Top 5: ACC Quarterbacks
Top 5: ACC Quarterbacks
Talk about it in The Tribal Council
The off-season is a long and grueling time, especially during the summer months of June and July. We'll start our look at the top five ACC players at each position by looking at the quarterbacks.

Lewis is arguably the best quarterback back in the ACC.
5. Russell Wilson, NC State (Last year= Unranked)

Wilson really improved as the season wore on in 2008, and finished by winning the ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year award. He has dual-threat capabilties, but is very effective working from the pocket. He plays baseball during the spring, but found time to participate in spring practice as well. 2009 will be his second year as the starter, even though he'll likely split some time with impressive redshirt freshman Mike Glennon, and it could be even better than last years.

4. Jacory Harris, Miami (Last year= Unranked)

Harris split time with Robert Marve last year, which hindered his ability to fully develop at quarterback. Now Marve is gone, and the 'Canes are now under the control of Harris. He is extremely effective scrambling, much like a lot of ACC and NCAA quarterbacks now, but will need to develop his passing a little more. Miami was very young last year, playing a boatload of first and second year players. If Harris can develop significantly more, look for the 'Canes to be on the rise again, possibly a year earlier than some expect.

3. Riley Skinner, Wake Forest (Last year= 4th)

Skinner has been at Wake Forest for what seems like a decade, and returns for his senior season in 2009. He was more of a game manager during his first two years, but last year he opened it up within the Demon Deacon offense. Despite his willingness to go down the field and make plays, he struggled to stay healthy and consistent last year which saw his completion percentage drop from 72.4% in 2007 to 63.9% in 2008.

2. Tyrod Taylor, Virginia Tech (Last year= 5th)

Taylor may not have been the most polished quarterback the past two years, but there's no questioning his ability to win football games. He's won two ACC Championships and an Orange Bowl during his time at Virginia Tech, and that came while splitting time with Sean Glennon. Now, the team is his and he's ready to progress into a full fledged playmaker. The Hokies are the frontrunners in the ACC, and if he can win his third ACC title in three years, there's no questioning that he'll be at the top in 2010.

1. Thaddeus Lewis, Duke (Last year= 3rd)

Lewis isn't anywhere near the most successful quarterbacks in the ACC in terms of victories, but he's got arguably the most physical tools of them all. He has a huge arm with the ability to make all the throws and also has the athleticism to make plays in space with his feet. 2009 will be his fourth year under center, which means he'll have a plethora of experience to fall back on. Unfortunately, Lewis doesn't have the best supporting cast, but that continues to improve.

Honorable Mention: Christian Ponder (Florida State), Josh Nesbitt (Georgia Tech), T.J. Yates (North Carolina)

Talk about being a homer.

Top 3 should be some order of Wilson, Lewis and Skinner.

If only Sewell could remain eligible, he coulda cracked the top 5.

No one answered my question from yesterday... Do you guys think Mustain will get any burn this year? I heard Barkley is the truth but I want to see Mitch getsome PT, he's a cool dude (nh).

^Mitch won't get any burn unless there are a rash of injuries @ the QB spot.

Apparently, Petey isn't a fan of the movement either.

How the hell is Russel Willson 5th?

Dude is the best in the league easily...and Tyrod in the top 5 at all is a joke.

OK maybe not but I'm sick of these underachieving bastards. Can we just get 1 superstar on the offensive side

Agreed. I dunno who the hell wrote that article

I would put my rankings like this:

1. Russel Wilson
2. Thad Lewis
3. Naked Gun
4. Christian Ponder
5. Jacory Harris
6. Yates
7. Tyrod (based on last year, but I DO think he will move into the top five by year's end).
8. Nesbitt
9. Willy Korn (mostly because he hasn't gotten any burn yet).
10. Dominique Davis (I think he will surprise some people this year and could be a top 5 ACC QB by the end of the year though)
11. Whoever UVA will have at QB this year
laugh.gif
I thought Verica was pretty good at times, but he fell off at the end of the year. Vic Hall was sick in HS, andlooked good running on us last year, but I dunno if he will be able to pass worth a damn.
12. Whoever MD has at QB this year

Jacory

If RB#13 played at a school where the coaches didnt promise the young guy his share of carries he woulda run for 1500
Dude is Sick.
I hate PC for that
How the $!@$ does this type RB have games where he has single digit carries. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOS

I'll give Stafon the benefit of the doubt and say that he would be as productive as any other RB out there if given the opportunities, but that isn'tenough to warrant "best RB in the conference". IMO, he doesn't have any more pure ability than Best or Blount.

On that note about Johnson's lack of touches, it's funny to me that Washington fans are convinced that therest of the conference should be in worry mode concerning UW's future because Sarkisian is supposedly as legit as they come, meanwhile the entire SCfanbase seemed to be at least partially critical most of the time and almost always unsatisfied with how he ran that offense. Something to think about . .

True story.

Well, Maybe.

McKnight and Gable and co cut into his carries too much.

I wonder how he will be evaluated come draft time.

I hope Blount can do what he needs to do in the weightroom and the classroom,. If so, he's gonna ball out

UPDATED 5.28.09 10:30am

A bond hearing is now scheduled for Godby quarterback AJ Graham.

The hearing is slated for June 8th at 1:30.

Graham's attorney, Clint McLeod intends to argue Graham deserves to be freed to await trial on robbery charges.

UPDATED 5.27.09 7pm

Star quarterback and Mr. Florida, A.J. Graham, must trade his football uniform for a jail jumpsuit as he's arrested for armed robbery.

Graham was arrested Tuesday night and today a judge denied him bond.

The accusations may cost him a full scholarship to Marshall University.

One of Godby High's most famous faces was conspicuously absent from graduation ceremonies Tuesday.

Star quarterback and Mr. Florida AJ Graham was arrested for armed robbery just hours before he was to get his diploma.

"He's really athletic, he's really smart and I didn't expect that to happen to him at all," said classmate Keyonna Coleman.

"I think it's tragic that the young man with a promising future would fall to you know, succumb to committing a crime like that," said parent Douglas Smallwood as he picked up his daugther from school.

Tallahassee police say it all started outside a party at a house on Constitution Circle Friday night.

Three men say a guy in a gray Impala stuck a handgun in their faces and said "give me your money."

After grabbing an empty wallet, arrest records say, the robber fled in that Impala. The men followed it for a while and then called police.
A TPD spokesman says the trail of clues led to Graham.

"People at the party indicated that AJ Graham had been at the party. We then located the vehicle and through the drivers license photos developed a photo line-up. AJ was picked out of a photo line-up by 2 of the 3 victims," said TPD Spokesman David McCranie.

Graham was bound for a full scholarship at Marshall and Thundering Herd fans had high hopes for the strong armed quarterback.

News of Graham's arrest has already cost him his scholarship.

"I think it was a rush to judgement," Graham's attorney Clint McLeod said.

McLeod says Graham didn't do it. He claims the case is full of holes and wonders if the so-called robbery victims had ulterior motives.

"All his dreams and hopes were just right there within his reach. And all of a sudden some people make an allegation and he's thrown under the bus, but not this time. I just don't think he's guilty of this incident and were going to pursue this case until we find out the truth," McLeod said.

Graham's attorney says he is already trying to set a bond hearing and will vigorously fight the charges.

We tried to speak with one of the robbery victims, but got an abrupt no comment.

Marshall's head coach released Graham from his scholarship, but the sports information director says it could be reinstated if charges are dropped or Graham is found innocent.

FLORENCE - North Alabama's depth at quarterback has taken a major hit with Genario McNealy being declared academically ineligible for the 2009 season.

UNA quarterback genario McNealy passes during their first practice. McNealy was backup to A.J. Milwee last year and is first in line for the position this spring.

McNealy, a senior, served as A.J. Milwee's backup last season and was the No. 1 quarterback in spring practice. He was expected to compete for the starting job with North Carolina State transfer Harrison Beck this fall.

"Genario showed a lot of talent and good leadership in the spring," coach Terry Bowden said. "It's disappointing, and it makes finding another quarterback for the fall a big priority for us."

McNealy completed 33 of 52 passes in 2008 for 401 yards and four touchdowns, mainly in mop-up duty for Milwee. McNealy, who led Mississippi Gulf Coast to the junior college national championship in 2007, struggled in the Lions' spring game, but responded with a strong final spring scrimmage.

Beck, who played one year at Nebraska and two years at N.C. State, will be the favorite to win the starting job this fall. Junior Joseph Anderson was the No. 2 quarterback coming out of spring practice, while junior Ret Tolleson has played sparingly in the past two years.

The Lions signed three high school quarterbacks in February, including Hoover's Simon Propst.

Bowden said he would like to add another transfer with two or three years of eligibility remaining for the fall.

"Beck will be a senior, so we would like to get a guy that can bridge that gap between him and the freshmen quarterbacks," Bowden said.

Meanwhile, the Lions have added several more transfers for the upcoming season. With only one starter returning offensively, Bowden said it was imperative that UNA bring in some playmakers.

"It has been a continual process of trying to meet our needs instead of rebuilding," Bowden said. "This is a unique situation because we want to compete for the national championship, but we lost so many seniors. During spring practice I was able to see our immediate needs. Signing these transfers is simply addressing those needs."

UNA has signed three running backs, including a pair of Florida State transfers.

Brandon Paul is a 5-foot-10, 175-pound back from Tallahassee, Fla., who signed with Florida State in 2007. He redshirted at FSU in 2007 and played in just one game in 2008.

Also transferring from Florida State is Jamaal Edwards, a 6-foot, 210-pound tailback. Edwards was one of the South's top recruits in 2004 after rushing for more than 4,300 yards in his final two seasons at Dudley High School in Greensboro, N.C. He was hampered by injuries at FSU and had just 43 carries for 102 yards in three seasons.

The Lions also signed Anthony White from Yuba Junior college in Marysville, Calif. White rushed for more than 1,300 yards last season and scored 16 touchdowns.

UNA added another playmaker in wide receiver Steve Tirogene, from El Camino (Calif.) College. Tirogene (6-3, 195) had 58 catches for 1050 yards and 11 TDs as a freshman.

One wide receiver rumored to be coming to UNA is Preston Parker, who was dismissed from Florida State after being arrested three times. Parker led FSU with 62 receptions for 791 yards and three touchdowns in 2007. He had 40 catches for 372 yards and two touchdowns as a junior last season.

Parker, however, has yet to sign with UNA. Bowden said he could not discuss players that have not signed with the Lions.

UNA has added a pair of H-backs, that could be used at tight end or wide receiver. Greg McClendon is a 6-2, 225-pound transfer from Illinois and Kenton Thornton is a 6-4, 230-pound transfer from North Carolina.

Thornton's brother, Kyle Thornton, is also coming to UNA. Kyle Thornton (6-3, 340) is an offensive tackle who played two years at Texas.

Other offensive line transfers include Will Furlong (6-5, 275), a former starter at Florida State; Kyle Futch (6-3, 275) another former Florida State player and Chris Smith (6-5, 335), a Gadsden native who played last year at Alabama A&M.

Defensively, the Lions have added three defensive backs in West Virginia transfer Quinton Andrews, North Carolina transfer Richie Rich, and Yuba's Deivon Tate.

Andrews was a three-year starter at West Virginia, while Rich was a three-year letterman for the Tar Heels. Tate intercepted eight passes, including two he returned for touchdowns last season at Yuba.

UNA is also expected to add defensive end Thor Merrow, from West Virginia. Merrow (6-1, 250) is the son of former Atlanta Falcons defensive lineman Jeff Merrow. He saw limited playing time in his three seasons at West Virginia, recording two tackles last season.

Bowden expects most of the transfers to arrive in early July to begin working out together. He said there could be two or three more names added before the start of fall practice.

"We would still like to add a great pass-rusher at defensive end and possibly another safety," Bowden said. "Adding those players, plus a quarterback to replace Genario are the main things we are still looking at.

"It will be an interesting fall with so many new players. We feel like we have a good nucleus of players, but we needed to create competition at certain positions. The key to our team will be creating good team chemistry in such a short time."

MY _ MIAMI!!!!!!!! Do work Tate.

Recruiting: Star system has flaws, coach says

USC DEFENSIVE LINE coach Brad Lawing has recruited hundreds of players over his more than 20 years as a college coach. He has signed players rated highly by the recruiting analysts and players whom the analysts ignored.

In Lawing's opinion, the rating of players and the ranking of signing classes is a scam.

"I can take a three-star and make him a four-star, and I can take a four-star and make him a three- or two-star with the contacts I have," Lawing said. "That's how ridiculous recruiting on the Internet is. I took Chris Culliver (USC safety) from a three- to a five-star in three weeks. All you've got to do is talk to the right people."

Lawing added that a danger of the rating systems is the fans are sometimes misled about the talent level of a prospect and a class overall.

"There are a lot of staffs getting fired for unrealistic expectations," Lawing said.

Nobody else caught this?

Stef doesn't have the breakaway speed of Best or power of Blount, but he has FAR better vision than both of those RBs. Not saying he'sthe best, but he deserves to be mentioned in the top 3 in Pac-10.

Yeah, when I say he doesn't have any more ability than those 2 that's not to say that he isn't just as talented, just that he isn't soclearly on another level in terms of ability that you should be calling him the best RB even though he doesn't have the production to prove it yet.
