Asian Culture Discussion Thread

Just asking because he damn sure never claimed his black side.
I dont think he properly claimed his Thai side either. I was a huge fan, still am of his. Besides Jordan, Tiger was someone I admired as a kid. Did all sorts of drawings and schoolwork on him in elementary school.

Even though he dont really acknowledge the culture I dont really care. I regard him like hes my distant cousin who lived in the suburbs who married a white girl and barely know how to use chopsticks or speak the language. He gets a pass.

When I was in Seattle in 2013 I went to visit Bruce's grave site

Man I dunno if this is the biggest troll job . but some of the girls looking good. :nerd::nerd:

#TEAMABG??

One thing that annoys the F outta me is when Asian groups like this ONLY kick it with Asians. We live in such a beautiful and diverse land and its a shame that some Asians refused to explore other cultures outside of their circle.

I'm as proud as the next Asian of my culture and heritage, but I had to really separate myself from these type of cliques.

I dont think ANYONE should aspire to be like the people in the video. It's more of a huge troll job than anything.

ive never liked the token asian among white bros......but the token asian among black dudes is OK

does that make me prejudice

i dont think it makes you prejudiced. sometimes you can relate to certain folks more or it feels easier or more natural to be in community with someone.

in terms of tokenism, i feel like there's a different power dynamic at play when an asian person tries to "fit-in" with a group of white folks vs fitting in with a group of Black folks. traditionally, it seems like when asian people try to assimilate into whiteness it requires some rejection of their ethnic identity, whereas connecting with Black or other communities of color doesn't necessitate hiding. tbh, my perspective is very biased. i learned really early on that when white kids on the playground harassed me for being a dark skinned "ching chong" it felt a lot different from when Black kids did the very same thing.

one thing that annoyed me is when people criticize Asian (actually, ANY non-western) countries for wanting to keep their country closed/homogenous.

then they call them "racist" for wanting to preserve THEIR country with THEIR people.

yea, because the last time any non-western country opened up it was Disneyland for these folks

these days everyone wants every country to be like the US, a big melting pot.

and dont get me wrong, thats what makes the US special (and also toxic). but just think about how much of Native American culture has been forgotten.

now imagine if every country became like the US... then it wouldnt be so special anymore.

The reason why Japan is beautiful is because JAPANESE people created JAPANESE culture and Japan is filled with what they brought to the world.

and that was just an example. This can be said about any nation.

Am I wrong for thinking this way?

I don't think you need to force diversity in every country and it's weird when they try to put that onto other countries.

The reason it's important here is because everyone has a stake and claim here. Forcing anything now is exclusionary whereas Japan, etc it's just how it's always been.

No problem with being proud of your country and culture but there’s a point where that can turn into nationalism and then racism/discrimination. Does Japan need to force more diversity into their country? Not necessarily but they should also embrace the diversity that do have and treat those people better.
