11-year-old girl shot, wounded while waiting to buy new Air Jordan sneakers at Springfield's Walmart plaza

SPRINGFIELDMayor Domenic J. Sarno said city police are actively hunting for a man who shot an 11-year-old girl in the leg as she waited for a store selling new Nike Air Jordan sneakers to open Saturday morning.

"Shame on them! Shame on them! Over a ... pair of sneakers!" an angry Sarno said Saturday evening.

The mayor said an "orderly line" had formed outside a local shoe store – Expressions at the Walmart plaza on Boston Road – before the shop had opened for business Saturday morning. But a pair of individuals with possible gang ties "tried to cut the line," sparking a violent episode in which the girl, an innocent bystander, was shot and wounded, he said.

"They tried to jump the line," said Sarno, who received a police briefing on the incident. "It just boggles my mind, the uncivilized nature of these unsavory individuals who could have taken the life of an 11-year-old girl." The mayor said he'll be reaching out to the girl and her family, who right now need their privacy and time to deal with the "traumatic situation."

City and state police are searching for one or more suspects, one of whom left behind a camouflage jacket. An extensive ground-and-air search effort, including K-9 units and a state police helicopter, turned up nothing Saturday, but investigators continue to probe the shooting – the second involving a local child injured by gunfire in as many weeks.

"It looks like she's going to be OK," Springfield Police Detective Joe Brodeur said of the girl, whose name was not publicly released. She was shot in the leg and rushed to Baystate Medical Center for treatment.

The incident was reported just after 8:36 a.m. Saturday, Lt. James Rosso said, adding that no arrests had been made as of early Saturday evening.

According to Brodeur, police are looking for "one or more" males who were involved in the altercation, which ended with gunfire.

On March 6, a 5-year-old boy was shot in the leg in Holyoke after a man opened fire on the boy's father. An arrest has been made in that case.

Authorities said the 11-year-old girl was standing in a line of people waiting to buy new Air Jordan sneakers at Expressions, 1067 Boston Road, a shoe store located at the Walmart plaza. She was outside MadRag, a clothing shop two stores away from Expressions, when two males in their late teens or early twenties got into verbal dispute that quickly turned physical.

One male pulled out a handgun and reportedly pistol-whipped the other before opening fire on him. It's unknown if the man who was shot at was struck, but the girl was hit in the leg, police said. "We believe she was an innocent victim," detective Sgt. Kenneth J. Murray said.

Witnesses described the shooter as a black male wearing a camouflage jacket. Murray said police found the jacket nearby and used it to attempt to track the suspect with K-9 units. State police conducted an aerial search with a helicopter, but authorities were unable to locate the gunman. "We were unsuccessful ... he had either been picked up by a car or previously passed through that area," Murray said.

Saturday marked the national release of the Air Jordan 13 Retro "He Got Game" model, which retails for about $170, as well as the Air Jordan 13 GS, a grey-and-pink sneaker for girls that sells for around $115. Air Jordan debuts typically attract crowds of sneaker enthusiasts, some of whom arrive early to get in line before stores open. Some people waited outside the Springfield shoe store all night, according to Murray.

A manager at MadRag, who declined to give her name, said police contacted her around 7:30 a.m. to let her know that one of the store's large front windows had been shattered by gunfire. By Saturday afternoon, two large pieces of plywood covered the hole where the window had been, but the store was open for business, according to the manager.

Two women working behind the counter at Expressions declined to give their names to a reporter. "They're trying to make it sound like it was related to the release (of the new Air Jordans), but it had nothing to do with that," said one of the employees, who was counting a large wad of cash. Two men had a previous beef, she said, and that disagreement coincided with the release of the new Jordans.

Disturbances have plagued past sneaker debuts by the Nike brand named after Michael Jordan, one of the NBA's all-time greatest players. In December, police used pepper spray on a mob outside a mall in Huntsville, Ala. Fights had broken out as about 100 people waited for a previous version of the iconic shoes. In 2011, police across the country struggled to maintain crowd control and quell fights outside national retail outlets as hordes of people lined up for Nike's retro Air Jordans.

Gunfire is rare in the city's Boston Road neighborhood, Springfield's main retail corridor. Sarno said the incident will not be tolerated. "The police are hunting these individuals," he said, referring to them as "disrespectful animals" who don't respect themselves or "human life" in general.

"Thank God this young lady is OK," he said of the injured girl.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Springfield Police Detective Bureau at (413) 787-6355. Anonymous text-message tips can be sent to CRIMES (or 274637), with the body of the message beginning with the word "SOLVE."
These types of idiots ruin it for everybody, truly selfish and can't see past themselves. It's utterly disgusting and a total disregard for the value of human life. Wouldn't be surprised if they remove retro Jordan's from that location for the time being.

Shout out to my dude Dilly1031,for helping a brother out while he works!!!!

Just did that reference trick & it worked my shipping label was created, I will deff be using this trick from now on...especially on FNL orders :smokin

wow these stores is gonna have to hire armed security guards for rubber and leather its safer to buy jewelery or go the bank than buy some shoes right now, store has to control the line if its fcfs straight up.......

oh and the resellers should be ashamed of themselves they even buying gs pairs out ,whats next robbing preschoolers since resellers hyping up the prices on gs pairs is anybody safe ?

Feel bad for that girl that got shot. I personally wouldn't bring my family to line up for shoes like that. Apparently this has going on for years and Nike hasn't responded to it.

Let's get Nike to produce more shoes and hopefully lower shoe prices. Everyone deserves Jordans!

This was my first RSVP pick up at Nike Santa Monica and in general since I always purchase online. I go and see a bunch of people standing around or sitting on the chairs upstairs by the RSVP area. I thought it was like a little wait area to pick up the shoes so I wait a bit. I see a customer walk up and ask the worker what is this all for and was told it was for the Jordan 13's. I go up and ask is this for the RSVP and the worker said yes and asked for my ID, size and my twitter handle. Another worker went to the back to pick up my shoes and escorted me like a security guard downstairs to pay at the register.

I guess they were either waiting til 5pm to pick up unclaimed RSVP's or were just waiting for their friends to try on clothes or something by the fitting rooms. I could sense all the people in the waiting area giving me dirty looks thinking I was one of them as I was being escorted downstairs with my Jordan shoe box lol.

I check Nike Santa Monica's twitter feed later and it says stay tuned for the unclaimed pairs. I'm wondering if those people waiting around got to buy any unclaimed pairs or they just waited for nothing lol.

Cool story bro.
they were waiting for unclaimed pairs.. i went to pick mine up at NIKEdc(thnx to chronos) and there was a line right around the corner for unclaimed pairs...i mean that line was crazy
Yea, most likely. It wasn't even an organized line, it was just a crowd of people lounging around and some were there with their girlfriends just chilling. I guess when they saw that NikeLA tweet about the unclaimed pairs being sold at a first come first serve basis, they took their chances. In the end, they tweeted to stay tune about the unclaimed pairs (which they rsvp'ed again the next day). I just don't understand why the employees didn't tell them beforehand that they weren't going to sell the unclaimed pairs that day to clear the zoo lol.

Seems like some folks didn't pick up their pairs at ntla if the time for pick ups ended at 1pm. Look at the time on the tweet:
Yes, the window for NikeLA was 10am to 1pm and Nike Santa Monica was 12pm to 5pm.

This **** getting old...I'm done after a few pairs this year.

Right. It makes 100% sense to ask Nike to raise prices in order to curb resellers. Genious move.
I think increasing production numbers will work better. Raising prices just raises the ante even more. Pretty soon you will see more shoe jackin on the streets.

Damn that little girl got shot close to where I live. I know some people like the whole FCFS, but I think raffles are the best way to curb violence. Seems like a lot of these incidents come from people arguing over spots in line.

what the **** man. there's so many damn idiots out there. who the **** shoots a little girl and over some "he got games"  at that....

Jordan13 restock is on March 20th, so don't overpay on resales.

Just wait, you will be thanking me!

stone-cold-laughing.gif

I don't care to be honest.I just don't like people posting random info without a source.

I'm not really sure what Fast 23 is referring to, but I do know that there will be a few FTL stores that will receive more pairs this week. This is not a restock. They are just moving pairs that haven't sold to stores with higher traffic. If you're still looking, I'd check your local FTL, HOH, Champs, or FA stores this week. Probably around Tues/Wed. But don't expect every store to get more pairs in. This will only happen at a FEW stores.

That green holo on the bottom is sick

Everything seems to be onpoint.
Jb....please continue your retros like this one!
Make them as authentic as possible. Thank u.

Repped and quoted for truth!! I have zero complaints regarding the quality. The upside down Jordan tag is the only questionable error I have seen.

^ Its supposed to be that way so when viewed while wearing them it says "XIII".

At least that's my assumption.

Since we are on a roll with this restock\reselling business here is my opinion about what Nike should do to discourage resellers:
  1. Just raise the price of the pairs considerably higher, yeah it would suck to pay a lot more, but it's worth being able to wake up in the morning and be GURANTEED your pair when walking into a shop anytime that day.
  2. Make a lot more or yes restock considerably more.  I do feel a little frustrated about the Bred XIs restocking so soon b\c it makes the pair so generic, but if they keep this strategy up across the board for every shoe and it kills the resell game, I'm down w\it.

I think Nike would be making a mistake to keep letting resellers bank on their present day releases, it's one thing for collectors to profit on collectables, but no company should have a market where regular Joes pick up your retail item and inflate the price 35%+, that is valuable profit you are missing out on through poor selling strategy, additionally that is a far reach from proper marketing strategy.  If an item is Exclusive and in High Demand, you either pump the quantity or pump the price, you don't leave the market the way it is.

On a positive note I do see them making slight corrections, such as small price increases on the retros and frequent restocks, let's just hope the corrections keep getting applied until we can see a day we can just wake up one morning and go to our local pick up spot w\no lines or hassles.
If u would like to see a higher price tag to guarantee urself a pair then why not just buy from a reseller? Lol make no sense

think things are crazy now let nike up the prices and see how it gets ,i agree that comment makes no sense, prices are already high come on

Just got backorder email from FTL.... For the aj13 pink grey..... Wife is not happy :/

Anyone have experience with backorders with FTL/EB?

Shout out to my boy for waking up and copping me a pair since I was on a mini vacation with the girl friend and away from the internet! True friend right there haha.

Had these in middle school and my parents sent them to the philippines when I out grew them. Finally got them back!

Hope everyone can get their pairs (these should restock).

Just have a quick question regarding FinishLine's ordering procedures. I had a friend order my size because I couldn't get through on any site, but he also ordered his own size in a different order earlier. One of the orders is listed as "Shipped" while the other is listed as "Processing." However, I'm seeing that both orders have a shipping label.

Do you think they will cancel the order? Thanks.
