Think I might go catch my own air balls today and start some trouble lol

fact is, this is just going result in an immediate argument if you try to argue catching your own airball...there isn't any set of rules for pickup, it is an amalgamation/hodge-podge of informal understandings & the main thing everyone understands is: if anything looks awkward/funny/off timing/weird/unfamiliar---someone will probably call it... will be a call, an ensuing argument, & ball goes up top to either restart the possession or maybe someone says shoot for it...

Once these social media guys catch on to this rule and flood us with legal or not vids, it's over. Dudes gonna be making multiple passes, disguised as shots, to themselves across the court and ****

It was obviously a travel he picked up his pivot and made two steps with it

I am shocked they made that call at that moment though.
Yeah, that’s what i thought too. You know he’s been doing brag for years and to now call it? Reminded me of the Tim Donaghy documentary where they started calling Iverson for carries on his crossover to see how they could influence the game.

Ehh. He’s not wrong. I think we know by now that shooting is not an exact science. Show me the best shooters in the world, I’ll show you how each one does it differently. But they can still teach the “textbook” form to the kids. All the greats will shoot differently. I’d say balance is one of the constants, and reps on reps on reps.

Kobe’s pump fake teaching also is right in theory, but he can still get away with it, doesn’t make what he said a lie. Elite players can get away with doing things “wrong” but you still don’t want to teach that to little Jimmy at the rec center. U see it all the time that players with ELITE hezi’s and pump fakes get defenders to bite on the fake with a negative step that is unnatural to their jumpshot. Still works- for them. Still should teach the right way.

i think the interesting thing about both examples is the explanations being so definitive about there being a ‘right’ way…i think everyone can be guilty of a sort of a priori/deductive/on the spot type of reasoning for how/why something works without necessarily knowing how/why it actually works. obviously there are exceptions to every rule, and as such does not disprove the rule, but also people just repeat the rule without examination

Side note

I understand inflation is everywhere

But damn I can’t believe the universal bball of pickup games is $79.99 these days. Not sure when it hit that level. Seemed like a few years ago they were like $56 and you could find a 20% off deal at Dicks/Eastbay.

Talking about the Evolution of course lol

Check out the Wilson NBA ball. I’ve always wanted a “real” nba ball but wasn’t paying $99-$129 for the Spalding. Wilson now is $200.

I’ve seen authentic nba balls on eBay for good deals but haven’t looked in a while. But if nobody wants to play with it, not sure if it’s worthwhile.

I got the Evo NXT last year for $5 (Academy Sports had put a baseball price sticker on it for $4.88). Took people a little while to get over the color but now that’s all we use (two other guys went and bought one but paid full price).

I agree - and it’s mine. I have the NXT, a Rock, and a Dime ball and the NXT is my least favorite but the guys like it. To me the seams are way to thin and it just feels off when shooting. The Rock is a waaaaay better ball for me.

A few yrs ago… I had been thru so many Evolutions.. didn’t have a problem with em but just was getting slightly bored and wanted to try a different ball. Felt like my Evo at the time was reaching that point to replace. So I tried The Rock. I played with it for about 2 years. It’s a really good ball, and honestly pretty similar to broken in Evos. Prob 2 months ago I decided it reach that point to move on. Put it in my garage for driveway hoops. And I’ve been bringing the old Evo from a few yrs ago that I was retiring to the gym. It still is going strong and has been the main runs ball when I go. I’m like damn, this thing isn’t dying. I’ll get another Evo next time

it's really tough to beat an evo but a big benefit in not having one is that when you run 5s, your ball is least likely to be used as the game ball, meaning less wear and tear

But also more likely to come up missing

The new Wilson ball has a better feeling leather than the Spalding ball, but the channels are terrible. They've ripped and tear up easily.

I'm on my 3rd ball in 1 year now, so $600+ for only 3 balls

Yea this isn't as much of a "gotcha" as he thinks it is.

I agree with everything 206to813 206to813 said.

i don’t think it’s necessarily meant to be a ‘gotcha’ thing…

sheeeeeeesh…i’m pretty agnostic when comes to basketball ‘feel’ altho fasho some are better than others but as long as that joint ain’t got those bulges/bumps in it and it’s adequately inflated 😂

The channels are terrible though. Trust. The rubber deteriorates on an indoor court and peels off like it was used outdoors. The leather feels amazing on it though, and if you have big hands like me and can palm it you'll never go back to the evolutions.
