2012 Summer Olympics Thread: London July 27 - August 12

The media just likes to sensationalize their topics so its easier for them to make mass generalizations.

Phelps is the greatest pro swimmer of all time, no doubt.

But greatest olympian? What does that even MEAN? You can only win one gold in Table Tennis. You can win several in swimming. Its not even a direct comparison.

But on another note, I think title defenses are far more impressive.

Don't agree with you on many things, But this is on point.

If Phelps ran track, it would be like him winning the 100, 200, 400, every relay and the hurdles. You all do realize that athletes train their entire lives for a single swimming event. They get in the pool 3 times max at the olympics. And every single one of them loses to Phelps.

Michael Phelps is the most dominant athlete of all time. Michael Phelps is the greatest Olympian of all time.

Crazy couple of hours for GB - 3 golds in track and field!

Andy Murray has a rough day tomorrow now - Federer in the final at 2pm GMT then the mixed doubles at 4pm. Going to be tired - at least it's only 3 sets with a tiebreak.

Exactly. :{ at people not realizing how insanely difficult what he has done really is....not even counting all the world championship golds he has

Phelps is beast. No one can deny he is one of the best olympians ever.

Big ups to My Guatemalans who just won their first Silver medal in 20km.

Happy GB is out of soccer tourny. 2 Asian and 2Latins teams left in MSoccer. Hope its South Korea and Brazil (eventhough they were gifted semi win) in final

Isn't South Korea is playing Brazil in the semis? I thought it was Mex/Japan and SK/Brazil

It is Brasil vs SK. It's gonna be good.

If they final is Brasil vs Mexico, that will be really good especially sign Mex beat them in a friendly earlier this summer

Again with the hyperboles Costas Jr.

Phelps is the most dominant SWIMMER of all time.

When dude starts competing in more than one sport, then we'll talk about being the most dominant ATHLETE.

Greatest Olympian? Sure...in swimming.

I haven't been this gassed about British sport since Linford won the 100m back in 92.

That 10k from Mo brought a tear to my eye bruh.

GB owned the day. Congrats to all the champions :hat

I am sick of hearing how many more medals Phelps has than anyone considering there are a million swimming events compared to other sports

Love him or hate him, Phelps is a beast. Heck, probably more than half of NTers here can't even swim, let alone do all the swimming strokes consistently fast. People fail to realize how difficult it is to have to compete in so many swimming events across so many days. There's a reason majority of swimmers (even track athletes) concentrate on a few specialty events instead of training for many.

TL;DR: Ya'll can't swim so you might as well inaccurately sensationalize his accomplishments.

This honestly is just ******ed:

I mean...that celebration alone.

Just nuts.

You're right, because it is even more difficult than that.
Nah, I think winning every track event is tons more difficult. I think would it would be a lot more taxing on the joints, and well no explanation needed after that.

But not to discredit Phelps. He is THE man.

And I said it before, but now ill say this, give him another gold for being the best athlete to interview.
