56 MPG mandate by 2025 = SCRAPPED BY current EPA

And companies like BMW are trying to build those super-efficient high HP cars.  I don't have the numbers but I'm pretty sure we did not make significant improvements in MPG the last 20 years.  I'm sure car companies can improve when they are forced to while limiting price increase.  This a big step forward to reducing foreign dependence for oil.

I'm just thinking out loud here but does global warming and mpg have any sort of correlation?
If so, what if the market doesn't believe in global warming or doesn't want to do anything about it?
Then, should the ignorance or negligence of the masses prevail?

why do you think US automakers dont make US cars in da states, only trucks? why do you think da auto makers in da US abandoned detroit? da government has made it so expensive to operate and do business here that they rather do it overseas.
US automakers "don't make cars, only trucks" because US automakers found out the hard way that pushing high cost, low quality, inefficient and ugly vehicles aren't what the car buying public wants. Japan automakers figured that out and from the 80s on the writing was on the wall for the US companies but they refused to look.

The government hardly has anything to do with "expensive to operate" costs, because it's been documented that many popular Honda and Toyota models are built right here in the US, with somewhere around 80% of American components.

not to mention the UAW labor disputes the US companies had.

it's already been happening. look at the new m5.

whatever though. i'll just cop something old or drive a twin charged 3 cylinder beast.

and you believe that? there's a reason OG muscle cars are around is because people like me 30-40 years ago saw what was going on and kept da 70's chargers, road runners, chevelles, skylarks, camaros, mustangs etc. when da 80's brung that wave of TRASH

go to a muscle car show, its all older gentlemen with their kids enjoying da old school when things were made here in America, and da common man could afford a great powerful V8 muscle car, and ain't have to sorry about imports cuz our cars were THAT good.
nah man i wasnt serious
but basically a charger wit da hemi now would be an investment for the future if kept in pristine condition huh ninja?
absolutely. if da tree huggers get their way it'll make it extremely hard for car makers to make powerful cars like that anymore.

then I would be saving in the long run due to not having to buy another car for a long time, and due to not having to buy gas.
i guarantee you that none of those cars your talking about will be able to be manufactured in da US thus killing jobs...da only reason car makers are able to make trucks here is because of da higher profit margin allows them to...

with gas being high or low, you know whats da number 1 selling car in da US? da Ford F series...you can't Force people to buy things they dont want.

if they REALLY wanted high MPG then diesel versions of cars we see on da road via europe would've BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN available in da US.

highlight the chart if numbers don't show up

1. Ford F-Series (528,349 +27.7%)6. Honda Civic (260,218 +0.8%)
2. Chevrolet Silverado  (370,135 +16.9%)7. Nissan Altima (229,263 +12.6%)
3. Toyota Camry (327,804 -7.5%)8. Ford Fusion (219,219 +21.3%)
4. Honda Accord (311,381 +8.1%)9. Honda CR-V (203,714 +7.2%)
5. Toyota Corolla (266,082 -9.8%)10. Dodge Ram (199,652 +13%)
Total of gas guzzlers= 1098313
Total gas fuel efficient cars = 1817681

that's just top 10.more Americans buy fuel efficient cars than gas guzzlers.  fact.

nice try trying to mislead us though.

But times have changed.

You mentioned earlier that technology in cars will respond when the market demands, not when the government deems it so.

What do you think about this?

There are some indications that the trend toward smaller vehicles will reduce the nation's fuel use. In California, motorists bought 4 percent less gasoline in January than they did the year before, a drop of more than 58 million gallons, according to the Oil Price Information Service.

"That is an incredible year-over-year drop," said Tom Kloza, the organization's chief oil analyst. "Some of it clearly has to do with changes in the vehicle fleet."

This was taken from an article in 2008. Sales for smaller vehicles have continued to rise yearly since this was written. People are buying those Yaris and Fits or any other crossover type vehicle they can get their hands on. I love muscle cars as well, but you can't deny there's a demand for smaller vehicles.

you think everyone can afford these expensive new hybrid and electric cars? especially ones that people just dont want? they're gonna be sitting on lots da SECOND opec figures out

da US is trying to pull a fast one and will just lower prices..look what happened to da toyota prius as soon as gas got cheap, it stop selling and started catchin dust.

us americans like big cars, and we love to drive...this country was built on automobile travel.
Expensive hybrid cars? You mean the $23,000 Prius? Yes, that's expensive compared to the cheap "big cars" Americans love to drive. Much more expensive then a 50g corvette, or a 400k Lambo, or a 30k Ford super duty, or a 100k benz.

Fixed.

I live in Texas and I pray sometimes that legislation will limit the type of trucks people can buy for non commercial purposes

@ ur comparison, gee lets match a hyper exotic thats gonna see 3,000 miles a year TOPS like a lamborghini, then stuffed in a garage and match

it with a car that gonna be on da road till its wheels fall off like a toyota prius....

listen bucko...dont forget that da government subsizes those hybrid and electric car purchases and taxing us for it.

rich people are gonna continue to drive what they wanna drive, its us common man thats gonna be forced to either drink that kool-aid from congross on what type of car i should drive with my money or simple tell em "no thanks" and continue to use da cars already on da road.
Because I didn't list a Ford Super duty as a comparison? Wow pretty hyper exotic huh? And, LOL at you for laughing at the lambo comment when on a previous page you commented, look down below.

Trust me I can go and look up a good amount of other US cars that are just as expensive as the Ford I listed and even more expensive. But, whats they point in that? Lets stick to actually replying relevant info to the argument.

Also, to your last comments why do you think the hybrids are like that? Possible because they have better gas mileage and are better for the environment and our society. Is it fair to you then that the rich will drive whatever? If not then I would assume you agree with me in saying that we should then tax those individuals, the richest of rich, so that we can drive better cars too.
