Georgia Tech backup quarterback Jaybo Shaw, who played in seven games and started one last year, broke his collarbone during a scrimmage Saturday morning, the school announced.

"It's really unfortunate," coach Paul Johnson said in a statement. "Jaybo was playing really well and was having a good camp."

Shaw could miss six to eight weeks, but Johnson also said he might redshirt Shaw this season.

There are still three other scholarship quarterbacks on the roster -- redshirt freshman Tevin Washington, and true freshmen Jordan Luallen and David Sims. Luallen has not practiced since Aug. 8 because of an ankle injury.

Shaw, who had a touchdown run earlier in the scrimmage, was injured on what appeared to be a routine pass completion. After being knocked to the ground, Shaw injured the collarbone when a teammate fell on him.

Shaw likely would have seen playing time again this year, as he gained valuable experience at the expense of injured starter Josh Nesbitt, who missed two full games and parts of others last year because of hamstring and ankle injuries.

Shaw played almost the entire game in a 38-7 win over Mississippi State, and led the Jackets to a 27-0 win over Duke the following week. He completed 9-of-14 passes for 230 yards against the Blue Devils.

Shaw finished his rookie season with a completion percentage of 62.5 percent and a pass efficiency rating of 194.02. He also ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns.

Shaw recently had been cleared to participate in full contact drills after being held out for a few days because of a concussion. He returned on Thursday wearing a new helmet with a chin strap, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. It was the second concussion he had suffered at Georgia Tech, the first coming during last year's Duke game.

Despite his injuries, Shaw is a hard-nosed runner who isn't afraid of contact, and he rushed for three touchdowns in the April 18 spring game.

Tough break for GT. If Nesbitt gets injured they could be in some trouble.

Wow that sucks. They're in the same spot we are then, as far as if the starter goes down you're in trouble.

Notes from our first scrimmage today. I wish I coulda been there but this is secondhand info:

Ryan Williams looks like the best option at RB. Apparently he outshined the other two today, and also had a 82 yd punt return for TD. If the coaches have anysense, he will get starter carries.

Tyrod threw two picks against the 2nd team defense. Real encouraging. Again I didn't watch so I don't know the circumstances of the picks or how wellhe did otherwise.

Logan Thomas apparently looked really really good at QB today. Threw a few really nice deep balls, a couple TD's. Lots of people said he looks like the QBof the future for us, so I guess trying him there wasn't a bad idea like I thought it was.

While Miami leads, the Buckeyes have a good shot with Payne.

This is the first I am hearing/reading of this. I have never heard OSU mentioned w/ KP

OSU insiders are saying KP is having fun with the recruiting game. He does not hold an OSU offer and will end up at Miami.

Bad news for the Buckeyes...Justin Boren sprained his MCL and is out a few weeks. I read that it's a 50/50 chance he plays against Navy...but should beback for the USC game.

Duron Carter continues to impress. Just likes his pops...great hands...polished routes...and has surprised with his YAC ability.

Another freshman who has impressed is RB Jordan Hall. He's only 5'8", but came in much stronger than expected. Many thought he was offered onlydue to the fact that he was TP's high school teammate...but he is supposedly "embarrasing people in practice". Not so sure he redshirts thisyear...
Breakdown: UF doing great instate
There's no arguing the fact that in the time they have been at Florida, Urban Meyer and his coaching have proven to be some of the top recruiters in the nation. If you need proof, look no further than the Rivals.com Team Recruiting Rankings over that time span. Beginning with their second recruiting class in 2006, the staff attained a top three ranking for three straight years before falling back to 11th this past recruiting cycle due mostly to having a limited number of scholarships available.

Urban Meyer's Gators are off to a fast start along the recruiting trail

Coming off of their second national championship in the past three years, it should come as no surprise that the Gators are once again near the top of the Rivals.com Team Recruiting Rankings. What might be considered surprising is how they are doing it.

Over the last two recruiting cycles the Gators have leaned heavily on out-of-state prospects. This year, the opposite is occurring as 10 of 16 commitments play their prep football in the Sunshine State.

Not only are the Gators staying instate more often this recruiting cycle, according to the Rivals.com Florida 100, they are doing so with amazing results.

As it stands today, only five of the top ten prospects instate have made a public commitment, with the Gators having received pledges from four of the five.

In their previous five classes, the most top 10 instate prospects this staff has signed was the five they inked in the class of 2007, which also just happens to be the last time the Gators reeled in the No. 1 rated class overall. When, as expected, Tampa (Fla.) Catholic lineman Chaz Green goes public for UF, they will have matched that number. Plus there's still several very real possibilities remaining not only in the top 10, but throughout the top 100.

Today, GatorBait.net breaks down the instate recruiting.

QUESTION & ANSWER

GatorBait.net asked FlaVarsity.com Publisher Michael Langston for his opinion on the Gators' hot start instate.

Q: First, what do you think of how Florida has done as far as getting commitments from players in the new Rivals Florida 100?

A: Anytime you are coming off a National Championship you want to take advantage of that on the recruiting front and Florida certainly has done that.

Especially from the state of Florida where the Gators have already landed top prospects like Leon Orr, Jonathon Dowling, Ian Silberman, Jaylan Watkins, and Matt Elam - all Rivals 100 prospects. What Florida has done throughout the process was get a very strong wave of early momentum with the commitment of Elam, which seemed to really set off their run of early commitments.

In addition, the Florida Gator staff did a very good job at early evaluations on players such as Leon Orr, who I absolutely love and he could be the most athletic lineman in Florida this year, and Demar Dorsey.

Anytime you land early commitments like this talented group it sets the tone on what direction your class is going as a whole. Not only that, but when you factor in how strong the South Florida area is this year along with the fact that the Gators already have one of the top players in the country from that area in Elam, it's going to have a positive effect on other prospects that want to join the party.

IMO this is probably the strongest I've seen Florida come out of the starting gate before the season starts.

Fantastic start for head coach Urban Meyer and his staff.

Q: Why do you think that UF has done as well as they have?

It's really a number of things to be honest. First off, for kids that play on the offensive side of the ball the Florida offense is very exciting and one all the kids I speak with want to be apart of, especially the wide receivers because of how they are utilized in the Gator offense.

You also have to give Florida assistant coach Charlie Strong a lot of credit as well in bringing in some serious talent on the defensive side of the ball.

Coach Strong is a very personable coach that kids respond to very well so I think that's an area that gets overlooked sometimes because of what Florida brings in offensively.

Then obviously there's the National Title factor. I mean lets face it Florida has been one of the most consistent programs across the country the past five to six years and kids across the state of Florida know that. So the attraction to play for the best is certainly an advantage for Florida.

The fact that both FSU and Miami are trying to rebuild their programs, while Florida is clearly the elite program in the state of Florida also plays a huge role as well.

The truth is it used to be both Miami and FSU choosing between the best of the best in the 90's and a little after that. Now Florida is alone in that regard. Both FSU and Miami will get theirs as far as talent goes, but it looks like UF is the top choice overall now.

Finally, you also have to give the staff for the Gators a lot of credit. They've done an incredible job at not only targeting the type of prospects that fit their program but putting in the work in the off-season with spring evaluations, summer camps, and elite camps such as Friday Night Lights, which helps them stay ahead of the game.

It's easy to get lazy and just accept you are the best but Coach Meyer and his staff know that to stay up front you have to continue to outwork or match the other programs statewide and Florida has certainly delivered with high marks in that area.

Q: Who are some of the other instate players you think UF has a chance at signing?

A: The Gators still have plenty of targets in the Top 50 there's no question about that. I think starting at the top the most logical pick would be Pahokee WR Chris Dunkley who most believe the Florida is in excellent shape, and I concur with that opinion.

Obviously Florida would love to probably finish off their class with Tampa Catholic athlete Christian Green. The Gators have certainly done everything you can do to make Green feel at home and it's amazing how close of a battle this is with FSU considering the amount of connections the Seminoles have working in their favor. Although I do expect Green to eventually pick FSU when everything is all said and done it gives you a strong idea how well they have done in his recruitment.

Obviously Florida has a great shot at Chaz Green and I actually expect that commitment to be more of a when instead of a who - with the Gators being the team to beat. Florida also has a very good shot at St. Thomas Aquinas cornerback Cody Riggs, who just a few weeks ago named UF the leader.

You also can't forget Treasure Coast linebacker Jeff Luc, who has had the Gators very high on his from the very start. In addition, Luc spent a great deal of time with Strong, and the two have hit it off very well. This one won't be decided for a while though with so many schools involved. Luc goes back and forth about who he likes the most on a weekly basis so we won't really know anything until the official visits start.

You certainly have to put Florida in the mix for offensive lineman Brandon Linder, also from St. Thomas Aquinas. Linder has taken a few unofficial visits there so the Gators are strongly in the mix there. Look out for Florida in regards to Keion Payne as well as Florida made a strong impression on him at FNL.

It's very scary when you consider how Florida could close out this class. This is only a proposition but Florida could possibly land 8 out of the top 10 players on that list, excluding Brent Benedict who is a firm verbal to UGA and Lamarcus Joyner who most feel will pick between FSU and Ohio State. That gives you an idea about how special this class could be for the Gators. http://florida.rivals.com/barrier_noentry.asp?sid=882&script=content.asp&cid=976107&fid=&tid=&mid=

Dontae Williams will supposedly announce his commitment to Oregon within the next couple of weeks. That kid will do some serious work in that Oregon offense ifhe qualifies.

ESPNU150 cornerback Cody Riggs (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Saint Thomas Aquinas recently narrowed his recruitment down to a list of five schools and currently has one program in the lead for his services. Find out where Florida State stands!

"I have narrowed everything down to my final five, which is Florida, Georgia, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Florida State," Riggs said.

The four-star prospect talked about the schools he has visited during the summer.

"I went to Florida and hung out with the coaches and then I went to Georgia and worked out for them and talked with (Bulldogs head coach) Mark Richt. Then, I went to Seminole Showtime and talked with all of the coaches there."

Riggs talked about his interest in the Noles.

"It's just the history that they have there at Florida State," he said. "The defensive backs that they have put in the NFL are also a big factor, plus it was my favorite school growing up."

The 5-foot-8, 160-pound Riggs was timed as fast as 4.3 seconds in the 40-yard dash during his camp tour this past summer.

Riggs planned to attend Florida State's season opener on Labor Day evening against Miami (Fla.) in Tallahassee, but says that those plans have fallen through and he will take an official visit later in the process.

Despite his high interest in the Noles, Riggs' has another team on top for his services.

"I would say Florida is my leader right now because I've been there more recent so I have a better feeling for Florida," he said. "I also went there twice this summer."

Riggs is ranked as the nation's No. 76 overall prospect and is the No. 8 cornerback according to ESPN.com.

On the Sharrif Floyd situation...

Jason told me I didn't need to, but I want to apologize to you guys as fans and the coaches as I know they read this.

I will have an interview up today with Sharrif talking and apparently my source got the school wrong. Sharrif wouldn't tell me who it was, but it did happen and wasn't Florida.

In fact, all he had were great things to say about the program.

Again, my apologies. I won't be coming back here to respond to this thread, but if you feel you need to PM me that's fine.

The interview with Sharrif will be up today. Looks like Florida and South Carolina lead.

Pretty much what we thought. Wonder who it was.

And Seantral named his officials, USC, OU, tOSU, ND, UF. He'll be seeing USC 3 times. I'd be shocked if he didn't end up there.

^
PSU has been his leader for the longest time, then all of a sudden he drops PSU for off the field issues. "Sources" put in an article said it wasUrban bringing up all the arrests and PSU fans start talking +**%. Sharrif says that it wasn't UF and he doesn't want to say who it was.

The only reason this wasn't used against UF was that we weren't seen as a major player, things changed when he visited for FNL.

If anyone just thought for a second, why would UF talk about arrests records vs any other school? Easy to tell it wasn't true.

Ya, true.

So are you worried that he will drop y'all for the same reason?

I take whatever ESPN says in recruiting and throw it in the garbage. My 18 month old nephew knows more about recruiting than those tools. Plus, it was hisfather that named them and not Trel. Nothing against you King, but they are not insiders over there and would be shocked if he has settled on 5 officials andND being one of them. I have heard from their soures that they are out of it for him.

Yeah I should have said his father, my bad. ESPN isn't great but it can't be that hard to quote. Regarding ND, they may be "out of it" buthe hasn't talked to Urban for over a year and UF still will get an offiicial. He already has a feel for Michigan, and Minny but I'll wait to see.

And dre, I honestly don't know but I think it won't be a problem. I'll take our chances against anyone for Floyd.

The main problem with ESPN is that they have never spoken to Trel and only talk to his old man. They aren't that close from what I hear and Trel has saidthing much different than what his dad has on many occasions. Just seems funny to me that they can never get a real interview from him.

I think he is SoCal bound though. Kid knows he is the goods and wants to play for a primetime school and get a definite look at the L.
