"People from other teams want to play in St. Louis and they're jealous that we're in St. Louis because the fans are unbelievable. So why would you want to leave a place like St. Louis to go somewhere else and make $3 or $4 more million a year? It's not about the money. I already got my money. It's about winning and that's it. It's about accomplishing my goal and my goal is to try to win.
Albert Pujols in 2009.
Oh Albert. New rule: No longer can a pro athlete in any sport ever utter something is not about the money. In any situation. Thank you.

The Rays have club options covering Moore's third arbitration year and first two free agent years. If those are exercised, the deal could be worth $37.5MM over eight years, and it could exceed $40MM with escaltors.
Beautiful.

Management did exactly what they felt was best for the teams future and at the time they signed Holliday it was because they felt it's what Albert would need to stay in St. Louis for the remainder of his career. Albert wasn't asking for a 10 year contract 2 seasons ago. It's funny how people who don't follow this team on a day to day basis all of a sudden are experts on why talks broke down. I know you keep yourself informed Proshares about what's going on around the league, but there is a lot of info you are unaware of that was happening in St. Louis. Albert's ego has reached Bonds status in the last few season, but the media in St. Louis was very careful to protect him. The Cards could have got this done years ago, but chose not to for reasons unknown to any of us.Originally Posted by Proshares
IDK about that. Have to agree to disagree here. IMO you don't give Holliday 7 years at $18mm a pop and then drag your feet with a Pujols extension. That's essentially what's been happening before last offseason. I don't think it was lip service to the fans. They offered the guy a 5 year deal in November. That's the straw that probably broke his back. I wouldn't call him a liar at all. You offer the guy a 9 year deal over the winter and then after he helps bring you a WS in a year he was injured and came back the same player then offer him a 5 year deal? Especially knowing the market out there? I think they're more to blame here than Albert pulling an A-Rod.

As @JoeStrauss has reported, the #Cardinals reopened Pujols talks with a 5-year offer in November. Albert was not pleased
