2024 MLB Thread; RIP Willie Mays & Pete Rose. Dodgers win #8!

I been saying this for months - I really don't know how pro (or college) sports leagues play this year...honestly.

Unless they have some fool proof plan for getting infected players out and healthy players in. And what do football teams do when the star quarterback comes down with it the night before the big game? Or half a defense? You forfeit? You do a make up date? Who determines whether the game gets played? (does Nick Saban want to play LSU if half his D starters are out?)

MLB is not going to be played in a bubble situation this year, if they play. There are going to be infected players the entire season with them crossing state lines. I mean...

I still think the powers that be will push through and it will take an athlete to become seriously ill before they cancel off seasons and unfortunately I think that's a "risk" they're willing to take on their behalf

COVID gonna be the thing to unite the players union and MLB....into canceling the entire season.

What are you gonna do when an entire pitching staff gets covid before game 4 of the world series? How do you even have a competitive balance when you might have star players testing positive and out for extended parts. Now I get injuries happen...but this is entirely different. Every day I get closer to believing there is no way we see sports in 2020.

1000000000000% agree, and I have been on the same path since this popped off.

I still know people that think this is all fake, and a hoax, etc etc, IT CANCELLED SPORTS!!!! Multiple billion dollar empires shut down 4 minutes after Rudy Gobert tested positive. This is not a joke.

And as people fear "Phase 2", WE HAVEN'T EVEN GOTTEN OUT OF PHASE ONE YET. :lol :lol

We are in bad, bad, bad shape, and sports is taking a huge hit because it absolutely is not essential business in the grand scheme of life. Same as movies, music, etc. That's all entertainment, and right now people are trying to stay alive. (and make money) I love sports to my core, but even I realize this is a ginormous task get out there and just play ball, or fake shoot cops and robbers in movies/TV.

Like I said in the NFL thread. The sooner you realize the season is cancelled the better. NFL and College Football ain't happening. NBA might stand a chance but football has waaaaaay too many players to look after.

And we havent even barely discussed the nuclear yet - what if a player gets it and dies.

Despite the low chance of that, we have seen enough now to know with numbers brings at least a few deaths even in young folk.

This entire thing is just a mess. And it's hard to admit the power this virus has on us. It is. I get it.

And bonus MLB comments from Uni Watch!

The players' union latest counter proposal is significant. It means the owners and the union agree that uniform ads should be a thing going forward. The two sides are still jockeying for position over other issues (the length of the 2020 schedule, the split of postseason revenue, the degree of salary-advance forgiveness, and several other things), but they’ve both checked the uni advertising box.

That, my friends, is seriously bad news.

It seems highly likely that we’ll see (uniform ads) by next year.

Meanwhile: It’s worth taking stock here of just how ruinous MLB commish Rob Manfred has been for baseball uniforms since taking office in 2015. Since that time, he's:

1. Sold the side of the cap to New Era
2. Sold the chest of the jersey to Nike.
3. Sold the back of base coaches’ helmets to Rawlings.
4. Expanded the use of unsightly holiday uniforms from a single day to three-, four-, and even five-day holiday “weekends.”
5. Struck a deal with a new sock supplier that has resulted in players wearing wildly inconsistent (and often embarrassingly cheesy) hosiery styles
6. Overseen the advent of Players Weekend, the most recent edition of which featured such awful uniforms that one of the sport’s marquee franchises asked to be excused from wearing them (and was turned down).
7. Now preparing to oversee the addition of advertising patches for full-time regular season use.

Those are just a few.
