Nothing was hashed out. Dudes are still getting different answers.

It's just funny that dudes swear they are right when no directions or prompt is given.

What the hell does it matter?

Fine, answer me this.

Why do you get two different answers (8.666 or 2) when you use the distributive property?

I'll wait.

Directions? Prompt?
indifferent.gif

Here's the directions.
Find out what 48÷2(9+3) equals

i posted this on FB and got about 45+ comments so far debating, some people got 288, others got 2

I already answers that. You get two different answers because by using the distributive property you can either add the sum of the parenthesis or do away with the parenthesis and then follow the order of operations.

And snakeeyes, it's been determined this question is poorly written and misleading.

Does anyone know where it originated?

They fixed the logic error. Why do you think they made a new model that produces a different answer? Google info about the ti series of calculators because you dont seem to actually own one or understand them

It is up to the order of operations, and a calculator is not necessary to find the answer.

1/3(x+x) = 18
Multiply each side by 3
(x+x) = 54
2x = 54
x = 27
(whoops, hit 1 instead of 2)

The (x+x) is not in the denominator. The denominator is not 3(x+x). If it was the problem would be 1/(3(x+x)).

48/2(9+3) = 288
Multiply each side by 2/48.
(9+3) = 12
9+3 = 12
12 = 12
At first I thought the answer was 2, but then again. I had to check using different numbers and variables.

1/3(x+x) = 18
Following pemdas.
1/3(2x) = 18
2x = 54
x = 27
Plugging this number in makes sense.

this is the answer people will get if you use the 288 way.

But  for the people that got 2.
1/3(x+x) = 18
1/3(2x) = 18
1/6x = 18
x = 108.
Plugging this answer back in doesnt make any sense.
I can see why the answer is 288 now, when I thought it was 2 at first.
No, you don't understand what the people who are arriving at 2 are doing. They would arrive at x= (1/108). plug that in for x and it does work.
