Asian Culture Discussion Thread

So now the question becomes how much do people want music censorship?

Or is this just a selective thing? Where people are only offended when they feel like it

For example Eminem is 100 times more famous than YG will ever be so does this lyric have to come down as well or is nobody upset about this lyric from Eminem’s “Bad Meets Evil”:

Why does YG get taken down and not Eminem? Eminem has said wildly offensive things about literally every group of people but after 2002 or so, nobody has really said much about it.

I DON'T GIVE A ****. THROW ALL THAT ******* TRASH AWAY. **** EMINEM AND **** YG.

**** YG FOR TRYING TO NORMALIZE BURGLARIZING CHINESE PEOPLE.

WE ARE ******* TIRED OF BEING ASSAULTED, ROBBED, BURGLARIZED, MURDERED. IF YOU DON'T GET THAT SHUT THE **** UP. I DON'T GIVE A **** WHO SAID IT. WHITE, BLACK, ASIAN, LATINX, WHOEVER, SHUT ALL THE WAY THE **** UP AND STOP QUESTIONING PEOPLE'S ANGER.

i really hope folks aint just on their keyboards arguing with each other but are actually showing up to protests and rallies. asians with attitude organized this one yesterday in oakland and it was ******* dope.

a handful of the brothers who organized it are formerly incarcerated southeast asians and they’ve made it a point to build up and protect communities. shoutout to them.

if anyone is having trouble understanding the collective anger and frustration of the asian community that’s been building up for the past 150 years then i suggest you slide thru a rally and listen to speakers.

Some of these cats don’t cAre about Asians. They’re lames who bs in this thread then will claim “I said stop Asian hate”. But in the background and privately they will expose themselves.

So, how do you feel about the executive order by Biden? The one protecting Asians from hate crimes?

Small scale, appears to be an addition to the order he gave bout a month or so ago. Tied into the whole xenophobia against Asians.

larger scale. Not good enough. You can’t make ticky tack moves like this. What about Black, Latino, LGBTQ.

he needs to create an execute order addressing white supremacy.

imo You go straight for the head of the snake.

It goes to show how little seriousness is placed on anti Asian rhetoric. If any other race were made targets, there wouldn’t be debates about “free speech” and that artist would face career consequences. Asians speaking up=complete dismissal of legitimate concerns. Now Asians are actually being blamed and accused of being anti-black as a whole because of voicing their views. Look at the hip hop thread on this very website as an example

also Kinfolk Kinfolk Asian Americans have been complaining for years about rappers who talk about their “eyes low like I’m Asian,Chinese, etc.” and other stereotypes. just because you a)personally haven’t heard about it (because Asian complaints and concerns go nowhere in this country) and b)most Asians just accept anti Asian rhetoric as part of American society and focus on getting by (which is why many of our parents always remind us that we will never be considered Americans) doesn’t mean people aren’t offended. Asians do not enjoy how they’re portrayed in Western media, but guess what, if they say anything, they’re told to “stop being sensitive, other races have it worse, you guys already have positive portrayals, Bollywood is the largest film industry so who cares, Kpop and Korean drama is popular” and all sorts of other deflections that are completely irrelevant to Asian life outside of Asia.

What you’re seeing now is more and more younger Asians speaking up while the previous generations just sucked it up and focused on their jobs to put food on the table and save up for their kids’ education. Younger people born in this country aren’t as afraid to cause disruptions to their own careers/lives and put themselves at risk compared to our parents and grandparents.

Yeah this response was more along the lines of what I’d expect the attitude to be towards Eminem or anyone for that matter, not just YG.

But Wuchi wanted to let it pass since it’s “not as bad/offensive” as what YG said which makes very little sense.

For clarification I made no statement about how anyone should feel about it. What I said is that racism is racism and none of it should be tolerated or given a pass. When people get stupid and start wanting to rate levels of racism you’re aiding racism.

Scroll up if you think I said anything to the contrary. sfc415 sfc415

You misread what I said.

I said I’ve seen people here mention it and people in real life.

How did you gather that I said I hadn’t heard it?

I’m telling you the reality of what people think whether you and I like it or not. There are different levels of offense that Asians feel.

People making comments of how Asians look or speak=“Sucks, but I can’t do anything about it and need to focus on providing for my family”. To the older generation who came here solely to make money and provide for their future generation at all costs, speaking out against that type of stuff is a lost cause because they believe nothing will change. Younger people who are born in the US and who consider this to be their home are more willing to speak out against it.

because you haven’t if you’re making a blanket statement about people in here not being outraged over racist comments towards Asians. People have complained in the past but did that stop American culture from portraying them as sources of comedy? No, so they gave up and focused on their life goals instead.

You didn’t read what I said and went off on a tangent.

with YG’s song Getting banned, now would seem to be a good time to address other songs.

you’re talking like the past isn’t different from TODAY.

Eyeballs are on the issue. The iron is hot. Now would be the time to address it.

Kinfolk Kinfolk apologies, I mixed up this with what you recently posted. Just letting you know why people don’t/didn’t make a big deal about Eminem/other rappers making comments about Asians’ eyes/appearance despite being offended. I mean, it’s not even limited to hip hop right? TV shows and movies make a mockery of Asian appearances with no consequences as well. The older generation just accepted as a reality of living in America.

the YG song is different because now people’s safety is being put at risk. When they’re being targeted physically, they can’t just suck it up and focus on their livelihoods like they used to.

It’s probably best that you read what people say before trying to chastise them.

It’s still probably best to not tell people how offended to be as well. Is it really your place to say how offended Asians should feel? Your opinions are more important than theirs when it comes to issues relating directly to them? How is it going off on a tangent when you’re the one making a big deal about “levels of offensiveness”? don’t dismiss legitimate answers as “tangents” just because you’re not satisfied with what you’re hearing.

Yeah I still don't know how you've gathered that that took place.

Did I tell my fellow Asians how they should feel? If so please quote where I said how they should feel.

At no point did I say "since everyone is mad about YG they should be mad about eminem".

I posed a question and pointed out that Wuchi wanted to rate levels of racism. That's not telling anyone how to feel.

I was telling him that you can't get into the nonsense of saying "This is more racist than that" and explained why.

That's two different things and hopefully for your sake, you can see the difference.

Seriously? Just one page ago you asked why people aren’t making a huge deal about Eminem. You received an answer (which is accurate regarding the Asian community whether you like it or not) and then you said “it’s not going to fly” as if you’re the gatekeeper for how Asians feel.

Anyway, speaking of the YG SONG, hope all the Asian people in this thread remind their parents to keep valuables in the bank and to invest in home security systems. My parents live in a majority Vietnamese and Indian neighborhood, and these homes get targeted for break ins the most due to the common knowledge of these cultures of keeping gold jewelry and artifacts. Some robbers apprehended in the neighborhood admitted monitoring households or looking for houses where shoes were kept outside.

my mom keeps the vast majority of her family heirloom jewelry in the bank for this very reason, and she only takes them out when she wants to wear them for a formal event. My dad used to have a bunch of his work computers out in the open at home, but now they’re stored in hidden compartments throughout the house when they’re not in use. They’ve also installed multiple cameras outside due to attempted break ins to our home and the cars we parked in the driveway. It’s sad that this is what it’s come to, but better to be extra careful these days.

When you paraphrase me, you're able to make it seem like I said something other than what I said.

I did not say "Why aren't people making a huge deal about eminem". You're trying your best to make my statements into some big "Whatabout" statement and that's exactly what its not.

Its there, and you can take it that way if you want to but I'm saying that you're being inaccurate and taking liberties with my words. Don't do that.

You've now edited your post (I have no problem with that at all) but you're talking about other things now.

But again, I'm not telling anyone what to be upset about. Folks gotta understand that when you censor music its not a one and done type of situation.

With the removal of the YG content, the door has been opened to music censorship meaning other lyrics about Asians and others are now fair game. That kind of censorship probably can't be selective in the way that Wuchi suggested.

I accidentally overwrote my post while trying to add to the thread and readded what I previously wrote.

I am NOT disagreeing with your overall sentiment. I do NOT agree with letting derogatory comments fly. I am telling you WHY Asians feel the way they do, so to dismiss it as “it’s not going to fly” is offensive when you don’t know the reason for why they don’t make a big deal about certain things.

do you need an example? My girlfriend hates hearing racist comments regarding Asians at work (people have asked her about Asians getting with Americans for green cards), but her main concern is keeping her job/visa and not getting deported back to Indonesia. Despite my feelings on this matter, her mentality is “I can’t afford to cause a stir” because she’s afraid to go back to a country where she’s a minority who gets treated even worse (she’s of Japanese descent but can pass for Chinese, who are discriminated against heavily and have gone through brutal periods of murder and rape in Indonesia). As long as she keeps her job until we get married , she feels like she can’t afford to make a big deal about every racist comment made about Asians.

telling people like her “oh you’re wrong for thinking that way” when you haven’t been in their shoes is not fair. You don’t think I wish she’d make a big deal about these offensive comments? Of course I do, but when she says things like “I’d rather die than go back permanently to Indonesia” I have to let her feel the way that she feels. Her main priority is to be safe and to establish permanent residency here.

And I’m telling you, MANY Asians feel the way she does in terms of putting up with the BS that comes with living in the US. Her gay brother lives in garbage *** Iowa, and even with the racist comments he faces there, he’d rather live there than go back to a country where it’s illegal to be homosexual and gay people get caned in public.

do you need an example?

Me saying "it's not going to fly" is not dismissive and its unfortunate that you took it that way.

"It's not going to fly" was said to convey that its not going to be just YG's song getting deleted, case closed. It's not going to be just one set of lyrics that get censored, case closed. A can of worms is now open and there will be fallout from that.

And no, I don't need that example because you're talking about something that I was never discussing in the first place. You're insisting that I don't understand that some people feel the need to keep their heads down to avoid blowback to their livelihoods. I get that but that's getting away from the censorship issue which is all that I was talking about.

If what you're saying was correct in THIS SPECIFIC INSTANCE then the youtube EMPLOYEES who took issue with the YG song that sparked all of this woudn't have made a fuss about anything in the first place for fear of what you've been talking about.

ok then you are missing the point I’m trying to make as well. People will keep their heads down for racist comments but will speak up when their safety and livelihood is put at risk. That’s why THIS SPECIFIC INSTANCE is different and more serious than someone mocking Asian features or accents. You can walk away and continue living life as usual from someone who doesn’t like your eyes, but you could be killed or lose everything you worked for in a home invasion. If you don’t want to accept that, too bad, I’ll stop trying to explain it to you and will continue discussing with people who can relate.
