Embiid is really showing the league that he's a near superstar with his start to the season. He's averaging just under 30 ppg, over 12 boards and over 2 blocks a game, and he's doing a lot of it inside and near the rim. I'm super impressed how well he looks this season. Can definitely tell he worked on his game during the summer. Plus he looks more fluid and not awkward when he lands. Super stoked!!!
Everything that was asked of Embiid to improve on this summer he did.
Better Stamina: Check
Lower turnovers: Double check
Better three point: Kind of, but he's taking less
Playing better off the double team: Check
It's good to see him honing in on those issues. He and JJ are the only bright spots for the team so far.
I am quite concerned with the direction of this team to be quite honest. Here's why:
Brett Brown: Stubborn with his rotations and has favorites even when they play like trash, or worse, when the other members play well and yet, he sticks with his rotations. I mentioned before, he's at the same level as Dwayne Casey and Scott Brooks where he's good at development and turning a bad young team into a competitive playoff team, but he's not the type of coach that will take you a level beyond that. You cannot win a chip with him. The problem is that He's been part of the process since the very beginning and has a say on what to do with personnel and he definitely won't fire nor replace himself.
Elton Brand: What has he done so far? Nothing. Absolutely nothing and is hiding behind the excuse of "being patient" with Fultz. I hope he realizes there are other holes in this team outside of Fultz. So far, he seems to be a yes man that does what management thinks is right and what Brett thinks is appropriate. You will NOT win a chip with a visionless GM like this.
Simmons: This guy has regressed this year and was hit hard with the Kardashian curse. He hasn't added anything to his game and defenses know how to contain him now. I hope he sees this regression as motivation to take it up a notch and improve on his weaknesses. I wouldn't even vote him as an all-star this year. I still think he has the potential to be the best player on the team, but until he learns how to shoot, that's a fantasy.
Fultz: We have all been pretty vocal with him, I at least appreciate that he tries, but damn, he's not a high basketball IQ player. I saw him live vs Toronto and when he makes a mistake (like get the ball stripped from him), he really lets it get to him and it affects his confidence pretty hard. There are encouraging games but they are few and far between. If Fultz can indeed become something close to the player he once was (I doubt it), it will take all year and part of next year to reach that. And he DEFINITELY will not reach that alongside Ben. But Brett is too stubborn to switch up the lineups.
He's been relying on natural talent his whole life and you can see he still hasn't learned other parts of the game. When he's out there, he looks like he's playing pickup basketball.
Covington: Again, I saw him live against Toronto and I was actually quite impressed with his performance. I noticed things I don't usually notice watching from TV, but this guy is so active on defense. His hands are always moving and really impacted some turnovers from the raps but it wouldn't show up on the stat sheet.
JJ and Shamet are bright spots.
The most concerning thing with me right now is the direction management is taking, actually, I would even say it's the personnel hired. I don't believe in Brand, Brown is too involved with decisions (Coach/ GM role never works) and I believe Buc Em mentioned this before that if we stay this course, we are Clippers East and an ECF is our ceiling.
