Frank Ordoñez / The Post-StandardMarcus Sales (5) catches a pass behind freshman cornerback Jaston George in the Syracuse University spring football game April 16 at the Carrier Dome. Sales caught three passes for 47 yards for the Blue squad.
Syracuse, NY - Marcus Sales, a senior starting wide receiver on the Syracuse University football team, is facing felony drug charges after being arrested Friday night with his brother.
Sales, 21, of 362 Valley Drive, was in a car with his brother, Michael Sales Jr., 25, of the same address, when police stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation near Midland and Ballantyne avenues just before 9:45 p.m.
According to Syracuse police reports, the brothers were taken into custody after drugs and drug paraphernalia were found in their car after the vehicle was stopped for running a red light.
Sales, a Syracuse resident and graduate of Christian Brothers Academy, was expected to be a key contributor to the Orange offense this season after he broke into the SU starting lineup last season. Sales, who wasn’t even on the depth chart at the beginning of the 2010 season, had a breakout game in SU’s 36-34 Pinstripe Bowl victory over Kansas State, with five catches for 172 yards and three touchdowns.
For the season, Sales had 26 receptions in 11 games for 414 yards and four TDs. He was listed as a starting receiver, along with senior Van Chew on SU’s 2011 depth chart released today. Practice for the upcoming season starts Friday.
Frank Ordonez / The Post-StandardSU senior receiver Marcus Sales is listed as a starter on the Orange preseason depth chart.
The arrest leaves Sales’ status for the start of preseason camp in question. He is the second SU player involved in an incident Friday, as backup running back Prince-Tyson Gulley, a sophomore, was stabbed early Friday during a fight in the 300-block of Slocum Avenue on the SU campus. Gulley’s injuries weren’t considered life-threatening, but there’s been no word on his condition or status on the team.
SU head coach Doug Marrone, who is in Rhode Island for Big East football meetings and media day events Monday and Tuesday, could not be reached for comment on Sales’ arrest.
“We are aware of the charges against Marcus Sales,
