2016 Official NBA Off-Season Thread: Former Greatness

Gilbert Arenas ig post is the realest I've read around KD situation

sorry if link has already been posted

If Wade goes to the Bucks that team will be really, really good. Greek Freak and Jabari making jumps, Middleton's shooting, Henson's defense then add Wade? And you got Delladova, Vasquez, Brogdon, MCW, Teletovic and Thon off the bench.

Knicks, Hawks, Pacers and Celtics all have potential as well to beat the Cavs.

Stop it, bucks aint contenders neither are the other teams listed. Knicks are closest on paper but they still arent beating the cavs in the east. Thon maker will be lucky to see the floor this year, he lacks the strength to play on this level right now and his perimeter game is nowhere near Ingram

They have Wade's bird rights, meaning that they can exceed the salary cap when signing him.

This guy on twitter is a cap-enthusiast.

The heat don't have Wade's full bird rights because he signed a 1-year deal. Therefore, they cannot exceed the cap to give him 2 years/50 mil.

He's a beast with the numbers.
Minor Note: It has been reported that the offer to Wade was a flat $20 million for each season. The Heat currently has $18.9 million of cap space. It could increase another $287K if the Heat waives and stretches Briante Weber and to a further $637K if it declines to match the Tyler Johnson offer sheet. That totals to as much as $19.6 million. A flat $20 million offer to Wade, if true, would therefore likely require Hassan Whiteside to make a small sacrifice. This is a small issue, but optically intriguing. Wade surely does not want to take a discount from his $20 million salary from last season, nor does he want to slip into the teens of salary. Whiteside has presumably agreed to help ensure that doesn’t happen.

In all honesty, I hope a third team emerges, a surprise that ppl who can't rock with GS and Cleveland can root for.

the Knicks :)

Not a bad off season for the Knicks. With the exception of Noah every move has been economical and relatively risk free. Traded for Rose's expiring. Overpaid for Noah. Got Lee for a good deal. Got Brandon Jennings for cheap. Got Thomas on a small discount. Picked up Hermangomez without touching their cap (I think) Justin Holiday could be a surprise rotation player and he was a throw in for the Rose trade.

That doesn't make sense.  The guy has been with MIA all his career.  How could they not have his bird rights.

I thought he could also shoot the 3 pretty well? maybe I'm tripping

he can and when he's locked in, he's pretty dope. 1st 2 games of the cleveland series 'Playoff Pope' was nasty af. then he completely disappeared after they adjusted. He struggled to score when the 3s werent falling.

And supposedly Cleveland has Lebron's early bird rights and he's only played there for two seasons since coming back.

I'M CONFRUSED.

In a pace and space NBA where elite teams keep 3-4 shooters in the game at all times...that Bucks lineup isn't scaring anyone.

It can't be correct.  From NBA's website:

"The basic idea is that a player must play for the same team for three seasons for his team to gain Bird rights (two seasons for Early Bird rights). It can be a single three-year contract, a series of three one-year contracts, or any combination that adds up to three seasons (or two for Early Bird)."

"Once Bird rights are established, they don't go away unless the player is renounced or signs with another NBA team. This means teams retain Bird rights to many players who have long since retired, and could still use those Bird rights to re-sign such a player if that player attempts a comeback (but not for a sign-and-trade transaction -- see question number 102  for details)."

"If a team renounces a player (see question number 41), they can't use the Bird exception to re-sign him. However, if that team then re-signs the player by some other means (for example, with cap room), the team reclaims its Bird rights."

The only way I could see them not having his rights if they renounced him last year, but other than that it doesn't make sense.  Plus, why would wade ask for a 25M contract knowing there was no way they could give that to him.

To bad he couldn't do that against the Cavs

Jabari is a good shooter, he just stopped shooting 3's this past season for some reason. Giannis will keep improving his shot and Middleton is a really good shooter. They would be fine.

To be more specific, the Heat waived Wade's Bird Rights to sign Whiteside using the resulting cap space.

That's why as of right now, they can only offer $18.9M.

Normally I hate memes like this... but i did find this one interesting.

I have to admit, it's hard to hate the Warriors. They literally got it out the mud. They drafted each one of their superstars and acquired KD fair and square. You don't have to love them but you have to respect how they've build their team....

The east has had a few potential good teams, we just don't know how they would have performed against the west in the finals because of Bron. It's just statistics. Better chance of making the finals in the west over in the East without Bron. The Spurs haven't stopped the Warriors rise, didn't stop the Thunder either. The Heat stopped the Pacers window cold and the same (plus injury) with the Bulls

I think the west > east statement is exaggerated. What team can actually challenge the cavs? Actually only warriors and spurs after KD left OKC. Neither Clippers nor Portland can be a real threat for the Cavs.
In the East it's mainly Toronto and Miami who could make the cavs work.

My main man Jabari is a career 25% 3 pt shooter. He made his first 3 in March.
