You don’t have to be rich to play hockey.

Sure the gear might be more expensive (skates and a stick) than a soccer ball or basketball, but baseball gear can be just as expensive too. You got some really poor countries where kids pick up baseball. With hockey, in these colder states/countries the gear is just passed down. Plus you can find a frozen lake or even an outdoor rink.

I remember growing up in the hood in Brooklyn with my grandma and they built a hockey rink in the park right near the courts. **** was crazy. It got packed too. one of those non-ice outdoor rinks with rollerblades and bolted in goalie nets.

Lacrosse is by far the richest sport. Not even close.

In Canada you can be middle-low class and play Hockey because it’s more accessible.

I won’t be surprised that if by 2050 half the NBA (maybe more) are children of players.

They’ll have personal trainers at 10 years old.

Not saying it’s a bad or good thing. I don’t really care. It’s Capitalism like dope said last night.

My old barber has his elementary aged kids running laps and doing push-ups for missed shots and puts it all on IG. Jake Shuttlesworth like.

A lot of dudes like that just living vicariously through their children. Kinda sad.

I’d argue it’s a lot more that they have the genetics than they have the trainers. There’s not that many 6’3 to 7’1 extremely coordinated and athletic people out there.

Yeah that’s roller hockey

Ice time is generally tough to get, and expensive. Baltimore City, for example, only has 2 ice rinks I think. And they are both on the east side in more affluent areas.

Kid growing up on the west side might see hockey on tv and think it looks cool, but the chance he’ll be able to get equipment and ice time to practice and whatnot is slim to none.

I feel like if you didn't really have to know if your kid was gonna be super nice at basketball by like 12 now this would happen less.

Of course genetics will be part of it. Absolutely.

But so will the access to everything else.

Nah I agree, hitting the genetic lottery is >>>> access. You can have access to a 24 hour gym, all the trainers, top competition, etc but if you’re 5’9 it’s much harder to reach the league than if you were 6’5.

Even if you’re white. How many 6 foot shooters are out there. They’re all automatic. Then you have someone like Duncan Robinson whos 6’7 or w.e making it. Props to him, not easy, but still.

That genetic pool helps you skip a bunch of steps. You’re automatically noticed too.

The ice time is maaaaad expensive though. Way more than the equipment.

The change from urban to suburban is more interesting to me.

You can basically track the rise of the black middle class in america
through the shift NBA player family origin.

Big urban cities have gone from a place where middle class and working class black people raise families.

To expensive playgrounds for the rich.

You can see it with Canadian prospects
A lot of the early Canadian basketball prospects
We're from Toronto proper.

Now they are a from the exurban cites around Toronto.
London, Hamilton ect

Montreal is relatively more affordable than Toronto so you still see guys from there
like Ben Mathurin

but I imagine that will change also.

Seriously though the access thing IS a major deal in some sports in this country. Just don’t really think it’s basketball or football.

Hockey, soccer, baseball.

Access & exposure to sports like golf or hockey is just as big an issue as the price.

Who knows how good a kid can be at golf if they've never held a club?

But I’m not disagreeing here. I’m just saying….

Genetic Lottery AND Money >

That’s my point.

Part of it is also structural.

In america and now canada
there is a system in place that turns black people into basketball and football players.

if you have talent there are trainers and coaches who will get you the training you need.
there is an entire very profitable system of
AAU, junoir college, college, NBA, player agents that incentivises them to do so.

That system and culture in Canada exists for hockey and just recently started existing for basketball.

Having the right people around you is key too. Keeping you on the right path and making sure you stay motivated. Outside of ignorant neighborhood stuff, kids these days can also easily be on their phone for hours, we didn’t really have that distraction back then.

Because Canada's youth basketball scene exploded so fast you can see how fast the structure and pipeline gets built.

Mike George former canadian college basketball player
wins a game show, uses the money starts an AAU team.

That AAU team eventually produces guys like Wiggins, Anthony Bennett, Tyler Ennis ect
bunch of guys become NBA prospects.

and uses that to become a player agent.

now everyone who hooped or coached basketball in canada sees the path to riches.
so rich or poor if you play basketball in the southern Ontario.

Someone will find you and train you.

Sure money plays a factor into it but I’d be willing to bet if you look at all the D1 college ball players out there more of them come from middle/low income than higher. They have the skills and genetics to do it. The money will get them more exposure to better things of course but that doesn’t always mean they’ll pan out

Height is like the most heritable trait other than like hair/eye colour.

Athletic ability is less heritable than you might think
