Darchinyan fighting this Saturday (australian time)... against my boy Federico Catubay :pimp:

FORMER world flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan is planning a textbook comeback on Saturday in his title fight against an opponent who has been told the Australian is an easybeat.

Darchinyan (28-1, 22 KOs) will fight Filipino Federico Catubay at the Auburn RSL for the vacant IBO super-flyweight world title. It will be the 31-year-old's first fight since he lost his IBF and IBO flyweight world titles to another Filipino, Nonito Donaire, in July.

Darchinyan has revealed his plan to eliminate all the mistakes he made in his impetuous loss to Donaire and produce a more focused and patient performance.

Catubay (20-13, 11 KOs) may have a modest record but he has already defeated one former world champion in Yo-Sam Choi, the ex-WBC light-flyweight champion. Catubay's manager, Samson Gello-ani, revealed he had received insider tips from Donaire on how to beat Darchinyan when they met in Las Vegas last week in the lead-up to the fight between Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao and Mexican great Marco Antonio Barrera.

"We were together at the same hotel and I was talking to him [Donaire], he gave me tips how to beat Vic," Gello-ani said.

"[Donaire told me,] 'it's easy to beat him'. He told me the secrets of how to beat Vic, and I've relayed them to Federico."

Darchinyan's trainer, Billy Hussein, was unconcerned. "Sammy can get as many tips as he wants but, with respect, Catubay is going to be doing the fighting and Vic is probably the most awkward and heaviest puncher in the division," Hussein said.

Darchinyan can also lay claim to inside information on his opponent, as his long time stablemate, Hussein Hussein, stopped Catubay in three rounds in Sydney two years ago.

"Vic just has to take his time, there's no doubt he's got enough power to knock anybody out," Hussein Hussein said.

He was heartened to hear Darchinyan talk about producing a more patient performance this weekend after his shock stoppage by Donaire.

"I want to show the world Vic Darchinyan is back and more powerful and more focused," Darchinyan said. "He's talking about retiring me - I don't want to retire, maybe after seven or 10 more years. I'm focused on not making mistakes. My focus is to take more time and slow my opponent down round by round."

He said he was still intent on getting a rematch with Donaire, who will make his first title defence against former Darchinyan victim Luis Maldonado in Connecticut on December 1.

Darchinyan said, provided he came through Saturday's fight well, he would like to fight on the December 1 card, which also features Danny Green's challenge to IBO light-heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Alfonso Gomez
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Gomez

Welterweight Alfonso Gomez (18-3-2, 8 KOs), who turned back a stiff challenge from Ben Tackie on Tuesday night, broke his left hand in the second round of a 10-round decision win and will be sidelined eight to 12 weeks, "Contender" promoter Jeff Wald told ESPN.com. "It's broken. It's not sprained or twisted. It's broken," Wald said. "He's going to have surgery. He fought this guy with a busted hand. That's what I call sucking it up." Gomez, the popular first-season "Contender" participant, was fighting for the first time since knocking Arturo Gatti into retirement in July. Wald is hopeful of making a deal with Top Rank's Bob Arum to match Gomez with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in late March, which will give Gomez plenty of time to heal.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp O'Neil Bell
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Bell

Former cruiserweight world champion O'Neil Bell (26-2-1, 24 KOs) has finally surfaced with an interesting idea. Bell, who hasn't fought since losing his title in France in a March rematch with Jean-Marc Mormeck, blew off an ESPN2 fight in August without notifying his promoters at Seminole Warriors Boxing. But in the wake of Sultan Ibragimov retaining his heavyweight belt against Evander Holyfield last week, Bell called Warriors' Leon Margules, who also co-promotes Ibragimov. Bell's idea? "He called and told me he wants to fight Sultan. He said, 'I want to come back at heavyweight and fight him,'" Margules said. "He wants to make money and it's a good idea. I wouldn't mind doing the fight, but [which network] is going to buy it?"

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Jose Luis Castillo
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Castillo

Former two-time lightweight champ Jose Luis Castillo (55-8-1, 47 KOs), who was stopped in the fourth round while challenging world junior welterweight champ Ricky Hatton in June, will continue his career after considering retirement, Mexican promoter Fernando Beltran told ESPN.com. Castillo, best known for his epic 2005 first battle with the late Diego Corrales, will fight in his hometown of Mexicali against Adan Casillas (20-6, 15 KOs) in a 10-rounder at 143 pounds. "The guy needs to make a living," Beltran said. "He wants to continue with his career. He says, 'It was one punch with Hatton, I got knocked out and everyone wants to crucify me. It was a great punch but I want to continue with my career. My last performance didn't go so well and I am done?' Jose doesn't care what everybody says and I feel an obligation to support him."

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Zab Judah
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Judah

Former welterweight champ Zab Judah's second fight in 10 weeks will come at junior middleweight, but promoter Brian Young told ESPN.com that it's a "one-shot deal, he's not moving to junior middleweight." Judah (35-5, 25 KOs), who outpointed Edwin Vazquez Sept. 7 in his first fight since being stopped by Miguel Cotto in the 11th round of an action-packed June welterweight title bout, faces Ryan Davis (20-6-2, 8 KOs) in a 12-rounder. The undercard is loaded with prospects: Lamont and Anthony Peterson and Rayonta Whitfield.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Cory Spinks
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Spinks

Junior middleweight titlist Cory Spinks will next face mandatory challenger Verno Phillips, a former titleholder, after the sides asked for a purse bid to be called off because Spinks promoter Don King and Phillips promoter Artie Pelullo were close to reaching an agreement. Assuming the deal is finalized, Spinks and Phillips could meet Jan. 19 on the Roy Jones-Felix Trinidad HBO PPV undercard.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Travis Simms
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Simms

Former junior middleweight titleholder Travis Simms (25-1, 19 KOs) has been released from his promotional contract, Don King Productions spokesman Alan Hopper told ESPN.com. Simms, 36, lost his belt to Joachim Alcine via unanimous decision on July 7. Simms and King have had previous battles, which led to Simms sitting out for more than two years before returning in January to knock out Jose Antonio Rivera to reclaim his old belt in a dominant performance.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Carlos Baldomir
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Baldomir

Ex-welterweight champ Carlos Baldomir, 36, talked about retiring after losing a lopsided decision to Vernon Forrest for a vacant junior middleweight title on July 28, but the lure of the ring has proved too much for the former feather duster salesman from Argentina. Baldomir (43-11-6, 13 KOs) returns against Luciano Perez (15-6-1, 13 KOs) Nov. 23 (Telefutura) at the Sycuan resort in El Cajon, Calif. Also on the card: junior lightweight Bobby Pacquiao, Manny's brother, faces Fernando Trejo, and junior middleweight Vanes Martirosyan, a 2004 U.S. Olympian, also will appear.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Kassim Ouma
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Ouma

Former junior middleweight titlist Kassim Ouma is returning to the ring nearly a year after he lost a lopsided decision to then-middleweight champ Jermain Taylor last December. Ouma was supposed to fight Sergio Mora at middleweight on Sept. 15, but the card was canceled, so co-promoter Golden Boy has lined up Ouma (25-3-1, 15 KOs), who is going back to junior middleweight, to face Saul Roman (27-4, 24 KOs) at Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon, Calif., on Nov. 2 (Telefutura). "We are proud to present former world champion Kassim Ouma on this card so he can show the junior middleweight division that he is on the road to another world championship," Golden Boy's Oscar De La Hoya said in announcing the fight.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Jason Litzau
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Litzau

Main Events has added two of its top prospects to the Nov. 23 Fernando Vargas-Ricardo Mayorga undercard, although the bouts will not be part of the Showtime PPV. Added to the bill are flyweight Raul Martinez (20-0, 13 KOs), who will face Jose Alberto Rosas (25-3, 22 KOs), and exciting featherweight Jason Litzau (22-1, 19 KOs), who will fight Edel Ruiz (29-17, 20 KOs). Martinez, who has campaigned at bantamweight, is moving down to flyweight.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Kelly Pavlik
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Pavlik

Kelly Pavlik is enjoying the fringe benefits of being the middleweight champion. Tuesday night, Pavlik, of Youngstown, Ohio, was at Jacobs Field in nearby Cleveland to throw out the first pitch of Game 4 of the ALCS between the Indians and Boston Red Sox. Pavlik had a chance to talk boxing and baseball with several members of the Indians.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp

Junior featherweight titlist Celestino Caballero (27-2, 18 KOs), last seen outpointing Jorge Lacierva on Showtime in August, is going home to Panama City, Panama, to make his third title defense against ex-junior flyweight titlist Mauricio Pastrana (34-7-2, 22 KOs) Dec. 1, matchmaker Samson Lewkowicz told ESPN.com. Pastrana, 34, is a little long in the tooth, but is coming off an upset knockout of prospect Antonio Escalante.

Vargas And Mayorga To Fight At 168:

By Matthew Hurley: The Fernando Vargas Ricardo Mayorga fight will now be fought at 168 pounds. The bout which was originally scheduled for September 8th was postponed when Vargas was diagnosed with anemia. Vargas camp contacted Mayorgas camp requesting the weight change and Ricardo agreed. Neither fighter has ever fought above 160 pounds.

The fight, to take place on November 23rd at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, is being billed as Fernandos farewell to boxing. Vargas, 26-4 with 22 KOs is coming off back to back losses to Shane Mosley. His struggles with his weight are notorious and when the fight was initially signed he remarked that after the second loss to Mosley he had ballooned up to nearly two hundred and thirty-five pounds. The fact that he requested an additional eight pound weight allowance doesnt speak well for this so-called farewell to the sport.

Mayorga, 28-6-6 with 23 KOs is coming off a 6th round TKO loss to Oscar De La Hoya. El Matador has become something of a staple for once elite fighters looking for an opponent who will mouth off at press conferences to garner public interest and then stand straight up and walk into punches once the bell rings thereby making his opponent look brilliant. He performed this task well against Felix Trinidad and then De La Hoya and now Vargas hopes he does the same for him.

Mayorga was already playing his villainous role to the hilt at a press conference in July when a few choice remarks led to a brawl on the podium. Vargas took the bait and a fight, really not worthy of pay-per-view, became something of a fun diversion. Suddenly the fight itself became a little more compelling because where Mayorga is easy to hit, Vargas chin is now easy to dent. The fight took on the appeal of a potential street fight with the winner being the one who landed the first big punch.

Now the fight will come the day after Thanksgiving and with many having the day off from work this pay-per-view card will probably sell fairly well. Vargas maintains a loyal fan base and Mayorga presents the perfect foil.

The undercard has yet to be finalized.

I think its better that way. It would just be way too brutal too make them do a 3rd one so soon. Give them some time to heal up and rest so they can give a helluva performance one last time.

DARCHINYAN BACK AS CHAMP, AIMS DONAIRE REMATCH

By Maloney L. Samaco
PhilBoxing.com
Mon, 22 Oct 2007

Vic Darchinyan bolstered his quest for world supremacy by getting his comeback KO over Filipino Federico Catubay in Auburn RSL Club, Auburn (Sydney), New South Wales, Australia. But not before being threatened with the greatest upset of his career by under-rated Filipino fighter.

Nicknamed Magnifico, Catubay knocked Darchinyan off balance in the sixth round with an extensive punch and only the ropes saved Vic from visiting the canvas. A knockdown could have been called but there was none.

The Armenian-born fighter took nearly the full 12 rounds against a very valiant and exasperating adversary. The Raging Bull scored a 12th round TKO with just 57 seconds remaining against the harsh Cebu-based fighter. The bout was for the International Boxing Organization world super-flyweight title.
While the IBO crown doesn't carry the influence or prestige of some of the more established boxing organizations, it will guarantee Darchinyan to remain in the upper echelons of the global boxing scene.

In his first fight in Australia for over two years, 31-year-old Darchinyan carefully picked apart his gutsy but outboxed opponent. "It was a hard fight. He was tough and it's actually good because I can now learn from my mistakes,'' Darchinyan said.

Darchinyan, who improved his record to 29-1 with 23 KOs, dominated the bout, registering knockdowns in the 7th and 11th round. Catubay's record dropped to 20-14 with 11 KOs. The Filipino fighter took enormous punishment in the 12th round and Australian referee Garry Dean stopped the bout with the final round almost ending.

The Raging Bull, who also picked up the IBF Pan Pacific belt, entered the ring rated No. 6 by IBF and No. 3 by IBO computerized listings, while the Filipino is rated a far away No. 31 by IBO.

In a previous visit to Sydney in 2005, Catubay was halted in three rounds by Darchynian's stablemate Hussein Hussein, older brother of trainer Billy, for the OPBF flyweight belt.

Darchinyan's amateur career was 158-18 record with 105 knockouts, all but 20 of them were in Armenia, as he joined Armenian team in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He lost to Bulat Jumadilov of Kazakhstan. Darchinyan moved to Australia after competing in the Olympics, eventually became an Australian citizen and turned pro at the age of 24.

It was Darchinyan's first fight since losing his IBF and IBO world flyweight titles to Filipino Nonito Donaire, Jr. in July and he immediately called out Donaire for a rematch. My promoter wants to promote a rematch between me and Donaire early in the New Year, declared Darchinyan. "That's something my manager will have to work out.''

Darchinyan's passion for knocking out his opponents finally backfired in his bout with Donaire, with the then champion leaving himself exposed to a colossal left hook which ended the fight in the fifth round.

The US-based General Santos City native won the IBF flyweight title with a knockout of the previously undefeated southpaw on July 7, 2007 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. His counter left hook that landed on Darchinyans jaw is an early candidate for knockout of the year and even upset of the year for 2007.

Taylor jumps at opportunity for another shot at PavlikIt's rematch time.

Jermain Taylor, who lost the middleweight championship when Kelly Pavlik knocked him out in the seventh round of their Sept. 29 fight, has exercised his contractual option for an immediate rematch, Taylor promoter Lou DiBella said Tuesday.

DiBella said he was notified of Taylor's decision by adviser Al Haymon on Monday afternoon. DiBella then notified Bob Arum, Pavlik's promoter. Taylor had until Oct. 29 to make a decision.

The rematch probably will happen in mid-to-late February, with the 16th the frontrunner as the date, but it will depend on HBO's schedule. Contractually, the rematch must take place within 150 days of the first fight.

"We notified [Top Rank] and they were fine with it," DiBella said. "It was like, 'Let's get it on, let's work it all out, let's do the details.' "

HBO already has two major fights in the works for the month, a Feb. 2 welterweight unification match between Paul Williams and Kermit Cintron and a probable Feb. 23 heavyweight title defense by Wladimir Klitschko.

The site for the rematch also has not been determined, nor has it been decided if it will be televised on HBO or HBO PPV, DiBella said. Atlantic City, N.J., site of the first bout, is a possible venue. The September bout drew a wild crowd of 10,127 to Boardwalk Hall; thousands made the 6-hour drive from Youngstown, Ohio, Pavlik's hometown, to see what turned out to be a candidate for fight of the year.

One detail that was ironed out when the rematch clause was written was that the fight will be a non-title bout unless the sides agree to tweak the terms. The rematch clause calls for the fight to take place at a maximum weight of 166 pounds, which is six more than the middleweight limit.

"It will be at 166," DiBella said. "That's what both sides seem to acknowledge right now."

DiBella said he wasn't surprised that Taylor opted for the rematch right away instead of a scenario that had been discussed in which both fighters would take interim bouts before forging the rematch.

"Jermain told me four times he wanted the rematch right after the fight," DiBella said. "He told me again that he wanted it when I talked to him a week later. So it's not really a surprise to me. Jermain Taylor is someone who has never run from a challenge."

Pavlik's camp had been exploring an optional fight for Jan. 26 against popular Irishman John Duddy. Cameron Dunkin, Pavlik's manager, said their team is fine with the Taylor rematch instead.

"We're ready to fight Jermain again," Dunkin said Tuesday. "Kelly said from the beginning that he was glad to have the rematch if that's what Taylor wanted to do. He'll give Jermain the opportunity like Jermain gave him the opportunity. That's fine. Kelly told me, 'I'm a fighter. I'm fine either way.' "

Dunkin said when he called Pavlik, his father and co-manager Mike Pavlik, and trainer Jack Loew to tell them about Taylor's decision, they were excited.

"I told them they had exercised the rematch and that Kelly would be fighting Jermain Taylor next," Dunkin said. "He said, 'Great.' We talked about the weight for a minute. I told him I would let him know the particulars about the rest when I found out. I said, 'Are you happy?' He said, 'Absolutely.' Kelly will be even better at the higher weight."

One of the major questions surrounding the rematch will be the state of Taylor's corner. His four-fight pairing with Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward has not gone well and there has been a lot of talk about Taylor making a change. With Steward, Taylor is 2-1-1 -- a controversial draw with Winky Wright, unimpressive decision wins against junior middleweights Kassim Ouma and Cory Spinks, and the knockout loss to Pavlik.

"It's not a decision I make and I am not involved in," DiBella said of the possibility of a change in the corner. "Right now, I have not been told one way or the other what is going on with that."

DiBella said he supports Taylor's decision to take the rematch right away.

"I think Jermain can win," DiBella said. "I think he wants it, he's entitled to it and he can win. It's a fine decision. He's committed to it. It's a hell of a fight and the outcome is in doubt. Their first fight justifies a rematch."

Their first fight indeed was a thriller. Taylor (29-1-1, 17 KOs) scored a second-round knockdown and was on the verge of a stoppage, but Pavlik (32-0, 29 KOs) survived the round. They went toe to toe for much of the fight.

Pavlik, 25, was trailing on all three scorecards in the seventh round when he caught Taylor, 29, of Little Rock, Ark., with several hard punches, including a pair of uppercuts, that dumped Taylor into a heap on the mat and led referee Steve Smoger to immediately call the fight.

For those who are interested the World Boxing Championship is being held here in Chicago. It is a qualifier for the 2008 Olympics.

I'm not sure how large the fields are for each weight class but tonight was lightweights night.

Two rings with two matches going at the same time. 4 rounds for 2 minutes each round.

I was confused cause the scoring was not at all to what I was used to.

Some results

Mexico - lost
US - won
Canada - won
Japan - won

Best match up of the night was Peru vs Nicaroga (sp*)

I might go back for the finals but I can't say this was my kind of boxing.
