The thing is though, on the boots and higher quality shoes the leather makes it wayyy heavier, which in turn creates durability, but I don't think the weight of premium thick leather would do any good on the basketball court, too bulky.

Sorry, but the comparison between cowboy boots and basketball sneakers is not a good one. And if an athlete wore horse leather on kicks I could only imagine how many pounds he'd lose just by sweating out of his feet!
No doubt synthetic is cheaper, and I'm sure that's the #1 reason Nike uses it. But it's also lighter and more breathable, and often doesn't stretch as much. It's also more ethical and better for the environment. So there are benefits that go beyond dollars and cents.
