Apparently they're just gonna cast all the male leads from that "Daleks in Manhattan" two-parter as superheroes in reboots:

Sony's long search for Peter Parker has finally ended.
The studio has settled on relative unknown Andrew Garfield to star as the young webslinger in "Spider-Man."

The 26 year-old British thesp appeared in last year's "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassius" and can be seen this fall in Sony's Facebook pic, "The Social Network," as well as Mark Romanek's adaptation of "Never Let Me Go."

So it wasn't actually Josh Hutcherson, but now we know who it really is, no more rumors. Sony has officially announced (via press release and Twitter) that 26-year-old actor Andrew Garfield has been fully cast as the new Peter Parker in Sony's Spider-Man reboot. Production begins in early December directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt (The Losers). "Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor's work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love [him as Peter]," says Webb.

"Spider-Man is a classic superhero — a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man. An actor who will depict the vulnerability of youth and the strength and confidence of a legendary figure at the same moment. We have found that actor in Andrew Garfield. From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film The Social Network, to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker," says Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures.


Most may not know Andrew Garfield yet, but you will soon. He appeared in Boy A and Lions for Lambs and starred in the Red Riding trilogy as well as Terry Gilliam's Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. He was also cast in David Fincher's The Social Network as Eduardo Saverin and co-stars in Never Let Me Go. I've seen him in a couple of films and I can certainly say he's very talented, but I haven't seen him playing a character like Peter Parker yet. "In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth, and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen," says producer Laura Ziskin. They really like him!
Sony has scheduled Marc Webb's Spider-Man for release, in 3D, on July 3rd, 2012. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios. Stay tuned for more updates on casting and the movie in general, as this is only the beginning of a very long journey!

The only thing that butchered all 3 Spidey movies to me was that they pushed Mary Jane way too much into the storylines.

Too much lovey dovey crap...

You say that like Spider-Man isn't known for its maudlin romance drama. Hell Stan and Steve were a just a foot out of writing "Teen Love Stories" when they created him.
