talk about the band’s new album, what inspired it, what goes into finding new members for the band, his brand of wine, and some rumor clearing about who almost joined the band and if there will be another Big Four concert. Mustaine is always a decent interview, and I’m always interested in how longtime acts adapt to today’s music industry. Jericho also discusses the Rumble and match with AJ Styles, and takes umbrage with fans who took umbrage over his “welcome to the big league” comment. <Mustaine’s interview starts at 14:49> THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE
MLW Radio #211 (1/27/16): A packed show this week, as Konnan is missing for the first half of the show, so Kazeem Famuyide of Thestashed.com co-hosts with Court. They’re joined by Johnny Mundo and Taya to promote the debut of season 2 of Lucha Underground, although by far the best stuff is Johnny talking about his days in the WWE. But the interview is too short to amount to much, and having 5 people on at once is just overkill. THUMBS DOWN
Bauer & Pollock (1/27/15): B+P start the show with a discussion on the state of Saturday Night Live (legit). They turn their attention to the Royal Rumble, Kevin Owens lobbying to change the booking, AJ Styles, Mauro Ranallo, Daniel Bryan’s future, TNA’s press release, James Storm returning to TNA, and close the show out with a mailbag. It’s a much better show than recent weeks, despite some lame humor attempting to guess storylines for Lucha Underground Season 2. THUMBS UP
Art of Wrestling #286 (1/28/16): Longtime wrestler Kevin Matthews is the guest this week. The main crux of the story is Matthews time in developmental, and how horribly it all went (Bill DeMott hated him), and coming to peace with that. There are also some fun bits about training with Johnny Rodz (sorta) and being an internet loudmouth. I couldn’t pick Matthews out of a lineup, but his story is interesting, especially the one where DeMott apparently tried to reinjure him after he just got back to training. THUMBS UP
Steve Austin – Unleashed #292 (1/28/16): Jerry Only of the Misfits sits down with Steve for part one of a two-parter. The show is basically about his brief time in WCW, how Vampiro brought them in, wrestling Dr. Death, trying to start a union, how WCW broke them up, and more. They also get a bit into his band, including the circumstances behind Glen Danzig’s departure. Enjoyable show, with a heavy emphasis on wrestling talk centering at a time WCW was really falling apart. THUMBS UP
The Jim Cornette Experience #112 (1/28/16): Jim is back to rant, including an unwelcome return to politics. Brian Last returns as Jim’s anger management specialist and presents Jim some new wrestling to watch, including NXT women’s action (which Jim likes a lot) and Lucha Underground (which he does not like AT ALL). There’s also a very nice remembrance of the Mongolian Stomper. A mixed bag. <Last’s interview starts at 23:54>THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE
Talk is Jericho #217 (1/29/16): Jericho talks to Dolph Ziggler and Bubba Ray Dudley about Motley Crue in light of the band’s recent final show. That’s about it. They talk about first impressions of the band, favorite songs, concert experiences, and more. Dolph is a much newer fan and has a different perspective from the other two. It’s not all a lovefest either, as everyone gets critical of the band’s attitude toward their final tour. A very oddball outing, but still enjoyable, and it gives you some insight into all three guys. Just let me know when Braun Strowman and Bo Dallas get together to discuss Winger. THUMBS UP
MSL & Sullivan Show #17 (1/29/16): The usual show, as MSL and Sullivan talk about the Royal Rumble and WWE’s continued problems booking Roman Reigns. Then they review hour 2 of the August 26, 1996 Monday Nitro and wrap it up with a lengthy mailbag session including a question on the Nivek Navillus angle. I really liked the bit about Pat Patterson’s importance to the wrestling world, as well as the minutiae on the Blue Bloods. Still, it might not be a bad idea to maybe have a guest on or do an all mailbag show to break up the rigid format.THUMBS UP

WOOOO[emoji]8482[/emoji] Nation (1/22/15): As noted last week, this is the audio commentary from Ric and Conrad over the 1992 Royal Rumble. As noted, they go for an hour with Ric tossing out tidbits about most of the entrants, with Conrad tossing in some current event headlines. I can’t say you’ll get a lot of insight into the match (it’s just a long battle royal, after all), but it’s a fun addendum to one of the better Rumbles. The only downside is the obtrusive commercials, which I suppose are unavoidable on a show like this. THUMBS UP
